Kidjanot...
Pretty sure everyone here is aware that Somali pirates have been hijacking ships at an alarming rate the past year or so.
Today they nabbed their first American flagged ship (owned by a Dutch company) with 20 American sailors aboard (not sure if that was the whole crew). The Maersk Alabama was carrying emergency relief to Kenya.
Apparently this time the pirates found a crew not so willing to just go along with it. They fought back and retook the ship from the pirates, capturing one (heard they threw three overboard...just rumor though).
Glad to see the bad guys take one on the chin for a change.

Why am I reminded of the scene in Pirates of the Caribbean when the British Marines are boarding the Black Pearl?

umm...you are aware that all this started because of fishing ships taking fish from somalian waters and leaving the somali's with no fish to, well, fish right? Doesnt that make the pirates the repressed underdogs fighting against the bad guys? (ie everyone else)

Yeah...seems early reports are not that good unfortunately.
TV news is running here at work and they now say three pirates escaped the ship with the ship's captain as a hostage. The crew has one pirate held captive as well.
Somehow I doubt the pirates will be willing to pay for their buddy back but will be ransoming the ship's captain.

Then maybe they should take to defending their waters from fishing ships rather taking freighters hostage.
That'd be like me picking all the apples from your apple orchard so you go and hold up a gas station in retribution cuz somehow that makes sense in your world.

I'm thinking we can keep them away from American ships at least simply by air dropping copies of the movie Deliverance (dubbed into the local language of course) on Somalia. Then re-name all ships with the name of southern states.
They won't get near those ships after that.

Not sure but I thought there was an international convention against arming merchant ships. The reason being is nobody wants well armed ships in their ports and drunken (or soon to be drunken) sailors with access to weapons roaming their streets.
I could be wrong though...thought I read something about that though.

there isnt Laws against Arming merchent ships
In this day and age where piracy has become worse and pirates have become more bold, (look at the Indian ocean and oil supply lines) even so the place is roaming with American,British,Iranian,Indian, Turkish and other war ships they still are able to attack easily)
some ships already have small fire arms on them an example is the cruise liner crew who faught off that attack using small arms.

Its kinda a pitty they couldnt hold onto the ship. If they did that would have gotten the US navy involved which would have jammed cruise missiles up their bungholes. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Actually its kinda like a country with no social order in the least while being ruled by warlords and drug leaders for several decades since they asked for the colonies to move out.
I heard it was rather nice before then though.

dont be stupid only time the US navy or any other navel force can act is before the Pirates take hold of the ship after that its to much of a risk to the Crew (of the held ship)

Im not saying THAT particular ship but that after the initial incident the US navy would have a reason to get involved in the area to prevent further acts of piracy. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Fair point that the metaphors are getting a bit mixed.
There seems to be a lot of 'Yay US guys good, Somali guys bad' in this thread when the reality of resource depletion and consumption not to mention armed forces capturing natural resources leaves room for many shades of gray.

Moral relativism.
If the banks, making colossally bad decisions I had no part of, caused me to lose all my money would it then be ok if I robbed your house or took your family hostage? Afterall, I have nothing, you have something, therefore it is right and just that I take some of your stuff yes?
Maybe they should apply their efforts to sorting out their own country. There has not been anything much resembling a government there in 18 years or more. So yeah, no surprise their lot in life sucks. Still does not make it ok to go hijack ships.
Additionally, while it is probably just some schmoes doing the actual attacking of the ships, I am willing to bet it is some warlord-type living in comfort who is bankrolling the thing and reaping the lion's share of the profits from these events. I doubt the poor, downtrodden guy is all of a sudden just hanging out as a newly minted millionaire in his village.
And FTR I would be saying, "Yay German/Dutch/Iranian/Chinese/Etc. guys good, Somali guys bad" if it were some other crew that did the same thing.

TIA= This Is Africa
I'm saying yay a ship held off an attack. This has nothing to do with resource depletion or Military resource capture, this is the people of Somalia spreading their way of life outside of their national waters. Those men who actually captured the cargo ship, they won't see a tenth of the millions that a country (or the company of the ship) gives. Its used to buy illegal contraband to fuel the never ending war in Africa.
They enslave their own. They **** and kill those who oppose them. They kidnap children and turn them into little killing machines. They remove your arm if you vote against them. Governments rise and fall in the same year. AIDs runs rampant and we buy diamonds soaked in blood.
This Is Africa.

Where the heck is Blackwater when you need them?? I don't understand why more ships in that area aren't protected with armed guards. Surely its less expensive to hire mercs than payout those millions in ransom and loose all the time and goods involved.

One of the ships which was hijacked has pmc's (not sure if they were blackwater or what) onboard but due to some stupid law they didnt have firearms and used the ships water cannon to fend off the pirates before jumping ship when they finally boarded

I know someone who works the same area as Blackwater and there are new H&S maritine laws coming into effect that will require ships to have a comprehensive strategy for dealing with highjackings. This includes protection and I wouldn't be surpised if that ship had been carrying a few close protection staff for this eventuality.
