Ok, I started this game at 2006, I have had many pvp characters from all four races (I wanted to see all of them) and miner/trader alts. I have been three years in 0.0 and some in factional warfare.
Never I have been pirate and I understand that -10.0 makes you a target. I have hunted pirates in NRDS alliances and tbh that's atleast the thing what I don't want to do anymore.
But what makes the pirating fun? Is it just the freedom of politics? No sitting in dread or bs and shooting POS for 2 hours?
I know that most pirate corps and pirates have hauler/trader alt or mission alt ferry ships and making ISK for pvp ships, and I would have one for me too.
Hows pirate life?
I am asking this because right now I am sitting in my Golem, doing missions after leaving the region where I have been for three years. I am nearly in capital ships (month or so) and after that I am sure that 0.0 alliances would want me. It's obvious, dread pilots are needed. But I know the downsides of being in 0.0 alliances, mainly about the politics and spygame. Of course the great thing in 0.0 alliances is the massive fights. I remember those big fights between RA and FDN. And -V-/FIX vs FDN, absolutely great!
So, I might even sell all my empire assets and fit nice ship and go blow **** up in lowsec
But before I screw everything up, I would like to hear from pirates hows is it and then think what to do in this game in future.
Thanks for advance.

"Is it just the freedom of politics?"
Not just, but this has alot to do with why I don't conform.
Mining = very boring.
Ratting = boring. Unless its to get sec status back up, then its almost as bad as mining.
Missions = boring. Quit this as soon as I had enough collaberation to get jc's and search agents to find prey.
Being a pirate, I have the friends and entertainment to be able to log in whenever I please to do whatever I want (generally speaking)
I don't have to listen to a "mandatory corp/alliance mining op email" or a "don't shoot this person cause he is blue message" - even if I hate them? F THAT. Pirating to me is freedom.

Do you like to mine roids, NPCs or rtards? I've done it all and personally I found mining rtards to be the most tolerable thing in this game. So that's why I'm sticking with piracy.

The thing I like most about piracy is roaming around with a few friends, usually in some combination of frgates, T2 frigates, and cruisers, shooting the breeze, and scouting around with directional scanner/probes looking for bigger ships, BSs any time we can find 'em, to blow up or ransom.
And yeah, we've got freedom! We hunt where we like, when we like, for as long as we like.
Good times!

Having very recently turned flashy, I would say whether or not you enjoy it depends on how you like to play the game.
If you want to just stroll around safely, only fighting when you know you can win or easily withdraw, don't bother. Everyone who thinks he can take you will open up on you, every time you jump through a gate you could be walking into a fight to the death. Being in a two man corp a lot of the time I'm on my own and have to take on whatever is thrown at me. No more sitting around oustside stations or gates, knowing the sentries are watching over you. Theres a bullseye painted on the side of your ship, and you have to be ready to fight at a moments notice as soon as you undock.
I love it

Yo HO HO HO A 3.14rats life for me!
Freedom to do what you want, when you want, can even kill your ceo if your feeling ballsy ( or had a bit too much to drink )
Freedom is the name of the game, just cuz im -10 doesnt mean i have to stay outta hi sec, just gotta be quick about, savvy ;p
Also its a little known fact but all blinky people get free beer at NPC station bars, all you can drink mofo!
Ladies! Will you please shut it? Listen to me. Yes, I lied to you. No, I don't love you. Of course it makes you look fat. I've never been to Brussels. It is pronounced "egregious". By the way, no, I've never met Pizzaro but I love his pies. And all of this pales to utter insignificance in light of the fact that my ship is once again gone. Savvy?

