Everyone has their own views and opinions on what makes a corporation a success and because EVE has so many different ways to play the game and achieve different types of success it becomes somewhat difficult to really straight answer. In general success from the outside is generally determined by size and an amount of territory owned with a few exceptions tossed in every once in awhile. But a Empire based industrial/trade corp that has 15 members may not be viewed as a success from the outside but if they are able to turn in 15 billion a month in profit, are they any less successful then a 100 man corporation out in 0.0 struggling to stay alive day in and day out. What about a small alliance that has almost complete control over a large low-sec area where they are the top dog and you follow their rules or you die, are they worse off then a large alliance barely holding onto sov out in 0.0?
EVE is just a game in the end though and the real way of determining success of a corp/alliance is what their members do right before they log on. Are they punching in their password quick as they can pick up a ship and join his mates, or as soon as he sits down is he sighing and dreading logging in because he knows their is going to be a inbox full of of drama and BS.

Ooooh.
First off is a vision. Without a vision your organization will be viewed as just another fish in the barrel, from the outside. With vision your more attractive to potential members. If you achieve that vision and you don't have another one to fill its place, your days are numbered.
Flexibility.
Strict adherence to an ideology is probably the worst thing a weak organization could do. You have to keep many diverse points of view happy in your member-base.
NRDS for example. I find this one kind of funny because it's members are usually wishing that everyone else would follow NRDS so that they could do their own thing in peace. But, they feel that no one else will, so it's their "divine duty" or whatever to uphold the ideology.
Decisions can be changed as well. Quite a few groups stick to a decision so they don't appear inconsistent with said ideologies.
Dedication.
Yeah, sure we log in and log out and go back to reality. But what do your members do while they are online? Do they **** off doing their own thing or do they contribute to the group. Leadership is the one who sets this atmosphere of contribution up.
Management isn't leadership. Leadership isn't management.
Leadership is influence. Management is keeping the group on task and the machine running.
Atmosphere.
If it's all work and no play and horribly uptight when you should be shooting the ****, well your organization will probably slide into Elitism or some other bull**** manner of thinking.
So many more topics. But I think these right here are paramount in EVE. Everything else (recruitment, budgeting, money-making) is simply management. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail - Cortes

And of course D)
Just a small town girl, livin in a lonely world She took the midnight train goin anywhere Just a city boy, born and raised in south detroit He took the midnight train goin anywhere
A singer in a smokey room A smell of wine and cheap perfume For a smile they can share the night It goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard Their shadows searching in the night Streetlight people, living just to find emotion Hiding, somewhere in the night
Working hard to get my fill, Everybody wants a thrill Payin anything to roll the dice, Just one more time Some will win, some will lose Some were born to sing the blues Oh, the movie never ends It goes on and on and on and on
(chorus)
Dont stop believin' Hold on to the feelin' Streetlight people Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail - Cortes

A wise man once told me "A black belt is only a white belt that never quit"
Bottom line every group/corp/community will experience high times and bumps in the road, just dont give up and keep trying and stick to a realisticly achievable plan/goal/vision based on your group's strenghts/capabilities/desires, perseverence is key.
Also, remove any poison from your midst that is holding you back from reaching your full potential.

So has your Council of Elders written up your Vision Statement yet?
I think what's most needed is a big banner that reads "IS THIS GOOD FOR THE ALLIANCE?" Stuff like that really brings it home to the average alliance member.
Wait, who am I kidding.
It's actually all about rifters.

On a corp level, its all about having fun and enjoying the comraderie. Having a common goal is important also.
On an alliance level---pretty much pick a side and hope for the best. Eve is a napfest. If you can predict the future you might get to keep your space for a decent amount of time.

We have fun and are in no rush to expand for the sake of holding space or some coloured blobs on the map.
C.T. have short and long-term goals, and having thrown ourselves in the deep-end in our old incarnation we have a good idea how not to do things and the problems virtually all corporations and alliances suffer from. However even after two years I still have much to learn, which for me is the fun part.
Build up slowly with quality people who share the same goal and work to make sure the entire alliance does the same. Have weekly operations of all types (Zerg fleets for instance) but avoid 'meetings'. Let Directors have freedom to do their jobs and most importantly, the leader needs to show commitment, passion and drive because that is what people are after. You need to be able to look at the bigger picture and remain calm and confident no matter what happens because at the end of the day you are the person people rely on when the **** hits the fan.
I wouldn't say we are drastically different from other corporations but we actually have fun and don't spin our ships in station. We are unified by the goal to login and enjoy our Eve time, not our different Eve professions. Factor in a mature bunch of members, multiple trusted directors and my job is made relatively easy and it's probably why we have stuck together for so long.

