Technically, I'm sure he could do a fine job. But creatively, Clear Skies is as close to the EVE universe as Star Trek.
I would rather they release better tools than reel in everyone who bothered devoting that sort of time and effort. That way, it gives everyone a chance to share their interpretation on similar terms.

This is not a flame post (but I'm sure the next 5 will be), but would you care to explain why you think so? The only real thing I can come up with is that the characters are not in pods, and I think its established canon that only a fraction of space captains are swimming in goo.

i wonder, did OP even bother to ask john if he was interested in a job at CCP?
its all very well to make a pointless internet petition (they totally work guys), but its unlikely he would even want such a job.
CCP has two offices, IIRC. that means that 99.999999999% of people would need to move to a different state and probably a different country in order to work for ccp. odds are that John is one of these people.
.....ive run out of ways to express how dumb this thread seems to me

Nevermind pushing CCP to do it.
This guy can walk in an interview (for a relevant job) with a portable video player, show this, say "I did that" and he's got a job

Edited by: Promithius on 11/05/2009 23:53:06 I can safely say that John will be overwhelmed by all the support you are giving him an massively relived that you all loved it so much. But im pretty sure that he wants his life back for at least a while before doing anything.
As for weather or not CCP should hire him, i don't know if it would suit him or not , thats a choice that John would need to make. But i support the idea of giving him the opportunity !!

Probably he can't and even if he could, maybe he's not interested at all? (maybe has a better pid job and one which he's happy enough with, you can't know)
Sure, the video was awesome, but soemone should ask him first :P

The lack of capsules is the most obvious, but there are quite a few others.
- A Tempest being piloted by only 3 crew where it is stated that BS crews number in at least the hundreds.
- Significant portions of the combat and combat mechanics deviate from Eve's own. (Entirely forgivable, as a realistic portrayal would make for far less dramatic action. For example; instead of a heroic gate charge, you'd have a single cloaked ship sneaking through the bubble and jumping through. Assuming of course, they didn't already have a jammer in possession, which they of course, would have.)
- As another example of creative liberties being taken with mechanics (and there are quite a few, so I'll leave them at these two), it is for some unspecified reason, not possible to fit hull, armor and shield repairers to repair a ship. It appears that CS happens in a world with only station-side repairs.
- The notion that a stargate can be shut down in the circumstances it was (CS1) borders on deus ex machina, considering there are very few examples of this in established canon and in those moments, it is only the universe's most powerful factions that have this capability (CONCORD and the Jove are the two I'm thinking of, but perhaps there have been other instances).
- The entire "Pure Gallente" story plot is, whilst admittedly plausible, a bit "thin" and is there to serve more as a plot device, than an actual plot.
- The actions and behavior of the Caldari Navy are not at all realistic. They would kill that Titan with ease (particularly if it was in such a weakened state). They would likely never let it into the system in the first place, however. The story plays upon the Malkalen incident, but that was only possible through a unique set of circumstances that made the Caldari vulnerable in a way that would likely never be repeated.
- Tempests can make Avatars explode by docking with their rear thrusters!
I could go on. But there is no point. Clear Skies is clearly not intended to be an accurate portrayal of New Eden and as a result, often contrives up plot devices that make for a dramatic story, but do not mesh with the established world. Anyone foolish enough to bash it for not meshing with the established canon though, is missing the fairly obvious point that it never tried to. Fortunately, I've not seen much of that except from the most diehard roleplay folk.
For the record, I think both episodes were fantastic and I'm a huge fan. I put aside the storyline inconsistencies when I watch, and honestly, I just don't think you could tell the same enthralling story as easily if you had things like realism and internal consistency to worry about. The challenge was already large enough, I would imagine, and the storyline still manages to engage us all and bring forth gushing praise, so I can only consider that it succeeds, despite its flaws. I think you have to applaud Clear Skies for what it is, as opposed to lamenting it for what it's not.

The inherent problem with commercializing something like this is as follows:
Any time any corporate entity gets their hands on stuff like this, it ceases being a labor of love and becomes srs bsns.
Once someone besides the original creator starts dumping money on projects like this, they start wanting a say in what comes out of it. A little tweak here, a nudge there, and suddenly this great idea you once had is no longer really yours.
I for one am perfectly content with JR and company making Clear Skies the way they are. I think a big part of it's draw is that it's honest art, without any corporate mug trying to muck it up and commercialize it.
Sure, it'd be nice to get more episodes, but at what price? (and I'm not referring to just money)

I'm fine with a Tempest killing a Titan. After all, an Abaddon can DD a Leviathan, so this is actually a stretch more believable
Clear Skies II is very fun to watch, highly entertaining. I don't think it needs to stick to canon to accomplish what it sets out to do. Day of Darkness brought Eve's history to life, the team behind it should receive similar accolades as well.

Thanks for sparing me the effort. This is exactly it, and even the rpers would probably shut up if the movies focused more on comedy and satire instead of drama.
Any attempt to tell a coherent story is going to be riddled with faults that prevent it from becoming an extension to the EVE universe. Even Day of Darkness II, which comes closest to being a 1:1 representation has a long way to go.
The closest players will ever be able to do is capture the essence of EVE in an artistic way. Some of the early corporate promos and advertisement videos do this, and for that reason they stand the test of time. I can pull up NSN or BIG's recruitment videos and it puts the game into context better than most of the stuff posted today.

Signed. A Clear Skies vid with the right tools would be nothing short of epic. Hell, give them the tools and turn them loose to make a hour long episode. I'd be willing to bear the wait to see that one.

Support. not for ccp hiring john rourke, that's up to the man, but he has completed a tremendous job and would probably be in hign demand by eve populace (the part that bothers to visit forums anyway).
But for a EVE-world based series. Would be awesome.

PS: If somehow this idea gets realised, for the love of god, don't stick to the game mechanics. If the poplace wanted to see game mechanices in action, they'd just need to DL any of damige's / cown's movies. * |

Ideally it would be the best for CCP to just release toolsets to make these movies for everyone. In regards to JR just offering him cash so he can be creative on his own terms (consider it an investment).
However, to gather the OP thoughts on this thread. A great deal of us in the EVE community enjoyed Clear Skies immensely and it has become quite a hit on forums reporting EVE content and even some gaming magazines. I think we all share the OPs intentions we would like to see CCP offer him something for his work in this movie series.
Perhaps EVE lifetime subscription or offering to pay for all expenses at EVE Fanfest. Gift Of Tempest class BS model from the stores. ANYTHING just to show CCP want to support JR.

Provided he's got nothing in general against working for CCP, he could start a fresh show instead of continuing the Clear Skies storyline, which wouldn't leave him or anyone else with the impression of bastardizing what he's already achieved.
Yea, he'd be their ***** from then on, but if he was a good ***** everyone would gain from it and he might learn to enjoy it.
It puts the lotion on the skin!
Besides, it would give the WiS assets some meaningful use outside of being EVE's personal Ironforge (ref: WoW hellhole).

To all those that asked if the OP, ie Me, asked if I had spoken to John Rourke if he wanted to work for CCP the answer is no. It has nothing to do with that. The point of this useless internet petition is to tell CCP that something like Clear Skies would be a massive hit.
For all those who posted about inconsistencies from story line to game content I donÆt know the reasons why John put it together the way he did. I am sure he will have posted his reasons somewhere but my thoughts are ôWho Caresö.
The point of this thread is simply to rally the community a bit to show CCP that a mini-series like this would be well accepted.
Take this thread for what it is. A bit of fun and another way to say thanks to the John RourkeÆs of the community for their efforts.
