Well people pay me ransoms everyday and i always honour them.
i still don't see the points ur making, pay me 50mil or pay someone on teh market teh cost of ur implants and pay the station for a new clone whih is most likely more than 50mil.
its cheaper to pay me, make sense to me.
I think the point the one fella was making is that, he has isk generation that is not dependent on combat, and can recover the losses though other activities. While you are supposedly tied to 'donations' from the random passerby. Random passerbys can prevent you from continuing if they refused to pay a ransom, and forced you to live off the the bits that don't blow up.
What I don't get though, is how does one get caught in their pod in anything but a bubble? You can always warp out faster then they can re target you.

i've had some fairly profitable eject ransoms in the past, got a guy to give me his brutix once in exchange for letting his pod go
i also tried to do a pod or post and have the guy make me a recruitment post, but he was a little too flustered and the thread got locked :(

Some people don't know you can do that. Others get caught due to lag/slow downs/disconnections/you name it.

the loss mail was an attempt at a joke. I delete all automaticly generated mail,
considering the number that I get just for docking a pod at a station and refueling notices, if I didn't I wouldn't be able to open mail for the lag spike.
Also, I am not trying to derail the topic. I am just stating succintly the lesson that the OP worked so hard to drive home; Paying ransoms is stupid.
Care to enlighten me Spank as to what part you think is pathetic. Lets see; is it pathetic to only fly what you can afford to lose, is it pathetic to realize that this is just a game, blowing up pixels don't matter, is it pathetic to use a scout. Perhaps it is pathetic to keep an eye on local and jet at the first sign of trouble. Maybe it is pathetic that I don't care about dying and I practice all the things that you guys say a pilot should do to avoid dying, practices that if applied consistently will make you filthy rich.
Here is what I think is pathetic. Your policies turn large swaths of New Eden into economic dead zones. What is this nonsense that once a person has been ransomed they have to leave. Based on that kind of broken logic anywhere you are no one else can be. That is just stupid. Wouldn't it have been better if you had used the dialog with him as a warning ( or here is a novel idea -- how about a mutual arrangement where you both could have made some isk -- he did offer.)
Then you follow it up by whining to CCP for changes to the game's mechanics to enliven these dead zones; taxes on empire dweller, reposition of industry assets such as POS to low space, nerfing down of NPC missions, and removal of NPC corp access. Hell one of you actually went as far as to ask publicly for CCP to implement an automatic ransom button; I guess that point and click as it is is too hard.
My message is simple -- you are going to get podded anyway so why pay to get podded. It is bad business. The fact that one person may occasionally "honor a ransom" does not move the average or the outcome one bit-- you are paying someone to do harm to you.
Actually, I applaud the OP for spreading the gospel. I can not be everywhere or on at all times to tell new pilots the futility of trying to reason with pirates. There can be no intelligent discourse. Just try to avoid being caught while you do your thing and when you do get caught move on as quickly as possible.
The best insulation against pirates and other losses while in New Eden is a warm blanket of isk. Isk makes piracy and death a minor inconvenience. Form a business plan that accounts for getting podded. At the same time piracy is a business, not a smart or well structured one but a business none the less. My campaign is to keep pirates poor and irrelevant. Then you can do me no harm. The nut is that some of my best advertisement advocates are you guys yourselves. This is PVP at its best.
So kill away and I will keep closing the convo.

Actually, I have been podded a billion time and I have never paid ransom. Anytime I begin to feel too attached to this clone I head to Decon and let someone pad their KB. Implants, ship, clone cost and all. For a while they stopped killing me (I guess it was not fun anymore).
Also, there is no rage here. I'm all about the isk baby!
The only thing I find troubling is that there is no mechanism for me to have a titan -- the only thing I lack is the infrastructure to claim SOV. I guess I could just buy one outright but that is a lot of trouble to go through to circumvent the lack of a backup alliance.
For you to see rage in my post means that you are assuming that we are equals which we are not ( and you know what they say about people that make assumptions).
A smart pilot still says "NO!" to ransoms.

here's what i got out of your posts:
blah blah blah i am a carebear and i had a bad experience getting podded after paying a ransom, pirates are pathetic and i hate them, the game would be better if there was concord in lowsec
and then some bleating about i have all kinds of money coming out of every pore i don't need your **** i could buy you i am so much better than you
a couple things you need to know;
firstly, without pvp the market would suffer from violent inflation and nothing would be worth anything. pvp stimulates the market. pod piracy stimulates the implant market. pvp is fun.
secondly, it's nice to pretend that you have lots of isk on the forums. it's fun to buy isk from chinese websites that will probably get you banned and act rich for a while. it's also fun to not understand the mechanics of titans and why (at least as far as i am informed) pretty much every titan-bearing account in eve is shared and why individuals who get titans usually quit the game.
and thirdly, it's cute that you think you have more money than me. it really is. :)

Also I'm rich and I think all pirates are bad for the game (and my wallet). CCP should also give me a titan or at least let me build one in hisec even though I will have no use for it whatsoever, since I don't fully understand what it's all about.
Did I mention I'm really rich and losing a ship doesnt matter to me?

Well then you missed my point completely.
Let me break it down to you. PVP is good. Hell, I actually once killed a person trying to kill me (was kind of strange). Mostly, I die but it ain't a big deal. Certainly, not such a big deal that I would pay someone to prevent it from happening.
Business is better. I like making isk. It allows me to manage my risk and opens doors for me. My business model includes room for me to get podded. Arguable, I can do more in the game than you because I can risk lots more than you(this is what I mean by not the same level). What my business plan does not include is for maintaining a well fare state of handing out isk to every1 that comes along.
I don't hate pirates--- well, actually I do in a role play kind of way. For me this is just economic PVP. It is all about minimizing you ability to impact my game play.
Hopefully, it the pilot is smart the OP just added a new pilot to my loose alliance of extortion resistance.
It is just good business sense to say "NO!" to ransoms.

