trust me, my hardware can keep up. since i started playing EVE.. nvidia 8600 gt - 2 caps just explode out of the blue. luckly still works. nvidia 9600 gso - intense heat while sitting on station, no longer works. latest drivers? yes. disabled effects on game? yes. tweaking of driver settings? yes. cooling? yes. has this ever happened while playing other games? no. most of the problems seem to happen while in a station. so if this isn't a problem with the client, i donno then.
Generally speaking, lowering the graphics quality won't affect the heat generation. It just ups the FPS. (Unless you specifically prevent that.) Same goes for tweaking the driver settings.
Best to just assume your GPU is going to overheat and plan the cooling accordingly. Whatever cooling you have now clearly isn't enough. Note, that this does not just mean the GPU cooling itself, but the entire case. If the overheated air gets trapped inside the case, no GPU cooling device will be enough to prevent it from overheating.
Also note that EVE, especially when set to "interval immediate" (as far as I can see), pushes your GPU a lot further than most games, so the fact that this doesn't happen with other games doesn't really mean much.
I run EVE well enough on a nVidia 7 series AGP card, so if that ain't overheating, neither should a properly cooled 8 or 9 series card.
nVidia drivers are always pretty questionable tho. They might possibly be causing your card to overheat when it shouldn't be. (Wouldn't be the first time.) Not that there is much you can do about that if it is

First and only crash was caused by having the Fitting screen open when I minimized the game.
Confirmation that fitting ships has finally been nerfed.

Just hopping on the band wagons of crashing. It crashes for me too when I am on the fitting screen and I alt-tab out of the game. When I alt-tab back in, EVE hangs. I am on Windows 7 though so I guess I should not complain - just a nodding in agreement with anyone else having problems

I believe the "fitting screen alt+tab" and "switching ships with fitting open" issues are already fixed on SiSi. (At least, they seemed to be last time I was on there. (Like 3 days ago))
Should therefore be fixed next patch.
Edit: Spelling... I blame my keyboard!

I used to get the message that my nvidia card was not getting enough power And the fps would grind to halt when i ran eve withall effects on and everything high Updated drivers, gave it a hoover increased all the case fans speed and added a new one
now works a dream with all effects on, 1680x1050 res fullscreen
This is on an old 7800gs agp card
Maybe its overheating, i dunno, this is what worked for me
my 2 cents

If that happened to you there is something wrong with your hardware. Thats a really new card and there is no reason whatsoever it would overheat on EVE.
If it was just me and/or happening with some other games aswell, I'd say yes could be hardware, but a lot of people seem to have this problem (and only with Eve) and for a lot (if not all) of them interval=1 solved it.
Most games have v-sync already enabled so you won't see it happen there that much, only Eve has it at immediate, which causes fps spikes in some locations in Eve, which on some systems could cause your graphics card to overheat.
Whether it's CCP's fault, the hardware's fault, the operating system/driver's fault or a combination of those, is still debatable though.

Game was running smooth as silk (except for the sound being totally screwed with apocrypha) until the last patch. Apparently by "improving stability" they meant "introducing constant crashes to desktop while in missions"
New build eats my drones. Looking forward to when they fix it. Until then I find I'm playing a lot less.

Edited by: Funtclaps on 15/04/2009 00:33:51 Yep, getting various fitting screen related crashes here too. Also, CTRL Q'ing seems to lead to a crash with EVE not shutting down properly yet exiting via the ESC menu works just fine. More crashes whilst in space than ever before, all this started with the small patch after Apocrypha release, initial release of Apoc seemed very stable. Not game destroying but still it's annoying that CCP seem to have released such a buggy/unstable build.
Edit - realised I have no idea what the current build/patch number is :D

i have always had issues with eve crashing. i got frequent desyncs and occasional hard crashes.
but ever since apocrypha, its been abominable. its at the point where i am afraid to release my drones. we speak of 5-10 crashes or random desyncs a day.

you know, just because you have what you think is an uber computer does not mean it is uber.
half of you whelps out there probobly dont know how to configure your computers, right?
i just got eve running great on a 3 year old laptop, amd turion64 2.1 mhz chip ati radeon xpress200. yes, running great.
and guess what? no crashes.
no, the problem lies with your computers, the isp you choose, and how it is configured.
thank god i am not such as you.

Yes, that's correct, all the people experiencing crashes since Apocrypha who had either no or rare crashing prior to apocrypha obviously have PC hardware issues that all coincidently began the day of the apoc patch.
Yep, that's what it is, these people all became utterly clueless and their hardware all began to fail the day of the patch, it's all just a big coincidence.
I really hope you're just the common or garden troll, otherwise you really are one of the most clueless and condescending mouth-breathing window-lickers I've come across on this forum, and by this forum's pitifully low standards, sadly, that's really saying something.

hi. im an industry trained computer technician currently at uni doing software engineering. you, on the other hand, are an idiot for making a blanket statement like that on the internet.
