My old roommate used to call it "that stupid space ship game." I was annoyed a first, but then I realized everytime he saw me playing it, I was running courier missions  .

people who play a lot of MMO's: " yeah ok like Ultima, death is expensive...but gear didnt matter in UO so why-TF does it take an hour to refit for every death?"

My mate's girlfriend and I once had a conversation on the subject of EVE that went on for several minutes in the following vein:
Her: SPACESHIPS!
Me: SPACE SHIPS!
SPAGSHAPS!
SPETZAPS!

SPORK SOCKS!

Well, my family is pretty good at it, granted Im only 16 and live with just my father.
He is a bit of a history buff, and since I live out in 0.0 abd we talk about the strategic side of eve... As in I will fill him in on the latest battle, what each side did, etc... But, he refers to it as "The Game" in the end, and says im a bit of a hermit, infact, he says im alot of a hermit =(. Kinda annoying, as Im the one who cooks every day. As for my mother or brothers, I started playing eve after the last time I saw them almost 2 years ago. Haven't gotten a girlfriend to whinge about my addiction, but in Adelaide Northern Suburbs, a nerdish interwebs spaceship addict like me isn't exactly likely to find his type :).
My friends are pretty good about it, I tried to get a few into it, but noone really had the patience for it. They occasionally stir me about my little addiction, well, my big addiction :). They dont see how I can get my head around a complicated game.
I just say that im here for the pew pew =)

I've learned to just avoid the whole issue of explaining. Only people who know i play eve is the ones who play eve with me, outside of that, family, other friends, other gamers, they dont know, nor will they ever know i play eve.
Don't have to waste my time explaining to narrow minded people why i have to like something in a logical way. Sometimes the simple answer "I just like it, now F off!"
Its like we going to say oh, your mom, and saying why the hell you stay out in the yard all freakin day planting ****, id be bored in 2 minutes, explain to me why thats so fun for you, i dont get it, you suck, looossseerrr!!!
Ok ok, lol.

When I first started playing this game I had a friend that had tried it (but got griefed in the tutorial = emoragequit) and he used to say to me: "Oh you're playing that single player MMO again." 
Now he just calls me a nerd (and he plays freakin wow of all things).
Most of the time I'm content enough in the irony not to respond.

My wife: "Game Game Game.....that's all you ever do." or "Turn off that stupid Star Trek game thing."
My 2 year old son has recently began sitting on my lap and giggles every time I warp away from a station or object and look at the view behind the ship. He also laughs when something is coming into view that I'm warping to. The wife has scolded me on many occassions telling me not to get him addicted too. Can't wait till he can play with me.
