It's a short list, and Eve ain't on it. I am sure perhaps 99% of games aren't on that list either. MUDs and old RPGs should work pretty well |

This isnt just an Eve issue, it is a gaming industry wide issue, makign games accessible to all. And it will also be exploited by cheaters.
Fair enough. Maybe you contact CCP to get an authorization to unlock the disability mode, and then CCP has a list of accounts to pay special attention to?
Well; i wouldn't go far as to require formal certifications of disability be presented to CCP lol, but there is definitely room for a company to make technology available to game developers and make big money , if that is what it takes to motivate them.
I don't honestly think CCP have the money and time and resources to put into this, they would have to license it most likely as would others. Perhaps if you contact Valve and make them more aware of it, Valve are the kind of company that would be able to do this, they got the money and structure for it. |

I can understand folks who are color blind, but if a player is blind even with glasses then that player shouldn't be playing Eve. What if CCP revamps the mining industry that requires players to "visually look" at the rocks to determine mineral content and quality?
Then there is the heat of a battle in which braille is not suitable for or even hinders the player in the process. There is a reason assault ship pilots manually fly their ships instead of hitting "orbit".
The only time I could see braille working at its fullest is during station trading. Welcome to Eve Online. Don't expect people to be nice to you. |

I've actually been wondering for some time how long it will take before the same handicapped grievance mongers that demanded every pool and hot tub in the US have an elevator for morbidly obese people and paraplegics start to file lawsuits against game and web developers who don't make their services 100% accessible.
When I was growing up, it was normal to feel sympathy for the handicapped. But now, a group of them have turned into bitter, hateful, ADA-lawsuit fueled blind, deaf, and wheelchaired devils trying to drag their victims down into legal hell. Nowaways when I see someone handicapped, I just think "I wonder who their lawyer is."
I miss the days when they were nice and sweet and the only thing you had to worry about was starring too long. |

masternerdguy wrote:EVE is 9 years old. It is a mature project that is late in the life cycle, so it is surprising that no accessibility features have been added.
While UI scaling has helped a bit, there are still no options to play EVE in a minimalistic, text oriented, mode. This mode already exists, it is called the thin client and is used by CCP to mass test without wasting computing time on rendering. With some adjustments the thin client could be made compatible with devices such as Braille displays and text to speech systems.
CCP has written EVE in such a way that is is completely incompatible with Braille displays. EVE lacks any sort of color blind mode and has no high contrast mode. Finally, EVE is moving away from text and towards lots of icons which make it even more difficult for visually impaired people to play.
Instead of fixing these problems CCP has been adding additional graphical updates such as the new missile effects, as if they do not consider accessibility to be a priority. This begs a very simple question: CCP, why u no like blind people?
Discuss.
YOU are "begging the question" in basing your premise on the assumption CCP "no like blind people". ****. Would it hurt CCP to try? Small changes like font size etc can't be that difficult. Op wouldn't have anything to complain if they actually went to the effort to make it look liked the cared. I have heard stories where CCP has in fact been pretty ignorant about the whole thing. |

I feel that not only doesn't EVE do anything to assist the visually impaired, I think the game works very hard to MAKE people blind or visually impaired.
Seriously, no ability to change or scale the UI fonts in a game in 2012? How does that even happen? |

And inseneitive morons like yourself should just crawl into a hole a do the world a favor and die. I pray that you never lose you sight because it appears you have taken it for granted. There be you but for the grace of God.
I am visually impaired and to say I'm not worthy of playing this game because of my disability is WORNG. I have struggled for years to play this game. UI changes, font changes, forum changes etc. I still play at 800x600 on a 24" LCD with the largest font sizr available.
The op is absolutely correct CCP has given NO thought to the visually impaired, SIMPLE changes would make a world of difference.
1. Larger fonts 2. High contrast text and UI 3. The ability to scale the UI at a lower resolution. 4. Having Aura read emails and alerts 5. Get input on proposed changes from visually impaired or disabled players BEFORE implemented
Changes to allow disabled playes, be it visual, hearing, limb paralysis or otherwise that would allow them to participate in EVE would benefit everyone as well as potentially expanding their playerbase. Most of these changes could be done with little to no additional effort on their part.
I will continue to play EVE to the best of my ability for as long as I can. I only hope that eventually the changes forthcoming will not prevent me from playing.

Except for the last 2 patches they've done nothing but working on the User Interface to improve it for the visually impaired, they've added scaling, improved both the text font and size and spaced more the gaps between targetted items, if you think it is bad now then you clearly haven't been around long enough to complain. Get off your high horse, CCP have attempted at least to improve it for the visually impaired, that's a lot more than other companies can put a claim too |

If only there was some service where you could get characters for isk, OH WAIT...
The point is the text before all the UI changes was tiny to those even with good vision and your post slates everything they've worked on since.
EDIT: CCP cannot cater to every disability, no company realistically can as it costs both resources and money, CCP are trying to boost all subscriptions as well as working on EvE and DUST as it is without trying to get voice actors and further UI designers to cater to the hard of seeing. |

Maybe if there were already text to speech engine already developed they could easily integrate, Oh wait......

Your wife's phone also has the licensing fees for that text to speech software baked into the cost. Why should Eve subscribers have to pay fees for something that effects very close to 0% of the Eve population? |

All joking aside.
This game has a base of 300k accounts and they are improving the game for the majority. If they stop and spend all there time working on a facet that will only help a tiny proportion of the game it will make the able bodied see the disabled more and more as militants whose rights come before the majority.
I know that only 5% of the blind population are actually blind and the majority fall into your category of partially sighted but can you not find any work arounds. and if you want things changed perhaps you could as a blind man could offer solutions to the problems that you face?
For instance, how would you use brail in this game. As far as im aware screens are flat and not bumpy (i know this was facetious but im sure you understand) I dont normally troll, but when i do i do it on General Discussion. |
