1) Alliance "A" composed of a close group of corps attack weak Alliance "B", composed of dysfunctional corps. Alliance B collapses, leaving Alliance A with a load of space they don't have the numbers to defend. 2) Alliance A goes on a massive recruiting spree to pad out the membership 3) New members/corps share little in common with the core group, and often have different agendas 4) Bad blood develops, core group suffer from burnout and new corps have little motivation. Membership leakage from the founder corps begins 5) Now Alliance A is down on motivation, founder members and communication, they in turn are attacked by the more close-knit Alliance "C" 6) Alliance A failure cascades, leaving Alliance C with their space, and the cycle begins again.
Clearly, in order to be a success it is better to avoid massive recruitment in order to keep space. Either that or have some "hook" that means that new members immediately identify with "the cause", so that they are motivated to pull together. That can range from brilliant FCs to novel beer fleets or even things like national identity.

Whilst this is undoubtedly true of many alliances, it is not true of all, and it never ceases to amaze me how many people just keep making the same mistakes over and over again - thinking THIS TIME it'll be different.
The amazing thing is that some alliances have gone beyond this stage, and seeing how they did it and whether or not their methods and tactics are transferrable given your unique corp/alliance ethos is the hard bit.

Complete lack of shame, coupled with copious amounts of Proxay. Sprinkle with Swedes and Germans, drizzle with Chinese PVPers (Yes, they DO exist, and are quite good). Serve with beer and peanuts. ---
Unless specifically stated otherwise, the opinions expressed in my posts do not reflect those held by my corporation or alliance.

I hear that a massive 'council' of leaders and weekly alliance leader meetings on teamspeak both work very well.

a) strong leader, that one is obvious
b) good communication, people need to know whats going on. Be careful of being so worried about opsec that members dont know whats happening.
c) no CTAs, if you have to force people to play then your doing it wrong.
d) no councils, councils are things which tend to spring up in alot of alliances and usually they grow into massive things which spend all their time talking and no time doing.
e) delegate, just because councils are dumb doesn't mean you don't need a couple of people to delegate some of the workload too.
f) recruitment, be careful not to recruit too fast. Number of people in corp is not a benchmark of sucess.

its very simple to awnser these questions. however to implement them is something totaly different.
a good way is to have a clear strategy. You need goals, which you can work to.
To achieve these goals you need leadership. someone who is stable and prefeably charismatic.. Also this person need to be online ALLOT!!, leading the team in to glory.
Ofcourse there other ways to be successfull, but if you do this 1 right you corp / alliance will only go up.

This pretty much. Would also add having a solid core philosophy, understanding what your corp is and what you're trying to do is important. Corps without a clear ethos tend to eventually fall apart. Additionally leadership needs to be willing to admit if they're wrong. Nothing worse than leadership stubbornly insisting on one thing when all information is going counter to that.

Lets see
Pure over 1000 members lost space disbanded Hydra the same Triumvirate Smash Roadkill Bruce
As soon as they lost space everyone left. Im sure they are more..)
.they dont even continue as an alliance, just shows that really they are not an 'alliance' . one for one and err one for one..
Xelas disbanded when uncle bob told them 'hey, gtfo'. I think something similar happened with KOS as well. --- I smack just for myself.

KOS was pretty much dead on the inside when -a- invaded. I also totally agree that space isnt what makes a corp successful. Its more impotant that your corp/alliance is well developed and cohesive before you take space so if you loose the space you will stay together.
