Title says it ^ I'm looking to get into mining and I've read all of the complete mining guide but it didn't list much detail on how to find a good spot so I was just wondering if anyone had some steps I could follow or tips that would be useful.
Thanks

Go away from the central spots. Plenty of ore, plenty of places. Just not 5jumps next to a tradehub. --------------------------------------

Open up the map (F10) and then set it to show the number of pilots in the last 30 minutes. Look for any systems near to the the tradehub that have had around five people there is the last 30 minutes, check it for belts and then head over there. Typically the quiet systems are relatively free of can flippers so you can just get on with some jet can mining.
There will likely be a few mining barges there but I've never had anyone complain when I've jumped into the same belt as them and started mining. Just show a bit of respect and don't mine the same roids they are. ----

Find a quiet, backwater system with only 1-2 jumpgates and not too many agents.
Check the map stats for low numbers of pilots docked and active and pilots in system.
The drawback -- hauling the minerals to a busier, more accessible place to sell them for better prices than you can get in a limited-access, backwater system.

Edited by: Viscountess VonBismarck on 16/04/2009 13:25:31 Assuming that you're looking to stay in high sec, I'd suggest regions that are generally pretty empty such as Khanid, Devoid, or Molden Heath. Plenty of good ore, though it can be a PITA to haul. You could also start exploring and look for gravimetric sites.

Firstly, you'll make more money out of mining veldspar.
Secondly, use the statistical views in the map. Pilots in system\sec status\ships destroyed etc --
If there's no profit to be made you need to travel further afield.

Deadend systems 4-5 jumps from trade routes/market hubs.
Ombeve.UK
Ombey's 2D maps are excellent for planning mining expeditions. I print off the regions around my home base area and peruse them for systems with lots of belts and off the beaten path.

Edited by: Joshua Lonestar on 16/04/2009 14:48:10 My experience....Fly your ass out and start looking. The maps can give you an idea where to start however. I've been in those backwater systems and found more miners then rocks, and I've been in major mission hubs and can undock late in the afternoon and still find dense veld in the belts.
Best thing is to get a frigate or other nimble ship (So you dont spend forever aligning for warp), pick your ideal home system and fly out there and in late afternoon early evening start checking the belts. If they are pretty scarce by then you might be better served to start looking at systems outside of the one your in. Start 1 jump out, then 2 etc.
When I say early evening, I mean well past the downtime. A lot of people rush out right after downtime to mine out the veld so if you can find a nice system with a few belts in it that still has higher end veldspar (Dense/concentrated) at 12+ hours past downtime theres a good chance your in a good system to mine.
The balance of course is in finding a system that isnt in daily strip mine mode and is still on the beaten path so you get good market exposure. Obviously mining all the vled in the world does you little good if you cant move it. The more accessible the higher your sell price can be. People pay a premium for convenience, thats an important point to keep in mind when your looking for a new home.
And actually, I just moved to a new home last night, so I feel your pain in finding the "perfect spot".
ETA: I run 2 accounts, miner and hauler. Can flippers arent something I concern myself with.

Get a fast ship and explore!
I use a Caldari Condor with afterburner (very agile ship, and 1011 m/s currently), and bookmark a LOT.
Look for systems with rocks, and 10 or fewer people in local (my home system typically maxes at 3).
Then grind standing for the corp that owns the nearest station, to avoid refining tax.

team up with a mission runner ,preferably a corp mate.
ask them what mission they are running or ask them to scout any ore in there mission deadspace pocket.
warp to friend. start mining. easy source of ore near trade/mission hubs.
even if your friend turns in the mission, as long as someone stays in the deadspace pocket the ore will stay there.
this might be a good time to invest in a hauling alt.

Missions.
Not near trade hubs.
Not in Caldari space.
Backwater low sec.

If you have a hauler at hand (alt or buddy), systems with >15 belts and no NPC station may also be a good choise. There should be a NPC station in a neighbouring system where your hauler can drop off the ore.
I often use such systems and 1 hauler (~30-35k m¦) can easily support 2 fully fitted hulks. -------------------

mission mining, can give you alot of mineral. jeg do a mixture of lvl2-3 missions. they tend to have alot of minerals as background stuff. can mine this. the chance of being hit by a thief is close to nill _____________________________________________ yawnnnnn |

Looks like most of the answers here are good ones, I just wanna say i'm impressed that you asked "how to find good place to mine" rather than the usual "where do i mine"

Basically I do a combination of what many people have said. I use Ombey's 2d maps to scout out likely systems... dead end .5 to .7 sec status and then will check the contents on the Ore map previously mentioned. Then I either scout it with a fast ship or since I do alot of trading/hauling if I am near the system I hop over and check it in my hauler. Also when passing through a system on trade runs if when I check local and it is less then 3 people in it I will check the belts.

You can also scan out grav sites with Core Scanner Probes and mine them. They will normally be higher quality ore than you would find in that sec level.
Before exploration came out I only mined roids in missions... much less ore theft and can flipping and other annoyances, because rather than scanning me down they can just find plenty of victims in the belts.

Plenty of rocks to mine in "Mordus Folly", "Infiltrated Outposts", "Attack of the Drones", "Break Their Will", and a couple of other missions.
Find mission running friends, get them to let you into their veldspar-rich mining sites, profit.