Various posters identified with elements of success which vary from one entity to another, please forgive my possible wall of text, but just a genuine attempt at replying your questions is due here.
"Eve is fun" the golden phrase.
Every person out there has something they log on that is worth logging on for, otherwise they will end up playing something else.
So let's take a look at what affects "Success".. come closer :P
You have 3 main elements that contribute to success tremendously those are mostly and not limited to:
1. Timing 2. External Factors 3. Internal Factors
1.Timing: When to make a move. Hence planning and foreseeing the future with logic and experience pays off in most cases. Learning from the past to avoid repeat failures. Counting your blessings in the present while following through with a plan, a plan can be anything you desire, a plan depends on timing always if you want to call it successful in the end, except the lucky strikes :P that's another story.
2.External Factors: If you look at what are the "outside elements that affect your EVE experience within EVE itself, they boil down to and not limited to the following list:
Friends Enemies Neutrals Reputation Resources Taking advantage of a distant profitable market RL interfering with leadership or the mass of your manpower or maybe Nibiru crashing into earth oops lol no more humankind.
Without going into details with each point. There maybe other external factors depending on who each entity is and where they are located on earth.
3.Internal Factors: This is the strongest and most vulnerable of all 3 components to success, it's a garden that requires never-ending care, it employs experienced yet very flexible mentalities in all levels, some are dictatorial, some are democratic or whatever other forms of governing philosophies you deem fit.
Let's zoom in on 1 toon by him/herself, the first unit that forms a corporation, a toon must be successful in order to bring something to the table of the corporation, and so forth into an alliance, or rather learn and develop into a successful toon aswell. So if we seperate the toon "1 person" out of the picture what do we get?
"Self Sustaining Individual" which is the easiest of EVE rudiments, now each of you measures success in EVE by endless gauges: some pilots love to laugh and have fun, some play for the social aspect, some are fixed on killboards etc etc etc etc and the ISK addiction, whatever is your thirst in EVE, your sucess is tied so closely to your thirst.
Let's zoom out a bit into the corporation level:
A Successful corporation is a corporation that sustains its existance with or without an alliance, because it can satisfy its pilots thirst and develop it's own brews of thirst as a combined effort, just like any beer company out there :P
A corporation needs tremendous communication levels, willing and capable pilots, skillful mentality, flexibility and adaptability and beyond all, something common that everyone banks on and taps into to BELONG, once such elements are established, you get loyalty or disloyalty, which brings security to our views and tightness and vulnerability avoidance ideologies. OF course i might have skipped or missed a few things here and there, blame the vodka :P
So in all you need a corporation made out of pilots who enjoy each other, accept each other and can have fun regardless, or famine or destruction, they are WILLED to continue, they are prepared for the worse and the better regardless, each person out there is different, some people lose their identity and become unified with their corp tag, some are a bit more detached, if **** hits the fan they go bye bye... balance is key.
Now even zooming out further to look at this awesome creature, formed of smaller cells... ALLIANCES.
Apply the same methodology of individual pilots but switch the word pilot for corporation this time, you'll get a closer to something deemed "success" in an alliance.

The corp I fly with is small and unique, and I think it's our unusual nature that makes it work.
We've been around almost three years now. We've never had more than 15 pilots. We do not actively recruit. None of that is very unsual.
What makes us unusual is our 100% nomadic approach. We wander in deep 0.0 (including w-space recently). We do not get involved with alliances or politics. We don't care about NBSI, NRDS, or sov.
For an idea of how far our wanderings take us, this link goes to a screenshot of my map with the My Bookmarks setting active: http://deepspacegypsy.deviantart.com/art/April-2009-121341357
I act as our primary scout and I collect bookmarks everywhere we go. If the system is green we have been there, as a group, and we've either hunted, been hunted, explored, ratted, pvpd or salvaged. We make our isk as we move.
As a true nomadic fleet, we maintain no infrastructure. We live out of our cargo holds. It's a very challenging approach to galactic travel. We find that very, very few pilots are willing to accept the many inconveniences of true wandering, but the pilots we find who love our way of flying all become long-term members. Frankly, I couldn't imagine doing it any other way now. The thought of settling down in one area, planting some orbitting equipment to defend, feed, and babysit is completely uninteresting.
The freedom we enjoy is rare and addictive. We offer only one corp benefit - we have access to ALL space. We fly where we wish, when we wish.
