One of the many doomsday scenarios we are told about has become a little bit more likely today. The World Health Organisation are very concerned with this outbreak.
But there are some good signs that it may not be too deadly. However worst effected are the young and healthy.

Interesting fact: The "Spanish Flu Pandemic" of 1918 killed far more people than both World Wars combined. Estimated to be anywhere from 20 million to 100 million fatalities.

The potential is there, but not likely. I had the swine flu a few years back from working with a few thousand pigs each day, some antibiotics and I was just fine. This is really no more a "Black Plague" as the Bird Flu was when it was first diagnosed in China. Its there, has always been there and will always be there. A person is much more likely to die from having an airplane crash on top of their heads if they have access to any kind of decent medical treatment.

Why is it a lot of people still think antibiotics are a weapon against viruses?
A virus cannot be tackled with antibiotics, only bacterial infections can be treated, such as the 'plague' the only thing we have to fight viruses are a few very specific anti-viral drugs and our own immune system.
If the swine-flu outbreak does take off, it could be another SARS.
/me stocks up on non-perishables and water... oh wait, I already did this for the coming zombie apocalypse (otherwise called a financial meltdown).

Jeez, my apoligies Fat Freddy!!!! Type the wrong thing in and get flamed...wow!! And YES, I did have it..was sick for nearly 2 weeks. It is nasty, but not that bad. And as for SARS, hmmm, yeah. Thats a worldwide epidemic and millions are dying from it.

Sorry Trokiel, it wasn't a flame. Just that many people demand antibiotics when they get the sniffles, a lot of doctors will hand them out like candy and as a result of this there are more and more bacteria that are resistant, MRSA for one.
Yep swine flu is real nasty, glad you recovered. The antibiotics may have been prescribed in case there were any secondary infections while your immune system was flattened fighting the virus.
As for SARS... it is rare, very rare, remember the panic in 2003 when Toronto had an outbreak?
Influenza is a killer, I really hope this Mexico thing gets contained quickly.

Apparently tha cases in the US has doubled. When i went to bed last night there was 11 cases, this morning I look at the news and there is now 20 cases.
WASHINGTON û The U.S. declared a public health emergency Sunday to deal with the emerging new swine flu.
Officials reported 20 U.S. cases of swine flu in five states so far. In Mexico the same strain appears to be killing dozens of people.
12 million doses of the drug Tamiflu will be moved from a federal stockpile to places where states can quickly get their share. Priority will be given to the five states with known cases so far: California, Texas, New York, Ohio and Kansas.

Its easy to get Madagascar if you keep empty symptoms you know. You don't have to have people coughing to spread the disease - just makes it easier.
Admittedly playing this way takes a while. but once you're into madagascar, drop all the symptoms and afflictions at once and bam, its like explosive decompression all around.
Also, Confirming that I have been playing plenty of L4D recently to prepare.

From an internal email within Roche Pharma (The owner of Tamiflu):
Quote: As you may be aware, an outbreak of swine influenza (or swine flu) has occurred in Mexico and the U.S.A. The virus responsible appears to be a novel influenza A (H1N1) virus strain composed of gene segments of influenza viruses from swine, avian and human. It is the first time this quadruple genetic combination has been recognised in swine influenza A (H1N1) in the US and worldwide.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that the virus is sensitive to the two neuraminidase inhibitors Tamiflu (Roche) and Relenza (GSK), but not to the two older influenza antivirals of the M2 inhibitor class (amantidine and rimantidine).
...the Mexican and U.S. Governments have Tamiflu supplies available to assist in the management of this situation. Roche also holds significant global inventories of Tamiflu.
So the epidemic is being caused by a previously unseen chimera virus resistant to all but two antivirals distributed by two of the largest multinationals in the world, who conveniently possess stockpiles of the drug in strategic locations around the globe.
This definitely bears no similarity to the plot of any second-rate spy thriller.

This definitely bears no similarity to the plot of any second-rate spy thriller.
Or, you could pop an Advil and be just as prepared as someone who took Tamiflu.
Or, you could just sleep it off, like normal people who have the flu.
God, I'm pretty sure more people died of infected pimples than they did of this swine flu in the same period, except nobody is outlawing pimples. Perspective, people. Perspective.

Latest info is that the virus is becoming less effective as it spreads. The latest suspected cases are showing mild cold like symptoms.
The high death rate in young adults is believed to be caused by a "Cytokine storm" which is an overreaction by healthy immune systems leading to tissue damage and organ failure.

