Okay so I was thinking today . . . about Eve Online and how it is SO different from any other game I've played. In most games, even in most MMORPGs, there is an ultimate "goal" to be achieved. For example, in Dark Age of Camelot (the game I played for a couple years before coming to Eve), there were dungeons at every stage of the game, and each dungeon generally had a Boss that you had to kill. Eventually, you got to the Badder dungeons where even at the highest levels, you needed a group to kill the Boss. And the epic quests and events - slaying the dragons for example - you needed multiple groups, even hundreds, of people to accomplish the task.
In that game, there was always a dragon to slay, a purpose to strive for. In Eve, there isn't. But is that really such a bad thing?
I was thinking about that the other day - why the game goes on, and why people play. And that's when I realized that Eve is special in that way. You don't NEED any dragons in Eve - the game is designed in a such a way that the content is driven entirely by the players. Players organizing themselves and striving to achieve whatever goals they set for themselves, fill whatever role they choose, is what this game is all about. It reminds me of an old old game I used to play (single player) called Dark Lands.
So when you wonder and ask, "What is the point here? How do I slay the Dragon in Eve Online?" just remember that the dragon is whatever your imagination makes it out to be! Be you a mercenary, pirate, industrialist, or merchant, you won't ever see a "point" to playing Eve Online unless you create it yourself!
And that IS the point of Eve Online, and what makes it so awesome!

Edited by: hellwarrior on 13/08/2004 06:07:23 The purpose is to get a battleship to increase your mining yield, then get another, then run around crazy with battleships in .5+ space.
Then there are people who play for PVP all the time, some of the time, rarely, but even the people who run agent missions and mine, and THINK of pvp know thats why they r in eve... or something. I dno why else you would try and make isk, get a bs to make more isk :o then maybe u can get an isk bpo to sell isk and make isk... errr.
*edit* --> I like eve 2

Sounds great except for the "You don't NEED any dragons in Eve - the game is designed in a such a way that the content is driven entirely by the players" part.
This game needs some new content that only the devs can provide. If organisms stay static and their surrounding enviroment changes, they die... Eve needs to keep changing to retain ppls interest.
/emote uses his imagination to pretend that tech 1.4 hasn't been a joke.

Wouldn't the content be the enviroment and the organisms be the players?
If so, then arn't you saying that no new content needs to be added, just the players need to change to keep everything interesting? (In line with Cao Cao to some extent)

Fantastic post, Cao.
I cannot imagine another game that gives me the freedom that I currently enjoy in EVE. In many cases, the only thing stopping you from doing something is just whether or not you have the will to do something.
I am pleased that after over a year, the CCP Devs are finally taking steps to acknowledge the player alliances and including them more in the "official" storyline. I enjoy read the new events, but I'm sorry, nothing CCP has come up with yet can even hold a candle to things like the original formation of the CA and, civil war within and the assault from without. The constant bloodshed in the North surrounding Venal... how can this not be noticed by the Empires?
But those are all cosmetic things really. In terms of gameplay, EVE has kept me entertained for the better part of eighteen months now and it's hard for me to imagine it not being on my hard drive for a long time to come. -

EVE is alot like real life..
-Everyone would sell their mother for isk. -99% of the EVE population are working their asses off to get stuff they can't actually afford (and which is useless once you have it) -Polititians are generally hated -Commercial adds are everywhere
And last but not least...
What is the meaning of life.... in EVE? =P
Originally by: cashman It's time for Eris to get a clue. CCP should make a statement about this.
It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

Nice and positive post Cao Cao.
I agree with you. What makes this environment unique and fantastic is the ability for people to create their own agendas. * -"You know, we play the "good guys" right? Really, I tend to breathe fire if fed on tequila !
Good post Cao, 100% agreed here. And actually, after about 14 months if i recall right, I have just decided to get a second account.
