There can only be so many pirates out there. This looks like an excellent tactic.
1. Send valuable ship through dangerous waters in daylight at low speed without obvious protection. 2. Allow pirates to board. 3. Having deliberately filled the cargo hold with board, testosterone high specialist troops the trap is sprung with piracy being captured or killed
repeat the above a dozen times or so and there will be no pirates left.
anyway I don't understand why convoys are not being scheduled for cargo ships. so what it would increased shipping times by a day.

To everyone that's arguing about piracy and what it's like and using pretty analogies to try and explain yourself: Stop. The fact of the matter is you probably don't know what it's like. And frankly neither do I. But I'd be willing to bet my life that there are no moral absolutes when you're starving.

Quote: International naval forces from several countries, including the U.S. Navy, are sending vessels to the scene. According to one source, the pirates are essentially "all alone, more then 300 miles out to sea, and warships from several countries are on the way."
I love this quote from the linked article. Surely, if you were one of the pirates hearing the news of incoming warships all you'd be thinking, is *@%$! Well played to the MA's crew for fighting back, hope they get their captain returned safely.
With all the worlds great naval battleships, how come noone's firing any torps at these pirates anyways? -------------

Probably be more appropriate to feel sorry for them if they sent the SBS in. They are the ones that deal with these kind of situations and more often than not its the SAS who get the credit for their work.

have a satellite obit earth and stay above the ocean, and keep track of any ship that it in that area.
If there is a ship that isn't supposed to be there (not a logged trader/rich guy ship and too far out from the coast to be a random fishing boat) then send in an armed ship to sort them out. ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari |

Seriously? You really don't know why?
Hmm... lemme think this one thru...
1. torps are fired from submarines, torpedo boats, and torpedo heli's 1. a. Pirates can't see nor board subs 1. b. pirates can see torpedo boats, if there were any deployed that is. 1. c. pirates can see torpedo heli's, but cannot fly 2. torps are fast but slow to maneuver 3. torps would have a very hard time even coming close to hitting a skiff. 3. a. pirate skiffs are not slow turning / slow moving targets that a torp can easily track 3. b. torps run at drafts deeper than the pirate skiffs. 4. torps are way too expensive to waste on killing a skiff.

Why don't our navies in the area just sink the pirate ships? Shouldn't be too hard to blow their boats out of the water.
And look at that, problem solved.

Like when we (The British) sank that Argentine 'fishing' boat that was spying on our fleet during the Falklands War? They tried to kick up a fuss about it but nothing really happened.

SBS would make more sense if you wanted to destroy the ship or assault pirate vessels but the SAS are much better suited for hostage extraction and CRW. -

They are? You do realise that the SAS training is part of the SBS training? They are fully capable of carrying out counter-terrorism work which requires specialist training when dealing with ships that the SAS lack. Again the only reason you don't hear about it is because the SAS get the credit and the SBS are quite content not tbe in the spotlight.
Read 'First into action' by former member of the SBS Dulcan Falconer. Its an amazing insight into both the world of the SBS but also that of professional soldiers. That the SBS recruit primarily from the Royal Marines is testement to their calibre. If you want to lazy and forive my similarly lazy research you can look on SBS] for some background information that actually specifically mentions counterterrorism as one of their roles.

In any case, I doubt a man from either regiment would care. They go to sleep knowing they're double-hard bast**ds, kill 20 other men when they wake up before even brushing their teeth. Which they do with sandpaper. And if you ever caught an SBS guy in the spotlight, chances are you'll be dead soon after. -------------

Im not saying THAT particular ship but that after the initial incident the US navy would have a reason to get involved in the area to prevent further acts of piracy.
The US Navy is ALREADY involved in the area on an anti-piracy mission, and has been for some time. That is the whole reason the USS Bainbridge was in the area in the first place.

There are a LOT of small boats in that area. The pirates don't fly skull and crossbone flags or anything like that, so it is pretty much impossible to tell who are pirates and who are not. The naval ships in the area routinely board and search small boats in the area looking for pirates. Then the pirates are taken into custody.

Today they nabbed their first American flagged ship (owned by a Dutch company) with 20 American sailors aboard (not sure if that was the whole crew). The Maersk Alabama was carrying emergency relief to Kenya.
Just a little correction its not "owned by a Dutch company" its owned by Mµrsk which is a Danish company..

Quote: After requesting assistance from other vessels in the area, Greek, Spanish, Dutch and United States warships all joined the chase. A Spanish marine aircraft and two US Marine Cobra helicopters were also involved.