Hrm, some people say "Be smart. Be prepared."
Others say, "Nothing to see here folks move along."
I make up my own mind. So I look, watch, and read.
I read that Mexico City, the place where swine flu started, has closed public events( church masses, movies, schools ), and people dieing from this.
I read some countries have banned flights to Mexico City.
I read the USA Center for Disease Control has increased its alert status and are moving anti-viral meds to the states.
I read about the similarities of the Swine Flu compared to the Spainish Flu of 1918 that killed 50mil to 100mil people. ( ie. they both killed by causing the immune system to overreact, fill the lungs with fluid and drown the person in their own mucous, attacks the healthy )
I read that this thing is easliy transmitted.
Hrm... I'm not paranoid. I ignored the bird flu. I ignored the staph infections that eat you alive.
What do I do as a normal, non-panicky adult, who is smart enough to save for a rainy day?

Seems like the out of box conversation quality lvl has reached a new bottom. Only one critical post about the flu.
One only needs to look to the direction of who profitted in the past from the tamiflu and you start to see the big picture.
Very disturbing developments in the USA. martial law like bills are beeing passed that authorize quarantine's that looks like genocide pre planning. Forced relocation / guarantine of ppl seems imminent and then we have all seen the videos of 500 000 coffins on youtube.
I hope this is speculation towards the wrong spectrum of events. But ppl should get their head out of their ass abouts right now.

as crowded as this planet is, if **** hits the fan i dont think any of us want to think what the governments of the world might do to preserve 'civilized' society.
that said, i can preach ideologies all day... preservation of life, rights of the individual (and i do frequently) but what the hell do any of our freedoms mean if we aren't around to enjoy them?
it's a catch 22, an endless debate. the best way i can think to describe it is in the movie "W.", Cheney is making his argument for invading Iraq and describes our country isolated from the world in regards to resources and "we take this (iran, iraq, etc) no one will **** with us again"
I know that the speech is made up by Oliver Stone, but what i'm driving at is, in the WORST absolute WORST situations, our ideologies go out the window and we turn to survival of the fittest. (why you see FEAR as such a useful and manipulative tool). The speech in that movie was the first time i had actually thought "what if those rich, corrupt, lying SOBs are right? what if this is worth stamping on our constitution for?"
i admit i was ashamed with myself when i thought it. if we can't step back and consider 'WHAT IF?' our own opinions and judgments wrong.. well we are as ignorant and short sighted as the people we criticize
-Some people walk around all day with their heads in their asses on these topics, and your right they need to remove them. -Those of us with our heads already where they should be need to be sure to understand the rhetoric for what it is (population control). However we also need to be prepared that someday the little boy crying wolf just might not be lying. If so, we may be glad they made some of these 'disturbing developments'.
It may be my age, the fact the years and lifes disappointments turned me from idealist to cynic... but i have to say there is a water shed point, a line that might some day be crossed, some time where doing an terrible thing in the name of preparedness and survival is 1000x better than doing nothing in the name of liberty. (i know, it's the torture argument and i hate it. but unlike some i will at least consider the possibility of it's validity)
That said, i'm pretty sure swine flu is a crock of **** media scare and nothing more. From what i've seen more people have died from Tasmanian jock itch than have died from swine flu. As someone else said, when a semi-healthy individual living within an hour of a 1st world hospital dies of this, then i MIGHT start paying attention (probably not).
I both agree with you and disagree with you at the same time. Sometimes it's all bull**** to manipulate us, but be prepared to consider maybe the big picture isn't what we originally thought it was.

http://www.chugai-pharm.co.jp/pdf/annual_report/2009/eAR2009_12_04.pdf
"For the year, we forecast sales of Tamiflu to reach Ñ53.0 billion, up 531.0%, due to expected resumption of government stockpiling in FY2009 and the ongoing recovery of the prescription rate for seasonal influenza."

