This has got to be the new worst named skill in the game. First of all, Rangefinding isn't a word. Second of all, it sounds like something some poorly educated person would say - EVE Online, being a game of maths, economics and science, should not condone such language.
I suggest we rename it back to Triangulation. Triangulations pretty much means finding out where it is by using range, so why not just stick to that?

Because people where whining about triangulation. EVE doesn't use trilangulation, more like multilateration or even more precise quadlateration. And since quadlateration is even worse then rangefinding... _

sure, but i'd still prefer something uncreative like... idk... astrometric analysis, or whatever, over rangefinding - putting the gist back into logistics |

Yes, agreed, rangefinding is horrible. Something like astrometric analysis, or plain advanced astrometrics would be much better.

No, but it's easy enough to see how it's a neologism built on ‘rangefinder’ and thus understand what it's all about.

Well, triangulation gets everything wrong about what it actually does. Triangualtion also does not use ranges to find out where stuff is — it uses angles (hence triangulation).
As above poster said, the proper word would be quadrilateration — four probes measuring ranges, not three probes measuring angles. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |
