(not my own work here) Stimulus Package Explained
"Sometime this year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format:
"Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment? "A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.
"Q. Where will the government get this money? "A. From taxpayers.
"Q. So the government is giving me back my own money? "A. No, they are borrowing it from China . You children are expected to repay the Chinese.
"Q. What is the purpose of this payment? "A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.
"Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ? "A. How's the weather up your way?"
Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:
* If you spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China . * If you spend it on gasoline it will go to Hugo Chavez, the Arabs and Al Queda * If you purchase a computer it will go to Taiwan . * If you purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico , Honduras , and Guatemala (unless you buy organic). * If you buy a car it will go to Japan and Korea . * If you purchase prescription drugs it will go to India * If you purchase ****** it will go to the Taliban in Afghanistan * If you give it to a charitable cause, it will go to Nigeria .
And none of it will help the American economy.
We need to keep that money here in America . You can keep the money in America by spending it at yard sales, going to a baseball game, or spend it on prostitutes, beer (domestic ONLY), or tattoos, since those are the only businesses still in the US

Stimulus package will only reward stupid corporations and stubborn trade unions for a short while, then they will go backrupt.
Its far better to let them all die off and good businesses come in to replace them. At the moment we are screwing up our tax rates for future generations.

I don't 'get' this economic stimulus crap. I was stimulated well enough when gas went from $4.25 to $1.99 (even lower at one point between the two). The points made above are pretty good too. I would like to know the grand total of the entire package. Step back, take a look, and have people in power ask themselves...could we have done something better with this?

Mostly its the fascination with Keynesian economics which serves as an excuse to spend spend spend.
Looking at debt compared as a fraction of gdp it isn't all doom and gloom. I just don't see the situation getting better in the near future.

Alright, serious mode now.
The idea behind a "stimulus package" is that it gets cash flow moving again. You see, money is not gained or lost when you spend it or when you get a pay check. Money just gets shuffled around - and that's the way it should be. Unfortunately, when the money stops flowing, we end up in a rut like this. So the idea behind a stimulus package is to jolt the economy back into motion - sort of like priming a water pump. Unfortunately, the international economy is a very BIG water pump, so you need a lot of money to prime it. In theory, the influx of money will get consumers to start spending money again, and if they start spending money again then this will cause demand for products and services. In order to meet this demand, corporations will supposedly hire these same consumers in order to produce these goods. The corporations then pay the consumers to provide the services which the consumers then spend on said products and services. And thus the economy (in theory) recovers.

We dont really need any more economic stimulous, the recession is already OVER. No one will notice the recession is already over until 6-8 months from now when they look back and say, "hey look, the DOW is up 4k points since March".

We didn't need any stimulus to begin with. This whole damn thing is just a political payback from the politicians to their best supporters, a cover-up for excessive banking regulations that forced banks to make bad loans to people that couldn't pay them back, and a power grab using expensive social program spending to lock more people into the nanny state. It's brazen and disgusting. The founders are spinning in their graves to see what we've done to their country. Fix the Wardec System! Upgrade the Probing System! |

The previous administration's pairing of inefficient tax policies with a near-total lack of oversight on the hugely costly wartime expenditures was obviously not working. Their resistance to intelligent oversight policies of businesses also allowed billions of dollars a year to get sheltered from American tax law in offshore tax havens, robbing the US government of tax revenue. Continuing to reward companies who shipped American jobs overseas also at least helped to contribute to some of our current employment deficiencies. Regardless of what you think of the current administration/congress's plans, I hope you also recognize that the previous system caused more harm than good to the average American.
It may also do this thread some service if it's pointed out that the bank bailout TARP program and the stimulus package are two different things, so when talking about the stimulus package it doesn't add much to the discussion to bring up toxic assets. The stimulus package is about creating jobs, not fixing the mistakes that the banks made. Yes, complications of the bank problems factor into the need for the stimulus package, but the ultimate goal of the stimulus package is different from that of TARP funding.
Anyway, history shows that a national spending program aimed at creating jobs can work in the right conditions. The New Deal of course being the big example. There's a truly bizarre meme that made its way around American media circles over the last few months that the New Deal made the Depression worse, despite the fact that the hard numbers say otherwise (except for the one year where spending was reigned in and the productivity dropped.) The position that the New Deal failed is about as popular among economists as creationism is among biologists, tbh.

QFT.
The other thing about the New Deal was they waited too long to initiate the process. That is the mistake that this administration is trying to avoid by trying something totally new and shoving the legislation through as fast as possible. I do not necessarily agree with everything that is happening with it or the way that it is happening, but it is quasi new way to handle this situation and I will wait and see what happens. And boy if for some odd chance that this works miracles I will have such a big smile on my face for about the rest of my life, well at least for a little while and depending how much we actually "lose" in the process. If it fails then it will not be much of a surprise.

It can aggravate me pretty severely when the people who never said a bad word against the Bush administration intone the Founders when it comes to the government reaching into the realm of commerce. An orchestrated program of torture and secret prisons, voter disenfranchisement, government funded "faith-based" programs, warrantless spying, and rampant militarism have either reemerged or originated in the last few years as official government policy. If anything is making the Founders spin, it isn't government regulation of business.

Yeah but to be fair the doubling of the national debt under GW Bush means that any budget will be getting paid for by our grandchildren. Actually our grandchildren would be paying off debt even if the debt had remained stable over the last eight years.

We have taxes for many reasons, some of the most important of which are ensuring we don't return to Colonial levels of access to education and social assistance, and of course maintenance of defense forces. The Founders wrote the ability to tax into the Constitution. Businesses who conduct commerce in the US should not be able to hoard cash they'd otherwise owe in taxes in offshore havens. It's not like that money is going to hire more workers, pay the current workers better, or invest in more advanced technology. In fact if they could show that that's what they use it for I think the government should give them a pass, but I'd bet the reality is that most of it goes towards executive compensation, which we don't need any more of.
If Japanese CEO's can run their companies as well if not better than our CEO's can in comparable industries for twelve times higher pay than their company's average worker, then our CEO's in comparably sized corporations in the same industry should be able to do their job for that much as well. Or at least they could do it for less than 300-400 times the pay of the average worker in their corporation. That was something of a tangent I guess but the point is that:
1. taxes owed are taxes owed 2. if you use your tax haven to benefit the top level of the upper echelon of the outer crust of your company, screw you, especially considering the staggering levels of unemployment and antiquated automotive and energy industries we have in this country.

Recession is a frame of mind. The American media has been using scare tactics and sensationalism for a while. Investors are manipulating the **** out of the stock market as well.
Don't even get me started on what the large companies are up to.
People should stop being ****ing stupid and budget their incomes properly. I know people that make 110,000 dollars a year and cant pay the mortgage on a 100,000 dollar house. Seriously how the ****. |
