Edited by: Teamosil on 15/04/2009 02:45:39 As I understand it, for a ship ransom price to be viable it needs to be lower than the cost of replacing the ship, buying new insurance, and replacing it's modules minus the insurance payout, and it needs to be higher than the value of the loot the pirate would get from blowing up the ship. If it's over the price of replacing the ship, the victim won't pay and if it's under the value of the loot, the pirate wouldn't offer it. Right?
For example, if I'm flying around in a cyclone, the cost of replacing it after insurance is about $25m and the loot would be worth about $10m. So the range where a deal could potentially be struck would be $10m to $25m. Probably at the lower end if the victim has no reason to trust that the pirate will honor it and probably at the higher end if they do. Anything outside of that range would be a losing proposition for one party or the other and would be rejected.
But in actuality it seems like people consistently ask for a ransom somewhere between 2 and 10 times the cost of replacing the ship... Which is why nobody ever pays ransoms... Am I missing something? Is ransom just being used as a means to sucker nubs with bad math skills? Or do pirates figure every ship is loaded up with t2 rigs or something?
Pod ransom is a different animal because you have no idea what implants the person has or how much of a pita it will be for them to be sent back to wherever their clone is. So that ends up just being some kind of guessing game based on how old the player is and whatnot, but I imagine that most times the pod is worth less to the player than the ship. People with expensive implants typically don't wear them in situations where they might get blown up.

Every ransom conversation I've had so far has gone something like this:
Pirate> Give me $100m and we won't pod you Me> Um, my implants are only worth $3m.. Maybe I'd pay something for keeping my ship Pirate> Ok, $150m and we let your cyclone go Me> How about $15m? *I get podded* *pirate flies away with $10m in loot wondering why he didn't take the $15m*
