ok I got a prototype cloak today in the hopes that I will be able to cloak as I travel through gates without being shot by campers only to find out thats a no no.
Second reason for getting one was so I could cloak quick if I was minning and there were a lot of high bounty NPC's so I could grab my container contents and then get out sharpish but thats also a no no ?
Anyone got any decent ideas that a proto cloak can be usefull for apart from sitting on gate watching the new paintjob dry.
Is the Covert Ops Cloaking Device the same as the prototypes in respect to gates and traveling through belts if so I will not waste time training up for it.
DO NOT LOCK THIS TOPIC I NEED HELP. THERE IS NO RANTS OR COMPLAINTS I AM LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS AND CANT GET THEM IF THIS TOPIC IS LOCKED.

The covert op frigs and cloaks can warp cloaked and I think they have no velocity limitation. Not sure though to be honest. As far as the prototype I cloak goes, It's use is mainly for scouting systems and information gathering, like on fleet composition and such things.
That's about all I can think of really. It's a bit expensive for this purpose though, so maybe someone else can suggest another use for it?

The differences that sit the covert ops cloak apart from the other cloaks are:
1) You can warp while cloaked.
and
2) They take an obscene amount of cap to operate.. more than any ship besides the covert ops frigs could possibly hope to muster.
I think you get a tiny fraction of speed improvement over the next best cloak, but it's not worth even mentioning. (When you cloak, your top speed falls dramatically)
Cloaked ships are useful for:
1. Acting as warp relays - have your gank squad warp to you, right on top of your enemy.
2. Eavesdropping on NPC-infested belts
3. Spying on this week's enemy
4. Improved safety when warping to gates - warp-in at 60, cloak when you get there. Turn off of the warp-in path and watch. It's EXTREMELY hard to be found once you get off the beaten path. The more seconds that pass means any enemy that tries to uncloak you will have that much more difficulty. You can align your ship to warp while cloaked, then activate it and get out fast if need be.
Caveat for number 4:
Your interceptor can get away easier, imho..
In short -- cloaks are interesting toys, but they do have a very very narrow application -- and for that they are powerful.

a cloak by itself isn't all that great, however with bookmarks and the tech 1/2 cloak it's very usefull.
For mining you can't use a jet can and the cloaking device as you have to be within 1500 meters of it to drop stuff in it. You can't cloak if your under 2000 meters of any object. Cans, ships, roids, etc.
For normal travel with a tech 1 or 2 cloak it's main advantage is...
You jump into the system in an indy fully loaded with goodies, oh no! 2 pirate battleships and 2 frigates camping the gate. Hit the cloak (hopefully they or any other item isn't within 2k) align for the next gate, drop the cloak and use an insta. You have a warp delay of about 1 second.
For fleet I can give you some interesting tactics if your corp is friendly to us :P
Covert ops cloaks are most usefull for fleet engagements, if your into heavy PVPing then it might be worth it. But the time invested on the skills for a covert ops frigate+cloak are pretty heavy. Electronics 5, cloak 4, frigate 5, electronics upgrades 5, and you'll want atleast covert ops 4 to be able to use other mods with the covert ops cloak.

Can I put a basic proto cloak on a covert ops frig and warp cloaked? Or does it have to be the top of the range cloak???
Is it the ship or the cloak that allows you to warp cloaked???

Don't forget you can't activate any modules while youÆre cloaked. So don't think you can MWD or Afterburn while cloaked. The Covert frig goes 300m\s while cloaked which isn't bad but itÆs not MWD speed.
ItÆs a very expensive fragile ship to take into combat. If you get caught in an enemy grid, uncloak and get targeted, you best Warp out ASAP. Otherwise your toast, remember, no cloaking while targeted. One of the other best features of the Covert Ops Frig is it warps at 13.5 au\s (My buzzard does anyway). So once you escape the Interceptors you were watching, you can cloak in the next grid you arrive in a couple of seconds before your enemy follows you there.
You can cloak before warp and stay cloaked while in warp. But no going into warp uncloaked and cloaking while warping! Get me?!
With Covert ops level 4 the Buzzard has the Ability to utilize all 5 of its mid-slots. You can shut down any enemy in this game 1 vs. 1 as long as they don't have ECCM on.
Once you try it out I think you'll like the ship. With cloaking level 4 you can lock just 6 seconds after uncloaking which is really quick IMO.
On last thing that kind of crappy but necessary is you can't cloak again for 30 seconds after you uncloak. So No appearing, saying hi, and then disappearing.

Here is what I did when i first got mine:)
After 26 jumps I arraived at my destionation and found a little blob 3 jumps away from a station. I scaned 5 bs and 1 hauler on the range scanner. When I uncloke from the jump into system, a Scorpion BS comes out of warp and sees me. I decide to go to a nearby moon and scan the gate wich leads to the station - it's clear and I warp. When I come out of warp its still clear. I place myself under it at at 2.4 km away. Then I turn on my cloaking device. 4 min later the gate goes of and a Crow interceptor appears. It can't see me so it warps out. Then 2 bs arriave at the gate, they sit 15 km away from it. Then 5 mins later the last 2 BS arrive and a Hauler, the Mammoth. All the BS is moving around the gate at 8 - 15 km. But the hauler slowly approches the Gate... I am checking my scanner all the time to make sure that they dont come into 2 km. of me That would turn of my clok. The Hauler jumps, I uncloak and Jump in aswell. To my surprise there is no1 at the other side besides me and that hauler. I engage it fast and as the hauler begins to blow up, the gate starts to activate. Thats is the point where iam rolling on the floor laughing my ass off Laughing Laughing Twisted Evil

Came across an apoc with a cloak a few days ago.....don't ask.
Another downside of a cloak is afaik you can't go into cloak if you're being locked. It's irrelevant whether they've actually locked you or not, just as long as they're in the process of doing so. Killed a Helios 2/3 days ago in my Incursus because of this - just a shame it's covert cloaking device II got destroyed, it's never nice to see 120mil evaporate :/

No, you can't activate any modules while cloaked. What i was refering to was the fact that you can fit 5 modules in your mid-slots because you have enough CPU to do so.

Covert op cloak takes no cap to operate. But it does take 5000 CPU to fit. The Covert ops skill is what allows a covert op ship to fit the mod. With covert ops lvl 4 it only takes 100 CPU to fit the Covert op Cloak (98% reduction in COvert Ops CLoaking device CPU requirements). Leaves me with 15 powergrid and 260 CPU to fit everything else on a Buzzard.

When I cloak with a proto cloak after I deactivate it once selecting BM I want I still have to wait the average warp time for that ship ? is there something I am doing wrong or is my timing off ?
