Hello there and welcome to EVE!
My advice? Always remember that player knowledge or skill outweighs skillpoints most of the time (although skillpoints give the slight advantage assuming equal skill and knowledge of the game), so your best bet is to read up as much as you can if you find the time for it. Or seek advice or help when you get into what seems like an impossible situation (pewpew or otherwise). Nothing like learning through someone else's mistakes then repeating them yourself to enforce it in your head.
Dont be afraid to lose your ships. Once you get used to the idea that ships are only toys and tools, meant to be used to have fun with and that sometimes they get broken, you'll be comfortable with losing them if it means you have fun at the same time. (Don't fly what you can't afford to lose though, or you'll bore yourself doing 5 hours of grinding just to replace what was lost in 15 seconds of fun)
Give everything a go. Although the key is specialization, most people don't really know what they truly enjoy until they've tried it at least once. You may start of thinking you want to be a pirate but can't stomach the thought of shooting someone else without provocation etc (as an example, not saying you will give up)
The most fun you can have imo is interaction with your fellow players. Finding a good corp that you click with can go a long way to providing you with fun. Experienced pilots in corp can also give you general guidelines and tips on what to do and what not to do. However be selective in choosing a corp that fits you. I made the mistake of joining a so-called 'PVP corp' thinking they might teach me but they sucked *******s. If you find that the corp you joined isn't the one for you, or you're not having fun, then just leave and find another one.
Learn from the experts. The best people to teach you about PVP are the ones who do it everyday on a regular basis (like mercs and pirates), not the weekend warriors who mission and mine all weeek and have a blob op on the weekends. If you want to learn more about industry and stuff like that, head in that direction and find the wealthy industrialists who have discovered the secret to wealth accumulation.
Again, player skill > character skill. As an example of this, there is a PVP video involving experienced players, 2 day old characters and some basic tech1 fitted rifters and a lot of killing of older players to provide inspiration. :)
Don't do's: 1. Do NOT join a mission-running corp (unless you realize your sole interest ingame is grinding missions all day). You will NOT require any tips and advice on missions, as you can just ask any random player in game and chances are they'll be able to help you out. There are also a ton of guides on how to run missions, making mission running corps basically a single player game with am IRC chatroom.
2. Don't give up after setbacks. Use any setbacks as an opportunity to learn about the game. If you pop, you did something wrong. If you get scammed, you did something wrong (or the other person did something very right). In terms of PVP (pewpew), learning from your mistake will serve you better in the long run than constantly trying to avoid it. Saying 'gf' (good fight) after even though you had no chance, and being polite will get you advice from the 'bad' pirates more often than 'LOL NOOB U SUCK GB2WOW' responses.
3. NEVER spell 'lose' as LOOSE (for some reason it annoys me )
Good luck and fly safe (or not )!
