Why you may ask? Take a look at the new ships, ie assault ships, interceptors and so on. The only difference between them and their "parents" is the colour!. So, this is why paint jobs won't be implemented for a loooong time. For CCP to differentiate between the different ships, visually speaking, they have to change their colour. Making a whole new model takes too much time since they are quite complex and need to fit into the theme of the faction.
If paint jobs were readily available to us, it would play hÇll with the current ship-system. It could in part be solved by restrictions on colour-use on the shiptype, but I think it would just be too much trouble.

dude, you have no idea. Allowing players to paint their ships means every new ship I see I have to download that texture map from YOUR PC. Can you say "exploit"? If I were a ganker, which 50% of the players are, I would paint my ship every day. Me and my buds would warp to the battle and wha-la, made-to-order lag.
no thank you

The new ships have more then just a new paintjob .
Anyway, what good is a paintshop anyway? From range, there is no way of looking at another person's ship so that the decals and new colours are pointless to add.

I dont know about the other ships, but the Minmatar Interceptors have slightly different models, too. The Slasher has different wings.

They all have extra little bits stuck on them like new engines, wings etc. As the devs keep saying the reason they don't have new models is because they are tech 2 variations of the ships, not new ships all together. Look at the destroyers and battlecruisers and they look very different on the whole from the standard crusiers.

Well, IMHO the biggest difference between inty frigs and regular frigs is the paintjob. It's really what strikes me as the biggest difference...

CCP could design a number of textures for each ship and then the player can simply choose between them and the appropriate colours and markings for it. All information regarding textures, markings, decals and colours would be patched as to provide every client with all the data necessary to draw them.
When a ship jumps in, all your client has to load from that character jumping in will be ID numbers for those textures, markings, decals and colours....

TBH the only ships with diffrent decals should be event/faction and new ships that come out.
WTF would be the point in a IMPOC or FEDTHRON if it only had better stats, as they never leave empire the stats make no diffrence but the colour makes it worth flying in empire.
If u think a impoc or fedthron would be worth 5 billion when any ship can be any colour ur off ur rocker.

Some extra twiddly bits hardly makes it an entirely new model, i personally think they were to lazy to make a new model, which isnt that complicated, its hardly like eves ships are animated, once you make a ship model, its literally ready to put into the game, you dont have to give it a skeleton and animate and give its joins movement!
Just another shortcut to release things quicker.

Nah. The ships are upgraded and based on specific hulls (eg, vengeance = upgraded Punisher, etc). This was the case when I first looked at the tech II ships on eve-db way, way back.
Still, it IS easier then creating entirely new ship, but to say it's dev laziness goes a bit to far

Right now, EVE chugs trying to load a fleet of a half-dozen identical ships.
And you want them to all look different? Are you *INSANE*? -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

I actually like the idea of flying upgraded versions of existing ships. It feels real somehow. Having a fleet of 100s of different hulls, don't know, would feel weird. Once you get a nicely working hull you work with it, tinker with it, upgrade, adjust, that sort of thing. You don't just go out and start all over again. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |
