Anyone else having this problem? It¦s preventing me from playing the game as it either results in major slow gameplay or server status being unknown (both TQ and SiSi). The problem IP address is 213.200.79.130 and the DSNName is telecity-redbus-gw1.ip.tiscali.net.

hmm, are you using a tiscali owned ISP? They are just as bad. Also, I think the dropped packets are probably intentional, Ti****ty were blocking EVE a while back. Guide to forum posting |

I don¦t think my local ISP is Tiscali owned but I¦m on the phone right now going to ask who they do business with over in the UK :)
I heard about the blocking thing as well, it was a while back though. Wonder if they have taken it up again

Actually, BE* do have a Fair Usage Policy, but that's what it actually is, Fair Usage, not a fixed limit. The actual wording from the FUP is
Quote:
What about excessive network usage?
If it’s felt that any Be member’s Internet activities are so excessive that other members are detrimentally affected, Be may give the member generating the excessive web traffic a written warning (by email or otherwise). In extreme circumstances, should the levels of activity not immediately decrease after the warning, Be may terminate that member’s services.
Which in practise means you have to work pretty hard to get in trouble. Before we swapped to them, I looked into it heavily and have read reports of people pulling down 900gb+ of data in a month and not hearing any complaints. The main way they can actually do that is due to the fact that they're a partial LLU supplier, so aren't having to pay BT wholesale rates for data traffic, but instead have their own backhaul network.

Thank you CCP Explorer for the feedback, glad it's being looked at. Today has been no play day for me unfortunately as I have been struggling to try everything I could to get things going again.
It so happens that I am in Iceland and I am using Vodafone as my local ISP. I see now from the ping plotter that the packets are no longer going through designated Tiscali nodes and no packets dropped but I'm still not able to play the game (either on TQ or SiSi) due to failure to log in/and or extreme lag and socket closed issues.
I've filed a bug report on one of those accounts. Hope it helps.

Its ADSL, so it depends a *lot* on your telephone line quality and distance from the exchange.
The number of people who can get 20MB on that package is tiny. You literally have to live next to the exchange.
I'm on that 20MB package and I sync at 7meg. Nothing 'wrong' with the connection, it's just the way the technology works.

My meaning was slightly ambiguous. I didn't want to imply that Be have no FUP (although compared to many other ISPs it certainly feels that way), just that the one they had was different.

Good work CCP Explorer, the data packet loss was much to high through their nodes to be acceptable.
But here is the mistery, I logged in at 7:45 EVE time and as you said no Tiscali nodes and everything was working excellent. Breezed through log in and character selection and lag ingame was no where to be found. I check the ping plotter and see no Tiscali nodes so I think \o/ WIN!
BUT I WAS WRONG!
I come back now at 10:00 EVE time and things are back to being server status unknown, stuck on authentication and/or disconnected due to connection to server lost/Socket closed issues. It's about the same time this started happening to me yesterday. Seems I'll have another day of not playing EVE. Good thing there is good weather so I can go out and enjoy this so called real life
Looks like prime time traffic throttling to me, who ever is doing it I don't know.
Cheers

I have had dealings with Tiscali when they took over the good ISP I was with and moved me over to their network.
They love to advertise things like
Quote: 8 Meg Broadband for only ú9.99 a month
However, you connect at 8 meg but have a poor cap and their contention ration is something like 800:1, thats 800 users per 8 meg pipe link giving a download speed of about a 1/8meg connection. They also use similar contention ratios for back haul and links, mainly so they look good but cheap however once you scratch the surface its very poor with bad packet loss. Last dealing with them before I left them was "Packet loss is not a problem with web browsing just refresh the page, thanks for calling." ----
God gave us a brain, he also gave us a voice.
Shame some people have yet to connect them.

Just a little update, I snuck into work and had a play on my computer there and everything is running smooth. Totally different routing as well, not sure which ISP it was though.
Called Vodafone Iceland earlier and they pointed the finger at CCP and said quote unquote "CCP's computers can't talk to our computers"
Either way if this continues both Vodafone and CCP will lose subscriptions IMO

We just contacted Vodafone Iceland telling them that we still have a problem. After some tweaking then we have symmetric routing with low latency but we have confirmed in-house cases of not being able to login via Vodafone Iceland. We are still working with them trying to resolve the issue.

It is not known exactly what the problem was but Vodafone's QoS engine was misbehaving. Vodafone made configuration changes to bypass the problem (putting traffic to 87.237.38.0/23 in the top priority queue) and will open a case with the vendor.
In the process of resolving this issue we discovered an asymmetric routing problem that we fixed on our end (as much as we can fix the internet on our own). It was caused by a couple of ISPs not talking to one another. Sometimes it's remarkable that the internet works.

Might this have anything to do with the LINX issue that has been plaguing EVE with disordered packets since November? Or is that unrelated? ____________________ CCP: Catering to the cowards of a cold, harsh universe since November, 2006. |
