Okay, so I'm new to the whole exploration business. But I decided to try it out anyway, if only to get better at probing.
Anyway, I was flying around lowsec looking for some interesting Cosmic Signatures. Finding one, I began zeroing in on it. It didn't take me long to narrow it down to a .5 AU area, but even though I knew its position to a few hundredths of an AU, I could only get it to 45%. All this showed me was that it was Magnetometric. I spent more than an hour trying to zero in on it, using seven probes all set at their closest setting, but could not get any more accurate than 45%.
So is there such thing as an unscannable site? And if not, what would it take to scan this one? For the record, my scanning skills are decent (3 or 4 on all of them), I was in a Cov Ops (Cov Ops skill 4) and was using combat probes.

Read this http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Apocrypha_probing
Only the best 4 probes count, so using 7 is a waste
Use Core Probes
Be aware that if you don't have sufficient scan strength, you simply can't scan down really weak sites, so get more strenth (ie, rig your ship, get sisters gear, get implants, improve your skills)

Okay, thanks Bel. I thought I read somewhere that Combat Probes always have better scan strength than Cores, but I could have just imagined that. Also, I was using 7 probes because I figured it couldn't hurt.

5 probes are better, they will alow a patern looking like this up x x X x verticaly x down this will insure that you see everything around the hit X moving the probes in this patern will insure that you always have atleast one probe will hit the target _____________________________________________ yawnnnnn |

Check you scan str. of your probes Show info at your ship, Modules, scroll down to your probes do show info on them.
With a Probe scan str below 100, there are a some sites you can't find, doesnt matter how you position your probes.
Then you need to improve your Scan str. Core probes instead Combat, Maybe Sister Core probes Sister Launcher Scan rigs. Skill covert ops Skill Astrometrics Rangefinding

Originally by: Raven Lenore Okay, thanks Bel. I thought I read somewhere that Combat Probes always have better scan strength than Cores, but I could have just imagined that.
You were likely thinking of deep space probes, which, until the first minor patch after Apoc was released, had a stronger scan strength than other probes at any given distance.
Core probes and Combat probes however have the same strength at any given distance. The difference is that core probes can go to 0.25 AU instead of the 0.5 AU minimum of Combat probes. At 0.25 AU it's now twice as strong as a combat probe.
The advantage of a combat probe is that it will scan down sites /and/ ships, which makes it more versatile if you don't need the extra strength.
Personally I mostly use combat probes and only pull out core probes for the rare times I can't get enough strength at 0.5 AU

Depends on your definition of hurt. If you're placing probes randomly, then yes, 7 probes is better than 4, because you'll get the best 4 results. The thing is that 4 well placed probes will get you better results than scattershotting 7 probes, as you can place them to maximise your result. Using 7 probes will make you less likely to work out how to place 4 probes well, hurting you in the end

Other than people have allready said - your skills /equip might still be too low.
A corpmate had a empire site he coould hardly nail with 4/5 skills and sisters probes / launcher.

Edited by: Kva Plexcha on 20/04/2009 12:44:39 Edited by: Kva Plexcha on 20/04/2009 12:43:12 Well my current skills:
Astrometrics Rangefinding,Pinpointing, and Acquisition all at lvl 3, Astrometrics at lvl 4 Covert Ops at lvl 4
I use a Sisters Expanded Launcher, with Sisters Core Probes
Only needed 4 probes to scan down any sig to date, this includes 8/10 and 9/10 sites in 0.0 I use the planar cross formation for scanning always
Dont use more than 4 probes - the comp only picks the 4 best anyways - always evenly space your probes around the target, horizontally and vertically
Even with regular core probes I have no issues Your skills are fine, just need better placement and practice.
If you get a situation where you are at .25 au strength and still dont have a 100% warpable result, check the placement of the probes around the target. Adjust the probes so they are as close and as evenly spaced around the target as possible. I can't stress how important I have found the even spacing is in getting good results. This is what I have noticed for myself, not sure abou other explorers.
Hmm after re-reading your post I also have 2x Grav Capacitor rigs on my Covert ops. This helps also. Do you have these? I have no prospector implants, either.
