I actually like the newer effects over the old ones. I guess it is true though based upon some of these posts that most people just don't like change.

Just your opinion (thank god).
Turn off your ccp fanboi-ism and face the REAL facts: Some of the new effects just suck compared to the old ones.
Cyno's being a prime example along with hybrid weapons and artillery effects. I like most of the new effects, but there are several in which I wish they never changed them, or if they did change them they just modified the old ones with new graphical effects.
If I had an Alt I would probably post with it... |

i miss the ole warp disruptor and the ole cap transfer but in general (and mostly due to the unimpressive weapon effects now) the future meme will be "eve has effects?!?!" - putting the gist back into logistics |

The new webbing effect is neat, you can see it distort space around the target. The sensor booster effect however is crap and it's distracting and annoying, I prefer the old pulsing rings. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

Those things you quoted as 'REAL facts'? Those were opinions. Not facts.
A fact would be to say that not everyone is happy with the new effect. An opinion, would be to say that the new effects 'suck'.
Just a little FYI, is all.

The sensor booster effect is over the top.
The web effect sucks because it looks exactly the same as a wormhole.
The blaster effects suck because they made an amazingly good one that they didn't use in the end, but the one they do use at the moment is still better then the old one I think.
Armor repair effect is fine.
if you disagree with me then you should probably post a response and stop reading my signature. |

The affects were not broken before, no one was complaining about the affects before... So why the need to touch them???
Why not fix something useful? Fix something every one wants fixedą IĘm sure theirs lots of other things to screw up.
I mean the new cyno affect is awful, the new sensor boosting affect is awful and the jump gate has 2 affects which is pointlessą and awful. - On top of that they are all boring.
As for the other affects, yes they suck, but itĘs late and I really canĘt be bothered to go into the lameness. All I know is the cyno, sensor booster and gate affects are the most irritating out of the above mentioned.

Edited by: mechtech on 12/04/2009 01:35:17 I think the new effects just generally need a 2nd pass. Some are a bit too subtle, such as web, warping, and warp disruption.
They had amazing effects shown at last Fanfest. the GPU was used to dynamically process effects, so nos for example would pull gobs of energy from the actually hull of the ship. Maybe it was too computationally intensive or something, but I think effects like that should exist on the extreme settings, what are we going to use our 4870x2s for?

I kind of agree with the OP. Effects were at the top of my list for Apocrypha, but it turned out to be such a huge pile of crap.
I would understand if they can't live up to my wild imagination for performance scaling reasons but they should at least be some sort of upgrade. It really sucks, but that feeling has only amplified since March.

youre kidding me right? the only thing that needs fixing is the blaster effect... i dont think they did anything to it.

I would very much like it if they modified the new cyno effect to have the same shape and movement of the old one (a cone that would turn as the ship jumped in) with threads of actual silver and perhaps violet (or blue, or green, or something) outlining the outer edge of the cone (like the lines used to define the old cyno).
Also it would be very nice if the stargate effect got changed as well. The new effect would be great for showing a bolt of something distorting the light bursting away from the gate in a flickering beam (flicks on/off once, perhaps a fifth or a third of a second long?) with some visible light bleed as it fades away. To go with that, as the ship disappears, its 'bubble' distorts and sucks towards the gate, disappearing just before the gate beams away...
Got to do something with the video cards we have now instead of just a spherical "whoomph suck and the ship is gone/appears" thing. :)

I look at effects as serving 3 purposes:
#1 communicate gameplay #2 communicate sense of motion (ship effects) #3 add drama, realism, and coolness to an event
In many cases the new effects suite bungles #1. Webbing, repping, warp scrambling, cloaking, shield boosting... important information all so subtle you can barely tell they're happening.
On #2, the removal of ship trails (!!), and almost no sense of speed or acceleration/decelleration in warp effects have really detracted from the experience.
On #3, events of incredible drama like cyno fields and warping the ship have been reduced to shadows of their former selves. Some effects like sensor boosting have lost contextual meaning.
So much opportunity to improve.

The new sensor booster is hilarious, the bubbly gate jump effect makes no sense, (and no, they should not remove the gate animation, they should remove the freaking bubble, i never seen such stupidity not even the worst sci-fi movies), stop inserting bling bling into the game CCP keep the things that work and make sense and fix the ones they don't.

The NEW sensor booster effect is terrible, I want the one that was VERY subtle. - old armor repair effect was better than the new one? New armor repair effcet is much cooler then some green cloud. - old stasis webifier effect was better than the new one? New one if MUCH better! - and maybe that old blasters effect was better than the new one? Agreed! Large Ion Blaster pre-apoc = win!

This. Especially the webbing effect, it used to look pretty obvious (hey, a web webs) but now it's a shiny little wormhole which can barely be seen and makes no sense. And overall I preferred the old effects, although I don't pay much attention to them anyway. Just enough to see clearly what's going on, so the effects need to be practical and not for eye candy only.

i wished that webs would use the "static electricity" of old cyno-jumps to portray an actual webs effect...something like a combo of the current shield booster and nos effects but make them green maybe :P ================================================
