Thats much less than a billion.
BFD. How much bandwidth could it POSSIBLY take the server to define what type of ships are docked and how many? We don't need to know what rigs you have to display them on the client...rigs aren't displayed graphically anyway. We don't even need to know most of the modules.
How many total ship models are in the game? 100? 500? So assign every ship model a number between 1 and 500, and transmit each number to the client. That'd take a few k at most.
All the processing (such as it is) could be done on the client side. All that needs to be transmitted from the server are the basics, and that is a trivial amount of data.
Some WIS is better than nothing I suppose. And they could always enhance it later. But no windows would be a let down for me.
It's not a problem of _knowing_ what ships are docked... how would you like them displayed? All in one big hangar? How long will it take you to walk to your ships in jita 4-4? OK, give each player a private hangar they can immediatley jump to... wait what was the point in showing ships again?

This here is certainly the future.
I'm holding my breath until we can land on planets / moons and walk around there. A polluted industrial planet; peaceful settlement on a lush green world; moon bases on.. moons! ------------------- |

We already know that CCP deemed that looking at your (or any) ship while in station is not required. Apparently anything that hints that you are 'in space' is also not required.
I don't know where you got that from. It was deemed not feasible to have windows looking into space because of technical constraints with the EVE server design. I do agree though, windows would be awesome
I'd imagine that it would be possible to have windows looking into space WITHIN the server constraints, BUT what you would be seeing would be a generated "pretend" space. IE: an animation with random ships flying about, NOT a live image of what's actually out there.
This is what I was talking about, except for the ships (those are too small most of the time anyway). The nearby moon and planet, and the local star, as well as parts of the station exterior could be part of the visible scenery. All pre-rendered for that particular station.
And regarding ships, why not some windows overlooking the ship hangar space from a distance. This way the ships don't need new models or textures. Doesn't seem too difficult. ...

How about "sightseeing consoles" that you stand in front of and activate, bringing you to a view (or series of views) of the station's exterior in the same way that the star map brings you to a different screen?
I bet that would be easier to do than to have windows, and it would make for some nice views of loaded haulers undockin- I MEAN UH, THE PRETTY PLANETS. ---

Quote: It's not a problem of _knowing_ what ships are docked... how would you like them displayed?
Being able to see them from a hangar window? How about being able to see ships coming into the docking port of the station.
It doesn't have to be exactly real time...just show the same models for whatever ships are currently docking or are docked at the station at a given time.
Quote: All in one big hangar?
Or several interconnected smaller ones. We can already see ships in stations as it is...how are they displayed now? Just display that from inside a window.
Quote: wait what was the point in showing ships again?
The same point as allowing ambulation at all: Immersion.
Quote: I hope female chars can wear male clothes, that red jacket looks all freelancer-space-ranger-cool
No, females can only wear female clothing...its hard enough to tell genders apart with Gallente characters as it is.

Believe it or not, not all cultures believe 'fat' is bad or ugly. I know that this is the way we're trained to think in the US and in parts of Europe.
Considering you could be fat without health detriments ... why not be, if you like it?
There have been studies that show that beauty is somewhat ingrained into our brains, not a cultural thing. There was a specific study that found that infants preferred looking at "attractive" faces over those that were unnattractive by current standards.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2004/sep/06/science.research2
And most of the cultures that view "fat" as attractive are developing nations where food is not guaranteed and fat is a sign of wealth/prosperity, so some people preferring an overweight person in that culture is an ends to personal security, not because of visual attractiveness.
While some of the starved supermodels aren't healthy either, the human form simulated in those walking in station pics are the example of healthy and attractive fitness/shape.

Too hard to draw a black screen with some white dots on it outside a square hole?
Same principle goes for ships in dock.
Who cares if it's not linked in some way directly to real happenings, it's a novelty luxury we can live without.

I don't know where you got that fromà
Well, there was the revelation that a ôdocking animation sequenceö was created that CCP deemed not useful and excluded from the game.
Then there was the statement at last yearÆs fanfest by CCP that seeing ships in dock serves no purpose in ambulation. And that after so many excited posts in the forums, after watching the first ambulation video with the Zealot, about finally being able to walk up to your ship.
The new space backdrops in the w-space are as brightly and atmospherically (as in air) clouded as the current ones, and that after numerous posts in the forum threads requesting more black space, or at least something that is more based on commonly perceived reality and is easier on the eyes.
The ambulation screenshots do not show any windows into space, and, as you yourself confirmed, no windows are planned ôbecause of technical constraintsö. No visible exterior, no ships, how else are we to know that we are in space?
Is it any wonder there is some misgiving about CCPÆs motives in choosing a development direction?

Proper LBD plx The latex number is not bad, but I prefer a gorgeous dress. Can be far more enticing than any skin-tight number ever will.

so if we can't have windows that we can look out into *actual live* space (which sucks terribly) how about windows with fake enviroments outside with fake ships flying around? ------------------- |
