and dps it can tank using 2 dmg types:
pls be cap stable, and any ship lower than a carrier will do.

Given setups as equal as possible and given that the only modules are T1 Core Defence Field Purger rigs, Large Shield Extender IIs, and Shield Power Relay IIs the nighthawk will have a higher omni-tank than the rattlesnake. However, once you start fitting hardeners and removing LSE IIs the rattlesnake will gain a marginal advantage of 1140 to 1113. The nighthawk, however, will have a 40% smaller signature radius and roughly 45% more base velocity which will reduce damage taken, so long as you are moving in the case of velocity-based differences, by more than that 27 point difference in tanks.
IOW, the rattlesnake has a slightly higher EFT tank than the nighthawk but the nighthawk will have the higher effective tank. As these are two of top passive shield tankers, if not the top two, so that's about as close to "yes, nighthawk is the best PST" I'll post. ____________________

Maelstrom has the best sub capital active shield tank.
What are you looking to tank specifically? Chasing the biggest number in EFT is one thing, but do you actually have an application for said tank. *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

a devoter can run a pretty mean armor tank with 7 lows and excellent resists. You could get more out of an abby, but the devoter is cruiser sized.

As long as we're being silly (since the OP never asked for reasonable setups)
Golem:
Lows: 4 x Draclira's PDU
Mids: 3 x Luther Veron's Invul, 2 x Gist-X X-L Shield Booster, 2 x Estamel's Shield Boost Amp
Highs: Nothing
Rigs: 2 x Cap Control Circ. II
Implants: (not optimized for this setup), K?A1000, Squire CC4
With all skills at L5, EFT gives an omni-defence score of 7237, EHP of 120,685, and it is cap stable at 46%.

When it comes to officer gear, shield tank is more than 2x better than armor tank
That kinda sucks
also, officer tanking gear increasing tanking ability more than 2x for armor, 3-4x for shield yet officer damage gear barely crosses 1.4x
I know normal balance issues don't really apply to officer gear, but still. I wish CCP weren't so biased against damage

Edited by: Ezekiel Sulastin on 26/03/2009 11:59:40 If you're looking at tanking kin/therm heavy enemies, I would suggest looking at a passive shield Ishtar.

I have Shield Management and Shield Operation to IV and have the KVA1000 and KYA1000 implants in (total cost is 6-ish m), and with the above setup I can tank 1516 DPS vs Serpentis. Swap it for a Ballistic, and I push 2100 vs Guristas. You probably have better shield skills than I do, so you'll do better :p Couple this with Dominix drone abilities, and you have a pretty decent little mission tank.
If you wanted to take Angels with an Explosive hardener, though, I'd recommend better skills and hardwirings than I have, and if you want to take Sanshas etc. get a different ship ;) ---- zzzz ... zzzz ... zzzz |

Edited by: Angry Poster on 26/03/2009 16:00:18 Edited by: Angry Poster on 26/03/2009 15:59:51 While I lived in Guristas space we used to run 8/10 and 10/10 plexes in two HACs.
I'd be flying an Ishtar with a decent tank (1x Complex MAR on perma and a seconds faction MAR that I could run for 20 minutes with AB or infinite without AB). This allowed me to tank a few groups without any problems while my mate would do most of the "serious" tanking in his Cerb fitted with two Gistii A-Type Small Shield Boosters. This gave him a totally crazy Guristas tank (somewhere around 1,4k DPS tank VS. kin/therm) that he could perma-run without any problems. My tank on the other hand was not that good (but still around 900 DPS tank VS Guri). An extra factor was that we were both in quite small ships (signature wise) which massivly reduces damage taken from BS. Add to that an AB on perma and you shouldn't be having any issues.
The only problem with this setup is that it's only really strong against kin/therm NPCs. Otherwise you have to fit tons of hardners to get the resists needed and that will certainly nerf you.
Also there are (or were?) plexes with traps here and there (like EM damage in last stage even though the plex was Guristas or crazy 100k damage missiles that can only be tanked by a dedicated ship).
I think in the end there is no "best tank". There are certain ships that are good for specific tasks (like a dual Gistii A-Type Small Shield Boosted Cerb for Guri) but I doubt there is any kind of "one tank fits all" sort of deal... unless you're going for a really weak omnitank or something or are willing to pay billions for complex/officer mods or something).
Edit: I forgot about the broadsword... That didn't exist yet at the time when I was living in Guri space so that wasn't an option. I guess thats probably also one of the more crazy passive shield tanks around (and may well beat the dual Gistii Cerb against most damage types).