Besides, it's an appropriate climax to a hard fought battle.

The only problem I have with pirates and their ransoms are the one's that think my stuff is worth more than it is. If I'm in lowsec in a retriever, paying little enough attention to allow you to jump into the belt I'm mining and lock me down, I don't have anything worth 50mil. I'm in a +1 implanted (at best) jump clone with a T1 barge with T2 modules. Offer a 50mil ransom and my response is usually going to be to "Picard Tactics." Set self destruct, approach scramming ship and hope a glitch in the game causes my exploding ship to destroy yours. Although sometimes it's fun to pay .01 isk just to see if the so-called pirate is such a noob they see the wallet blink and unjam (it's worth a try :P). I've never payed more than a .01 isk bounty, and I've been blown up, podded, harrassed, heckled, bubbled, bumped, etc. I don't like losing a perfectly good ship, and I don't like losing a clone, but it happens, and even if I'm completely broke, I can still find a way to get a badger and mine in hisec until I can buy a good ship again if I need to. Pirates will continue asking for ransom as long as someone pays it. As for the OP, his victim HOPEFULLY learned a few lessons. 1. Don't park at a planet in low sec. 2. Don't pay a ransom and stay in system. 3. Don't park at another planet after paying the ransom and forgetting rule 2. 4. Sob stories don't work with pirates. 5. "I only have 30mil left" followed by "I'm going to put a 500mil bounty on you" statements tend to make pirates laugh, or at least ignore anything else you promise from then on. 6. Why are you "scanning the universe?" in a Myrmidon and not PVP fit? Where are your light drones/webber/scrambler? 1 Taranis should not be able to break a tank on a BC. Failfit? 7. Insure the ship, if it's all junk fittings, no loss there if ship is platinum insured. 34-38mil in cash can buy and fit several more acceptable cruisers to "scan the universe" in. 8. If you go to 0.0 or even low sec, do what I do. Plan on getting ganked, getting an adrenaline rush with the little red flashys show up, and make a pretty explosion. And hope, if they gank you 20-some jumps from your nearest harbor, that someone will at least have the decency to pod you. I've survived PVP some, but I'm really good at dying in a flash of fire and light. It's a game. And the "podkill express" is always running!

quoting LiteShow; Pirates will continue asking for ransom as long as someone pays it.
thanks Lite -- I could not have said it better myself.
I have resisted letting posters drag this into the personal but the service record does warrant some comment because it is relevant to the discussion.
Losing 3 carrier is "a'ight" but hardly special considering the 40% baseline payout of insurance. More likely they were fully insured but that is beside the point. What this does show is that you have entirely too much isk and if you are a dyed in the wool pirate the only way you could have gotten it is for victim pilots to have given it too you**. I find that unacceptable because they are paying you to threaten me.
What I hope is that the victim pilot has learned that paying ransoms sustains piracy( since we all know that since invention meta 4 ain't worth squat).
It's simple: To reduce the impact of piracy, pilots need to learn to stop paying ransom. I will stay on that message until every pirate i meet is confined to flying frigs and cruisers. It wont stop pvp and that is not my goal but it will make will make regular pilots think before they hand over isk and wake up in a clone vat for being stupid.
Smart pilots always answer "NO!" to ransoms.
**note that I did not imply that you are an outright isk buyer -- perhaps for the sake of civil discussion you might do the same in the future

As for the whole ransom thing: I usually only do it with pods. In the rare case I ask for a ransom for a ship, it has to be 50 mil or so, otherwise I prefer to take my chance and hope an easter egg drops (had a drake somehow drop his fitted rigs a few weeks back, but I guess that's a known bug).
And as I solo most of the time, I don't bother to establish any terms other than "pay me and I'll let you go". Although that can mean anything, from my perspective, it implies I'll turn off my point and let him warp. After that, he has a few seconds before I start hunting for him again.
And I don't get the concept of the 'don't pay ransom and they'll stop it' crap. Well I do get it, but really what are your intentions? We will still go after you, the only difference is that we'll pop you instead of asking for a ransom to let us go.
The truth is that most of us don't make ISK through ransoms. The few that do usually fly very cheap ships they don't care about losing and can be paid with loot alone.
Why do YOU PvP? We like pretty explosions too.

Not trying to stop piracy. That would be bland. Just trying to reduce its appeal so that other more structured forms of commerce can succeed.
If New Eden is a sand box then those that build structure should (and do) reap better rewards than those that treat it as a litter box.
Say "No!" to ransoms.

I never even implied that you're trying to stop piracy. This is just how we PvP. We don't care if you pay ransoms or not, your loot is good enough. Come to low sec, you'll get a fight. If every single person in all of new eden stopped paying ransoms, you'd still get a fight.
I wouldn't say I build structures, but the ISK I make while trading (which allows me to concentrate all my efforts into killing you) seems like enough rewards.

Why teach new players how to pay a ransom? Saying "Well, right click on my name, select send money, type in the amount - now don't try and stiff me on a couple of zeroes, old bean! - click on 'ok'" just seems a bit too long winded for my tastes. Just pop their Velator and have done with it IMO ---

I may be a fairly new player and a fairly horrible pirate but ransoms seem economical to me. Seeing as most of us arent producing enough ISK to have "titan owner" as a whim on our to-do list it makes sense that when I fly a 30mil ship I would rather pay 10-20mil rather then pay for the whole damn thing again and have to go pick up the pieces. If some players (including myself) feel the need to gain more money them from module drops by using other players want of NOT dieing then so be it and more money gets pumped into the markets. If you dont mind dieing then in all honesty I cant say I mind picking up a rich man's mods. :)
