I am training this (my only) character to be a Miner. I usually mine while doing other things at the computer.
When I feel like shooting something, I do Lvl3 missions in a Myrmidon. I have little combat skills, but NPCs just seem to pop in seconds against my drones. I did train my Mechanics to fit a good, cheap, double repped T2 armor tank, so I can yawn at a dozen Cruisers, frigates and towers shooting at my never ending tank.
The thing is...I can fly a Domi now. And in less than a week I could have a similar armor tank for her than I have for my Myrm.
And while I am enduring my training to reach the Hulk, I just read from a respected user (Akita) that Lvl4 mission runners make more money than 0.0 miners, which was (and still is) my original chosen path.
Is that really true? Will I make more cash AFKing Lvl 4s in a Dominix than mining Plagioclases, or even risking an Exhumer in 0.0?
A bit of insight welcome. http://www.geocities.com/vagrantweapons/db.jpg |

Yeah pretty much level 4s will earn you more money. CCP has screwed up the risk vs reward for a while now.

Yay for moronic false dichotomies. @OP
Properly run missions are the best isk per hour. AFK in a domi is not going to get you close to that.

Mining if you can't be bothered to play the game. Missions if you find mining boring but can tolerate F1-F8 Grind. Piracy if you feel like exploiting others for cashflow.
What do I do? Well half the time, I'm an Orca Pilot - So absolutely sweet F/A except hit F1 and F2 - sit back and feel my ass grow.

you can afk mission run with a domi because you set drone to kill everything and then let them be.
if you find a good exploration site in 0.0 then you wallet will be filled in no time :)
risk vs reward system is screwed and something need to be done since with mission giving out so much isk there really is no inspiration to go to 0.0 to earn more isk which is probably why only 10% live in 0.0

You can make a theoretical 100m an hour mining in 0.0, which beats the pants off of any mission running. However unless you actually are mining ABC ores in a secure 0.0 system and have logistics worked out in advance you are better off doing missions.

Take my "AFKing in a Domi" with a grain of salt, please. I have read ABOUT it, and I am just mentioning it.
This said, in my regular lvl3 missions, I just aggro everything with a few shots, release the T2 mediums and go make a sandwich or something.
Unless it's a mission where I better withdraw them into the bay to re-aggro new spawns, it requires close to no attention. And I don't macro-mine, by the way. I merely set up my lasers and minimize it for a few minutes while I do something else.
So, for now, doing Lvl4 missions is comparable, or even more profitable than 0.0 mining unless you have a top notch mining operation setup.
Understood. Thanks.

Depends how many accounts you mine with. You can only run so many missions at the same time, but there's a bunch of people running many, many, maaaany miners at the same time. On top of my head I can think of several that is making hundreds of millions a day, seven days a week, just mining.
But that takes a bit of effort. Tanking, hauling, multiple miners, preferably you got a POS with a Rorq, decent refining, etc. Mining is definately profitable, but it takes a little effort to start it up. Just like industry can make you filthy rich, but takes a little effort to get started.
For simple, low-effort, "safe" isk, nothing competes with lv4 in Empire. For simple, low-effort, less safe and a bit more fluctuating (but in the long run more profitable) income.. ratting and lv4 in 0.0 > lv4 in Empire. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

Maybe the 90% don't want to join the mega-corps that rule 0.0, putting up with the corporate politics/BS and obnoxious egos. And if you don't join, you'll get your carebear a** handed to you on a very regular basis, guaranteed.
If you really want to populate 0.0, let people in without having to join anything or having your roving gangs pod them every other time they undock. There are areas of NRDS, but all in all 0.0 is personna non grata except for those who want to suck up to corporations and alliances or who want to take a walk on the wild side for awhile.

