Alright so with my current work/school schedule I haven't had a ton of time to play. My main is a soldier that has been primarily a mission runner and has done a little pvp. I'm looking at going into industry so I can research/build when I'm not on. I know nothing about this sector and wanted a bit of advice. Should I create a new industrialist toon? Or should I just start adding industrial skills to my current main? |

If you are truly switching gears keeping your current pilot means not needing to train the boring stuff, like learning skills or basic spaceship command and navigation stuff to fly industrials. If you decide to go back to combat you've lost all that time you could have been training up combat skills.
If you can afford more than one account its nice to have one soldier and one industrial so they can both keep training in their specific areas and support each when needed. Depending on what your soldier is up to you can also use your industrialist/trader to fund his activities.

my main is a hybrid, I have as much industrial skills as combat skills. Means when I get on and feel like blowin crap up I do that, then right before I log off I fire up themnaufacturing and adjust the sales orders.
But I also have a wife, kids, and a mortgage and can't slip 2 accounts under the wife's checkbook radar

Don't blame EVE for the mistakes you made in life.

You can train the industry skills on your current character. It also, like the above poster mentioned, means that the training on core skills and prereqs are already done.
It also gives you a bit more flexibility down the line. Do what you enjoy, and don't worry about what the min/mmaxers say.

Personally, go with adding the industrial skills to your main toon. Thats what I'm doing as well. Between work and college im in the same boat. Its nice to be able to go out, explore wormspace when your on, then start up a retriever for mining when you have to work on other things at the computer. Added bonus is having money come in from manufacturing and sales while you sleep/work/etc.

Plus, with Apocrypha characters now starting with 50k skillpoints instead of 800k skillpoints, you can't really give yourself much of a boost to any particular skillset by rolling a new character. I imagine you already have decent stats and learning skills, so you're probably best off with adding new skills to your existing main.

actually i suggest rolling an alt for research at the very least ~ as well as adding skills to your main~ , > the skill training bonus is very nice so it will take you about a month to get a excellent researcher made, then another month to get production skills and mining skills very easy and doesnt have to train after that.
> if you stick with one character, adding skills to your main is also fairly painless, (now with the skill queue)
->Questions 1 Mining? or just buy/build 2 Hulk or Retriever 3 What kind of research? Just ME/PE or t2 inventions?

Being a hybrib toon myself of some 4 and half years, ive found it rather benifical in what ever path i've choosen from pvp,pve to industrialist with latter being my current occupation, being that my clone cost some 20 mil isk every time i'm pod killed hence my retirement from pvp...
The benifit from being a hybrib is that you can build your own ships / modules etc etc where ever you are based providing you have access to the labs and what not plus BPC's aviable for end product, via pve or ratting 0.0 with abit of empire **** thrown in for good measures. It takes some good planning if you wish to provide your self with T2 items. 1. You will require a suitable toon for T2 invention if you wish for T2 items and ships, with suitable skill lvl in the science area plus some pre requirements which i'm fairly positive you may have plus suitable slots for factory and labs to make things more efficent. 2. You may wish to farm datacores which require some of the science skills if you want to build T2 items, this will be more suitable for a toon with pve experience to grind out standins via mission running for the better agents, gaining you more RP per day 3. You may wish to start an alt this will require some extra investment of isk for various skills etc etc or you could buy a suitable industrial alt for around 3 to 4 billion isk to help spread the work load.
What i use is...
My main toon, builds & invents T2 items also researchs bpos plus copys, i also use a 2nd account for bpc copying and bulding some T2 items plus two additional alt's purely for copying bpc's and researching bpo's etc. This is done on a much larger scale for what you want at the end of day, you can get away with a main toon well trian and an alt to help out, you may also require POS for aviabilitie of slots for your work.
If you have any further questions, i could lay out a more detialed plan if required.

This is actually the opposite of true, in that if you are going for a specific training line, a new character can get there quite a bit faster than the old ones. For a specific goal like this, the old 800k sp was mostly wasted. The new 50k characters, and the double training speed, combined with the skill queue will let you get a specialized alt up to speed in a flash.
