I haven't had anybody call the game by strange names. I did get the following comment once, however:
"You must have to be really smart to play this game, the font is so tiny!"

I try to mention EVE unless I can explain it in full. Usually it's a combination of "internet spaceships", "online friends" that turned into "real life friends". If they're not bored yet I'll tell 'em about Fanfest, show them this map, display EVE on the three monitor setup (often an incentive to the change topics to EVE in the first place).
I continue with how social interaction in EVE is organized: Empire, 0.0, Lowsec, corporations, alliances, gangs/fleets and who my friends and enemies are. Sometimes I get to go as far as tell them what you can actually do in EVE as an individual and finally get to the... internet spaceships.
Most people tend not to bring up the subject afterwards.

Hah, yeah, I gave up calling it Eve when talking to my folks about it. I just call it internet spaceships now... Obviously they're tech-neophytes.

I discovered that any attempt to explain it tends to fail quickly unless the person is already into gaming, or has a job in IT/Development.

I had a friend that used to call EVE "Spreadsheets in space". My dad saw me doing some market stuff and he thought I was doing university work. He also thinks Diablo 2 and Everquest 2 are games about chasing a wee man around a field, though (third person perspective).
One of my brothers plays EVE too, which is cool. Another other doesn't play but he knows enough about it to sort of fake that he plays :p. It's kind of funny, sometimes he'll come in and say something ridiculous like "I was mining rats in my dominix in 0.0 space but I got cyno jammed and my armour tank resistances were too low to tank the jammers.". I think he feels left out that the two of us play EVE and he doesn't.
