Awesome download system, CCP. 
Logged in after lunch, started first 1,?gb d/l. Kicked off at 1800kb/s and quickly went up to 5,3k-5,4k. ~5mins and both the first and the second patch was down.
If the patching keeps up like this you've done a huge improvement from before, +rep.

Most people seem to disagree with you 
I however agree, the new patching system is an improvement over the old.
It's alot more likely those who have issues will post and ask for help/frustrated, than those who have it working. I just thought I'd give some positive feedback as well to balance it up a bit.

I thought CCP stated that classic clients would auto-patch/setup as premium lite, but I also know they recommended classic clients to download premium pre-patch so they 'would need to patch less'.
You could be right tho, might be that the classics are getting errors atm. But that'd be quite crap on CCP's part, the classics should at least be upgrading to premium in a pre-patching state by the auto-patcher, you'd think.

will installing over the top protect the BM's
BM's and notepad messages are carried over (stored on ccp's server). I play on 3 pc's at home and they all share the same notes and bm's.
Overview (account) settings and client settings is a different thing. You can copy files (different for account and client) and just save all those settings too. I forgot what they're named and where you find them tho.

No, it was stated that you MUST upgrade to premium to patch it successfully.
Nice, at least it's verified then.
Have had mine at 84244 for hours so no issues here, just trying to help those with issues. Alot of crap cluttering around here.

I just changed my attributes (BYE BYE 31 WILLPOWER) and my skill training time was not updated. I have paused the training and started it again. Still same.
Other skills that I didn't train have now updated skill training times.
My old attributes were cha 14, int 23, perc 23, mem 24 and willpower 31. I've set them now at 17 (had to add 2 points, damn my base 3 was "too low" to allow a change :/ the 3rd p from learning%), 27, 28, 24, 23.
I was training a skill in spaceship command (perc/will), my navigation skill next in plan dropped from 38 days to 31. The primary on my current skill has increased while the 2ndary hasn't.
The skill was active when I swapped attributes, I meant to turn it off but forgot. I tried relog/swap skills but it doesn't help. Any clue?
Edit; Petitioned it, as it's not related to the patching. Leaving this post up tho so someone else doesn't do the same mistake.
