Hey guys, I'm in the market for buying my first battleship... and its between the mega & the hyperion, but I'm unsure as to what I should spend my money on. Cost aside, which in your opinion is best for PvE Lvl IV missions and the occasional drop into WH space? Any feedback would be appreciateed.
Oh, another quick question. Jump drives for capital ships i.e. Thantos, do you always need someone the other side of the jump to lay a beacon or can you jump yourself from system to system. I was just wondering, as its my ultimate goal to be a carrier pilot... cheers!

Level 4s are best done by a Dominix. I'm not sure which is better between those two, but I've fallen in love with an electron, dual-LAR hyperion since the web nerf (I hate plated mega). Might prefer the tanking bonus, and not using 5 heavies in favour of mediums on a hyperion for sleepers.

You need someone else to setup a cyno field at the destination. They will be stuck in space for 10 min, so will likely die in low sec. Usually people create a second account simply to create these cynos for their carrier.

I like Hyperion, because its big ;)
for PVP both ships are awesome, for PVE take a domi, you wont regret it.

To answer the OP's question, of the two the Hyperion is a better PVE ship because of the extra turret and the repping bonus.

if your tanking skills are godly i could see a hyperion assraping most rats in short order, the rep bonus and extra turret are a huge bonus tbh
although the mega will always hold a place in my blackened little heart - the best pve ship tbh for the gallente has always been the domi, solid tank which you can run forever and let your drones do the talking

I used to use a domi all the time when I was running missions. And if you have good skills I wouldn't look any other way. Same goes for really bad skills. But that mediocre skills section is where mega/hype really shines. The way I see it, Megathron gets alot more damage, tower dps being about the same, well slightly worse, -1 turret but +37.5% tracking, the drones however is heavies instead of mediums(be it 4 heavies or 5 depending on mission). The tanking bonus is somewhat wasted, since most people won't use more than 3 weapon upgrades anyway.
The issue with all 3 of them is fitting. If you want to max one out you will constantly run into walls of CPU limitations. But like most have said, if you don't really know what you're about to do, go with the domi, but realize that it might not be optimal for your skills and playing style. It's not a bad gunboat. Parrots, commence!

Mega > hype for missions imo. Better tracking which is important. ---------------------------------------------

The dominix is definitely the superior PvE ship. The flexibility to take on all size of rat ships by varying the drones you use gives it an unsurpassed flexibility, and the permarun dual LAR tank is fantastic.
Between the hyperion and the megathron, the meg has always been my favourite. I always find the hyperion to be lack lustre, especially in PvP.

Edited by: Easley Thames on 26/03/2009 13:28:33 The domi excels at mission-running with very good drone skills (including sentries). The hyperion reps harder than the mega and has more damage potential in theory. However, many pilots find an additional low-slot preferable since damage mods, armor tank mods and tracking enhancers all fit in this rack and 6 lows can leave the hyperion short on space for sufficient numbers of the aforementioned modules.
The mega and hype are very similar in their capabilities so they are both fine choices.
In wormholes the sleeper AI likes to pick on drones so I'd say avoid the domi unless you don't mind micro-managing or using sentries in scoop range. |

I started doing L4s again the other day with a 425mm, single repper, dual magstab Megathron and I've had to warp out once on Worlds Collide and once on Silence the Informant, other than that it's been smooth sailing and I look good doing it.

He's right. The best of all : mega navy ... a little more expensive, but a low slot for a the third MFS ;)[keep in mind Easley that you can use drones with mega too ^^ 5 heavy T2 or sentry T2, that count]

I currently mission in a domi (well, when I mission with Liang.........) but I plan to buy a Hype soon. If for no other reason than that I wanna try it out. :P After that? I'll buy (another) mega and try that out too.

Domi is the best Gallente PvE ship out there it can also be a really nice PvP ship(if you know how to fit it) A Mega is a DPS ship in most fleets cause it can deal some massive damage with 5 T2 heavies but a Hyperion has endurance with 5 guns 3 vamps you can run those reppers for a long while but that is more for a 1vs1 from what I have seen. I use a domi for WH along with my buddy in a raven because Sleepers have INSANE range.
