Edited by: Jack Welsh on 16/03/2009 23:06:11 My wife was unanchoring our POS so that we could move it to a new location. As the unacnhoring timer crept down to the last few seconds, someone showed up and bumped her hauler out of range so he could steal the POS once it was unanchored. I tried to stop this by opening fire on the guy, but my ship was promptly destroyed by CONCORD. So not only did they get to STEAL our POS, they also get to loot my ship wreck. This leads me to ask two questions:
1. How could this guy even know we were unanchoring?? There must have been 15 POS's in this system. Does an unanchoring POS show up differently on a system scan?
2. Why is it that a single piece of veldspar in a jetcan is afforded attack rights, but not a 200 mil POS? It seems wholly unfair to me that just because the structure has been unanchored, it is up for grabs. Just like that can that I jettison is my property, so is that structure. Why the disparity? Is someone exploiting a loophole in the game's tracking of ownership rights?

1.0) No, they don't show up any different, he would have had to have warp to the moon to know your unachoring it.
2.1) If your so stupid to realise the ingame mechanics for opening fire on someone... you don't deserve anything of value
2.2) Its like scooping some ones drones after they have warped out / abandoned them

wrong! abandoned drones are well how you just called them; abandoned. owner is not there anymore.
in his case the owner is still there next to the pos... can't really call that an abandoned pos. like you get out of your car and it's considered abandoned good for grab.
I know it's a long shot but ccp should come up with a way that if you're next to something you own and it's taken it's considered stolen and you get kill right. if you warp away and leave the pos behind, that's considered abandoned.
anyways is sucks but it's how it is for now...

I guess I'm just stupid for assuming that stealing ore from my jetcan would confer the same rights as stealing a POS that my corp was, until 5 seconds previously, unanchoring. And as the previous poster mentioned, the POS was not abandoned and floating listlessly in space. The people who OWNED the POS were right there with it.
At least I know the difference between your and you're, but hey that's just me.

An unanchoring POS has no force field. Your onbord scanner tells you how many Pos there are and how many force fields. The hauler should have been cloaked until the last second, as the first person to scoop the Pos gets it.

Ding !
Unanchoring a POS is the most risky thing you can do, it appears as if there is no forcefield on scan, so anyone even remotely interested can find out if one is being unanchored just by being within 14 AU's and pressing scan, then counting. There is also a big timer on display for everyone to see so they can do this at any time in the hours it takes to unanchor a large POS.
Also, in Eve's history stealing from jet cans did not always allow you to attack back. This is something they added, but they never added it to any deployable or salvage, or anything else. Shooting someone not flagged to you in highsec will always result in Concord death.
In other news, Eve is not a fair game, it's just not, if you expect it to be you will just be annoyed again.

Oh the Carebear tears are delicious
If you are stupid enough to sit at an un-anchoring POS uncloaked then you deserve it being taken from you as it will now go to much better usage.
All you have to do to steal POSs from carebears like the OP is enter system and scan for the difference in number of POSs and number of shields - then scan to see if anyone is at a moon and if someone is they are either anchoring or un-anchoring a POS. A lot of people leave a POS in high sec anchored but offline so a very real indicator that some action is happening is the presence of someone at the.
You and your wife sire are FAIL!!!!!

Aye, it's unfortunate and it happens.
I fell asleep during an unanchoring process, woke up and the tower was gone.

It's kind of like your mom and pop shop operation just got swallowed up by Wal-Mart. Your town is in ruins!! Was it just you and your wife unanchoring the POS all by your lonesome? I guess that's taking a pretty big risk right there.
I agree with you in the regards that if someone is swiping your POS though, there should be some way to lock them down and fire on them in some manner. In the end though, as it stands now, I say good play to the thief for having the sense to time it all just right.

Out of curiosity, is it possible for folks to do this scoop when you are anchoring a POS, or only when unanchoring?

Tougher when anchoring since the time between "Launch for corp" and starting your anchoring process should be mere seconds and no one should know you're doing it since you don't have a shieldless POS on scanner letting people know what's up.
So theoretically, yes, possible.
Practially speaking it would probably require a corp-spy to let you know when/where the anchoring would be, very precisely, followed by you bring a cloaked hauler in close enough.
So possible, but I think it won't actually happen in practice.

The lack of justice in Eve is what makes it dynamic. I imagine if you've been playing long enough to acquire a POS then you probably like that aspect of it. Embrace the injustice mate. Being smart enough to wait it out cloaked while someone does the work and employing tactics that work in your favour is very rewarding. Self-interest is everything.
Good luck to the guy who stole your POS. And good luck to you in finding a simlar pleasure when a well thought out plan of your own pays off.

Someone could have scanned out our hauler too, that and the shieldless pos is a dead giveaway. There is a percieved shortage of open moons, and a ton of dead posses so someone may have been looking for dead posses to shoot down.. or just wanted some free expensive stuff to sell.
Either way, unanchoring a tower is risky and it sucks that you had it happen. Do be careful in the future.

There is nothing that can be done, obviously, about this particular incident, but it would seem to make sense that an anchored POS should retain ownership rights, just as a jet can does. I'm not saying prevent the theft, but at least give the right of retribution to the victim. Perhaps the process of unanchoring an object should apply ownership to the person initiating the unanchoring. shouldn't be THAT hard to code in. A quick thief would still be able to get away, but it would at leas get rid of CONCORD's protection of the thief.

you made a mistake. Admit it and get over it. A good lesson has been learnt :)
I sometimes scoop GSC that are floating over 0.8systems or higher security. For the lulz (specially when owner is some meters away), and for the profit.
This is not different. I understand your rage but this is the game. Take it or leave...

Exactly the same thing happened to me a day ago. Managed to scoop the POS up but they suicided my hauler (thank goodness the tower exploded as well :)). Lost a DG large tower . No big deal part of Eve life . What I learnt is... have a state charter in your hold worse comes to worse, reanchor the tower and laugh. You can reanchor from longer range so you can fight bump the guys and reanchor. Just don't forget the charter like I did

Ummmmm, don't shoot at people in hi-sec unless they are flashy red on you overview. Having stolen quite a few POS the tear are sometimes the best.

Thanks for choosing to publicly embarrass yourself. So someone scoops an item from open space and you chose to get yourself blown up about it.
I wouldn't have posted about this if I were you.
