One of my alts is an ore thief named Big doggy. That's right. Well, I had an interesting encounter recently. I saw these guys and stole their ore. They got very angry and I learned a few new 4 letter words. Big deal, so what.
But then: [ 2004.08.25 21:08:24 ] wr'ithe > ur time will come [ 2004.08.25 21:08:39 ] Big doggy > when? or is this more talk? smack talker corp [ 2004.08.25 21:08:51 ] WhiteKnightAngel > hell sod the game big doggy. ive got your pc's IP address. hope you got good internet security lol [ 2004.08.25 21:10:31 ] Solin Rossi > he's in 5-1 [ 2004.08.25 21:12:59 ] Big doggy > /emote Yawns [ 2004.08.25 21:13:02 ] WhiteKnightAngel > im being serious Big doggy. i would buy some good anti-hack software if i were you [ 2004.08.25 21:14:13 ] WhiteKnightAngel > hahahaha. you actually think im joking [ 2004.08.25 21:14:31 ] Big doggy > well how would you do that? [ 2004.08.25 21:15:13 ] WhiteKnightAngel > do you have any idea of base system programming being used to travel via a secure external carrier wave? [ 2004.08.25 21:15:23 ] Big doggy > nope not a clue [ 2004.08.25 21:15:55 ] WhiteKnightAngel > then i would learn quickly. its how people hack. as i said. buy some really good software [ 2004.08.25 21:16:00 ] Big doggy > I wouldnt even know where to start [ 2004.08.25 21:16:11 ] Solin Rossi > go white go [ 2004.08.25 21:16:23 ] Johnny Disco > lol [ 2004.08.25 21:16:23 ] Big doggy > like what would the first step to hacking me be? [ 2004.08.25 21:16:30 ] Fabiusbile > :) [ 2004.08.25 21:17:16 ] Solin Rossi > white do u want me to send a little present to his ip addy? [ 2004.08.25 21:17:24 ] WhiteKnightAngel > tell you what Big doggy. once ive accessed your pc ill leave behind a copy of norton anti virus for your future use [ 2004.08.25 21:17:24 ] Fabiusbile > like missile up your ass :) [ 2004.08.25 21:17:24 ] Big doggy > well if you can't even tell me the first step, I doubt your truthfulness
So much to my great surprize a little while later my Anti-virus software alerts me "Trojan dectected and cleaned". Right after I get a message saying HAHAHAHAH from the above named person.
I sent a petition in and it's been a while, nothing. I guess they take like a week to get back to you now. I called CCP and the guy who answers the phone just said "keep your anti-virus software up to date". HUH?
What I want to know is, and CCP was not able to answer me on, was this just the biggest coincedance in the history of the world or can someone actually get your IP address when you are playing the game? That seems strange to me, but then so many people today are SO DAMN SMART I'll believe just about anything. And these folks do seem very smart. But is this possible?
For your info, I have an updated windows xp, with a router firewall, software firewall and anti-virus software, all updated everytime I log on. I have wired only, no WIFI. And I don't use ANYTHING else on this pc, no IE, no MIRC, no ICQ, no MSN messanger, no files downloaded, NOTHING. It's 100% dedicated just to this game. My other pc's are on a different network all together. And lastly my IP addy changes daily, randomly. ANYONE HAVE AN IDEA WHAT HAPPENED TO ME? I'd really like to know. And obviously CCP doesn't care at all if their game is so insecure this could happen. Thanks. Oh and sure go ahead and laugh, but you might |

Me thinks you are some alt that wants to scare the ore thiefs. This is why.
You are connected to the server. I cannot imagine a single instance in game where you would be directly connected to another player. Therefore, there is no way for another player to find your computer's ip address. Ever! It' just cannot be done.
The game works by you submitting changes to a vast database on the server, and other players reding those changes. There is no need nor is there any connection between two players.
Conclusion: this is just talk to scare off ore thiefs.

now I'm no hacker, and network stuff is not my forte, but I am pretty familiar with computers, and this sounds far more like star trek techno babble than any real computer jargon.
my bet is a big coincidence, possibly encouraged by maybe not having run a virus scanner til getting slightly spooked?
as was said theres not really any conceivable way they could get your IP through the game, static or not.
my bet is that its not that they don't care because its not secure enough, and allows it to happen... but that it IS secure enough, and they were essentially BS'ing you.

OK, i'm feeling evil here. now I'm not the greatest guy to talk to about direct TCP/IP/UDP connections, or even know how we connect to Eve. what I am is a programmer of nearly 15 years experience, and I'd just like to to take this statement apart, piece by piece.
*c racks knuckles*
let's take the first part. "base system programming" - google search reveals absolutely feck all, unless you want to talk about "In-System Programming with 8051-Based Microcontrollers", or "C# Programming: Namespaces and the Base Classes Part 1 - Introduction". taking the phrase apart piece by piece also fails to illuminate us with any particular information.... what "base" are we talking about? we could be thinking in terms of machine code, as that is that "base" of all "system programming", but it just doesn't feel right.
technical content score - 3% (1 for each word)
second phrase. "secure external carrier wave" - this one's interesting, as it implies a non-physical approach, and for this to work, said haxxor would have to find out specific location of said haxxee, which, even if he could find out and IP address and tie that to a physical location, would be highly illegal, and probably extremely difficult for people without CIA/MI5 connections. Still, lets elaborate. fair enough, a google search lists some nice links to wifi security sites and articles. the problem comes with putting the words together... if you're ghosting onto someone's network, then its not secure is it?
technical content score 14% (4% for words, 10% for the google)
The phrase "being used to travel" is a good one as well... how can our l33t haxxor use "base system programming" "to travel via" our ghosted wifi connection (if thats even what he meant).... you can't use a programming method to communicate via a connection... the programming defines the structure of the communication, not the media.
technical content score 1%
overall technical content 4% + 14% * 1% = 4.14% from a technical point of view..... shabby to say the least.