Another variance are what kinds of missions you get. You already know what ore is in front of you.
You have a small list of L4 missions that have great bounties, end rewards, and loot. And then you have the medium grouping and the crap missions.
Generally the best you can get is Worlds Collide, Angel/Guristas Extravaganza, The Assault, Gone Berserk, and Damsel in Distress. Next up you would have missions like Enemies Abound which has great wrecks and end reward but no bounties at all (although my wallet keeps reporting bounties anyways). This also happens with many of the drone missions. You also may see quite a few missions that have a 2.5 mil end character but the ships you fight just getting to him is hardly worth it. Then there are the crap mission. Recon = Shuttle/shuttle/tank and takes maybe 5 minutes to complete if that. Duo of Death, ooooo, 2 battleships and a splatter of adds. and then theres the new drone mission where you kill a single drone and a ton pop out but the mission is done. They don't even drop minerals.
Now after that factor you factor in how many people are in your group which splits the bounties and end rewards. Although the more you have the faster you'll be doing them. If you solo you can make as much as 40-60 mil on a Damsel. Now with 2 people you make make half that depending on how you sort out wrecks or whatever but it would also take you have the time depending on setup.
Then the last part would be how you clean up each wreck. Personally I've been using a dedicated salvager for the last week and it greatly increases missioning speed. you can also salvage while you mission but your bs will not get the whole mission into its bay, and your other option is to salvage after a mission which of course will take more time.
So yes it is possible I guess to make 100 mil an hour if you really bust some balls but in most cases I would not count on it.

I am very casual in my approach to everything, but basically I get to see the Gone Berserk a lot. I only choose agents with 100% combat missions, too.
I jump in, complete everything, bookmark, then return in a Catalyst which I have fitted with a named capacitor recharger, a named afterburner, and three T2 Expanded cargoholds, together with 3 tractor beams and 5 salvagers.
I loot everything, salvage everything, and more or less I am sure I'm getting a nice figure per hour.
That's why I was considering jumping to Lvl 4s in a Battleship instead of pushing towards the Hulk.
I'll give it some thought.
Thanks a lot. http://www.geocities.com/vagrantweapons/db.jpg |

Get some trade ideas , sell to other players stuff they want but wont fetch.
Then misson and/ or mine as a plus.
Markets provide afk keyboard cash imo , they pay when u dont play.
Then take time to address the mine vs misson , do your skills mean you have a strength towards which way of life.
I hate mining ...but missons can be repetitive and only AFK IF you have the skills and dont mind losing a potential of 5m in drones if it goes bad :)
Sentrys rox imo as does DOM.
EDIT PS TRY THIS ....its got to give u a clue about mining : http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1020825 The Complete Miner's Guide - v3.0 Extended Edition [PDF, 11-03-09]

Darius,
Nullsec mining will make you much more than missions will in Empire. I've done it. You just have to have the skills and the right rocks, and the right kind of setup. It's not hard to figure out once you are out there doing it.
I believe Akita T's comment was specifically in reference to Empire Mining vs. Empire Missions, and there she is accurate. In Empire, L4 missions are the best isk/hour.

If you're talking SOLO WORK OR DUAL BOXING, then yes, you will be making more ISK/hour running L4 missions than solo-mining or dual-box mining in deep 0.0 without a fleet, outside of a mining op.
If you're talking dual-boxed L4 missions vs dual-boxed Hulk miner in a well-organized mining op in deep 0.0, then after all gang splits and taxes I'd say it's about even. But you can dual-box L4s all alone and risk-free, while dual-boxing in that organized mining op depends on others too, and it is nearly mandatory to be part of a half-decent corp/alliance in order to be able to get into that situation in the first place. Not that it's impossible or anything, but it's not a "log in or log out whenever the hell you like" thing.
If you're talking upwards of 3 accounts, then yes, 0.0 mining starts to be better, but only because handling three accounts in missions is problematic (and four, let's just say, I wouldn't want to handle that kind of stress) while handling even 8 hulks in a mining op is somewhat manageable.