Well, pirating is probably the best way to make isk pvp wise because there isn't much risk in it, but it's pretty slow compared to 0.0, just think of pirating as a mix of small gang pvp in 0.0 and carebearing, depends on your playstyle though to make it profitable or not, a lot depends on how ballsy/experienced you are, It's allways worth trying it out but it isn't the most fun you can get in eve, but it's a great balance of isk making / fun, depends what your priorities are

Quite the opposite, actually. Carebears and "antipirates" will run straight away, unless they massively outnumber you (not just outgun - in that case they still run). Other "pirates", especially the kind that thinks gatecamping is skilled piracy, will often think twice before engaging a -10, 2006 character. While a 5.0, 2006 character caught in a BS, gets no mercy even from players with half his age.
So basically, the problem is not that it makes you a target. It makes you a target for the ones that are probably so confident and skilled that can kill you. But these are the best fights.

It's freedom. It's pride. I've gone into some systems with a small gang and the system clears out. That's awsome. OFC, I've seen ONE -10 Pirate enter a system and even I cleared out..... Some people you just don't want to mess with....
Anyway, I enjoy it. I roam solo alot, and unfourtunately loose alot still. But who cares?!! It was fun, and I don't have to worry about taking a sec hit. It's also great when you're red and flashy to scram a somewhat noob and have him just inject money into your wallet, then convo you and beg to be let go LOL. Doesn't happen often tho. Down sides?? I've been podded more times for a bounty than I care to admit.

for ****s'n giggles.
tbh, I have been pirating since the sixth month of playing EVE, and have never looked back.
the best thing for me about it is going into the unexpected fights, you never know what is waiting for you around the next corner, or who will decide to roll through your area next, or who's alt you actually just 'relieved' of the heavy modules they are moving or have fitted.
it's just fun and is to an extent unpredictable as well.

And yet they don't realise their precious carebear tritanium price goes up everyone a ship goes pop by pirates, followed by a deep, low pitched- Yarrr - motherf*****
sometimes the ammount of targets you find can get a bit depressing though. But then you have a good day and find a hulk in a gravi site or whatnot, and you're happy again. If yer going to .0 anyway, nothing to loose with an alt for logistics.
go 4 it dude

Edited by: Versipellis on 15/04/2009 12:27:59 i think first of all you have to be prepared to "lose" before becoming a pirate.. at least in the beginning.. well usually earning much brings the risk of losing some..well that's the thing they call risk.. if you love it go for it.. but i still prefer being a carebear in most of the time and keep on hating pirates that are too coward to come 1 on 1.. other then that i search my own risk factor via interregional and low-sex hauling..
well u gotta admit that lowsec (even hisec) haulers gotta stand against serious risks and heartstabbing' stress for ISK.. :)
being flashy is a PERFECT intimidation for majority of eve players i'll give you that.. but when i bump into a gatecamp or a HAC pirate i get flashy too.. like this-->
edit: "low-sex"? wtf lol..i won't change it..me likie..

Piracy isn't for everyone. Plenty of pilots walk away from piracy, taking up careers in industry or nullsec. It all depends on what makes EVE fun for you.
What kind of combat do you like? Pirates in my corp describe nullsec PVP as being a nameless cog in the machine: jump now, wait here, guard that gate, shoot this POS, shut up, primary that ship. You managed to target a ship and tag it in time to get on the killmail? Lucky day! And dying is just a matter of whether or not you or the ship next to you got selected by the enemy FC; nothing you can do will save your ship--not sp, not setup, nothing--if you get primaried by a fleet of 100 battleships. Lowsec pirate combat, on the other hand, is often solo or small gang; roam, hunt, scan, and probe for targets--and hope it's not a trap. You influence your destiny in many ways--the intel you gather, the tactics you use, your setup, your skills, heat, boosters, etc. Of course, this may not be an entirely fair comparison, but there's truth to it.

Everytime you fight someone, once you are hitting them press CTRL + Q for a massive speed boost. Take advantage of this that you simultaneously press the default Orbit button at the top right (or if you moved the shortcut box...) and the CTRL + Q buttons.

This, tbh.
Lowsec piracy (and small gang combat in general, really) seems way more involved than boring fleet or POS stuff.
And as you said, OP, the absence of politics and blues greatly appeals to many people.
Also, most of the pirate corps I've dealt with are very laid back - mercs, 0.0 alliances and other srs business corps are way too rigid for my tastes. I play eve for fun, not as a second job.