Dr. Paul - Scare the people to death
Globally, hundreds thousands of people die every year from regular flu. In US alone over 30.000 people die every year.
So what's new? Fear mongering can be a powerful tool for manipulation (problem-reaction-solution). Americans need to be vigilant and stop falling for scare tactics! SARS scare, Avian flu scare and then Swine flu scare.
Let's try to put things into perspective. People are more likely to die from eating at McDonalds then dieing from swine 'flu'. Without big news coverage millions of people die or get sick every year from malnutrition and food/water/medicine filled with chemicals that has not been safety tested on humans. Then people go nuts when they hear 'doom and gloom' predictions about a new flu in the media?. What if? Nothing but fear mongering and smoke and mirrors. Business as usual where the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many. Also mercury in vaccines are not 100% safe. For normal healthy people the health risk involved taking flu vaccines with mercury are far greater than the flu itself.
The US constitution has no time left for timid minds. As the time draws closer to the massive changes/reckoning that are surely to arrive, the current establishment will try every trick in the book to maintain the status que. First above all, it'll be the economics that will give everyone a quick 'reality check'. Follow the money and you'll know the TRUTH.
Who owns you?
"The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing." - Albert Einstein
Willingful ignorance are what has lead Americans happily into the dark ages. Falling from the leading industrial nation to the biggest debtor nation in the history of the world. The monetary system are so corrupt it's collapsing under its own weight.
The truth shall set you free but first you got to get angry
I think the best thing Americans could do right now would be to thrown out their TV. Just try it, to live without fear mongering news media for 3 months and watch how your perceptions improve.
The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers. - Thomas Jefferson
Just because the incompetent corporate news media keep distorting reality does not make it real. Contrary to polular belief in US, the news media has worse coverage than ever and really makes you dumb not smarter. In US the right to use public airwaves was mandated to provide news coverage even at an economic loss. This law (fairness doctrine) ended in 1987, which permitted corporate media cut back their news divisions and their responsibility to serve public interest. Goodbye to investigative journalism and fair reporting. Hello to misinformation and cheap entertainment. Misinformation undermines democracy and why you need a good news media and investigative journalism.
Americans best entertained, least informed are proved true once again. A system that 'assumes' that some people are smarter than others and should lead is the definition of oligarchy. Change come from the bottom, not the top. Americans are really their own worst enemy (ignorance) and the oligarchy has exploited the fact that most americans are probably going to remain willingful ignorant. |

i think tommy lee jones' MIB char. said it best: "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."
every year people say it's worse than the year before every generations elderly comment on how the youth have gone to hell in a hand basket
they are all correct. It's the downward spiral of civilization. We rise on our dreams, we crumble under our own human nature. Ask the Romans, they will explain further.
i'm not saying i disagree with a lot of what you are saying (just how you say it). you strike me as an idealist. i myself am a cynic. we have a lot in common, a cynic is nothing more than a disappointed idealist
i just wish people would stop with the 'wake up', 'save your country', 'educate the masses and improve the country/globe'. it's all a bunch of crap. get realistic. things WILL get better, they just have to get a whole lot worse before that happens. it takes a true revolution. i'm not talking about 1776 or 1789 revolution, i'm talking about civilization breaks down and has to start over (think dark ages)
People will wake up and institute change the same time they always do, when it is too late, they can no longer ignore the problem and there is nothing else left for them to do but start over from scratch.

A WINNER IS YOU!
All this, it's America ****ing with people is bull****. It's a world wide thing, even if nothing is going to come of it.
To the guy that said, "This is just the CDC needed more money", are you serious? The CDC are not the ones in control here, the world heath organization are the ones that raised the threat level.
Also, SARS is still level 5, it's just not a big deal in the US, and this swine flu will be no different, **** will happen, and then it will wreak havoc on the rest of the world that can't support it's people as well.
This is not a US thing, get your head out of your own ass.
If this is a cover up, then make it a world wide one, with obama and other world leaders.
like... this would thing was manufacted at the G20, and the roits where peoples that knew the G20 was really about releasing a new flu on the world.
God, America is the center of the world to some people.
Also I'm sure everyone here that is *****ing about it being a goverment scare, would of been equally as ****ed if they never said anything about it, and people started dying form it, or getting sick. You would of been all like "Why did the govermen hide the information form us? This isn't fair, we want transparency!"
Eve is the same no? you whine about speed, then you whine about the speed nerf.
Well I don't care if they are blowing it out of proportion, at least they are telling us about it, and it's not just america ignoring the world heath organization while the rest of the world responded to it too much.
Sure it sucks when your mom is like , you need a jacket before you go outside, nag nag nag. But you know what , that's her job, and it's not a lie, it's just overprotective.
Also, lol, es, health organizations make a profit from people being sick, your point?
All that said We're at 400 cases in my home state. And that's really not a lot, but the same goes for normal flu. They are always making a gaint deal about the yearly flu shots. Are those scare tactics too?