Edited by: Clair Bear on 14/05/2009 21:23:54 Other factors to consider. "Good" ores are limited in 0.0, at least in systems with a refining station. Anything more impressive than solo mining will exhaust those resources long before downtime.
Missions are infinite.
Consider the tax your 0.0 station levies, the cost in fuel to get your goods to empire and potential losses to roaming gangs (including those dropping by from w-space) and there aren't many situations where 0.0 mining is going to beat L4 mission running over the long haul.
p.s. the list of "good" missions is missing "Pirate Invasion." With enough alts rolling missions you can have your pick of which missions to run. You don't ever have to do the awful ones. Also, if you don't blitz them Recon 1 and 2 spawn something like 25M worth of battleships.
I'd say for 1-3 accounts missioning is your best bet. For more than that mining becomes ever more attractive.
And in summary, bigger blobs are the answer. Now what was the question? |

Let's put it this way... right now, at perfect refine and reasonable mineral prices (which you are not guaranteed to get), Ark still comes at under 500 ISK/m^3 on average. Bist, and it's under 400 ISK/m^3. Crok, not even 300 ISK/m^3. So, let's say you are somehow LUCKY enough to get only Ark, and somehow mine it in perfect safety, with no interruptions or anything like that, since you are in some alliance that holds some space with truckloads of Ark in the same system they plopped a perfect-refine outpost that's heavily guarded. Of course, I seriously doubt you will be getting less than 10% refine fees in such a place, more like 20%, if not even higher. Realisticaly, you're looking at around 400 ISK/m^3, at best around 450 ISK/m^3. Soloing or dual-boxing it, you'd actually be quite lucky to get over 1000 m^3 per minute per character on average, considering you still have to move the mined ore to the station. Hell, let's be generous and say 1200 m^3 per minute per character on average. All in all, AT BEST, you will be looking at somewhere around 30 mil ISK per hour per account under those ridiculously unrealistic lucky circumstances. Reasonably though, 20 mil ISK per hour per account is a much more feasable number here. Which is easily matched by a L4 mission-runner, not even a very impressive one at that.
Sure, once you get in the fleet bonuses from an Orca/Rorqual commander, and have the operation going smoothly with enough haulers around, the mined amount gets much higher, and the raw income grows proportionately. However, you're not going to keep it all, will you ? It will get split across all other members too, and a portion will be kept for the corp/alliance, and then there's taxes again (either direct or in form of mandatory mineral purchase prices) and so on and so forth... so, no, as a solo/dual account, you won't make more mining in 0.0 than you could make running L4s without another PERSON'S help, and in the reasonable safety of highsec.

not really, although the mission pay is about the same as a combat mission, there are no loot or bounties other than from belt spawns (usually based on the sec status of the system you are in). the ore is special mission ore so you can't sell it. and most of the mining mission sites don't have any other (useful) kinds of ore in them.
if i wanted a low-stress/semi-afk way to farm LP or NPC standings i would consider mining missions, but to make ISK, i would do combat missions.

You will make more money from mission-running than mining, given the application of similar levels of attention and button-pressing.
Don't mine plagioclase, it's not financially sensible. Mine veldspar, since Tritanium is in high demand. You could watch the market, calculate the ISK/m3 of each ore available to mine, or you could just take the advice of those who've run the numbers.
Tanking in a Myrmidon is an entirely different experience to tanking in a Dominix. The Dominix is much larger, so your enemies will miss less and do more damage when they hit. Your ship-mounted weapons will be doing less damage against the enemies, and you'll have a hard time hitting small targets.
Build your drone skills (Drones, Drone Interfacing, then racial drone specialisation), and in a Dominix you'll want to train for T2 sentry drones (eg: Bouncer II, Warden II, Curator II, Garde II).

...high sec ice mining with multiple accounts... ...null sec ice mining with multiple accounts... ...high sec ore mining with multiple accounts... ...null sec ore mining with multiple accounts... ...market trading... ...POS chains... ...investments in "IPO's"... ...exploration... ..."plex'ing"... ...battleship production... ...now, even sleeper farming... ...the list goes on and on and on...
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, has even come close to the isk I make running level 4's with only two accounts in my spare time on weekends.

Before the introduction of rigs (which made mission-running so trivially easy it's not even funny) and before the whole "hey, let's remove cheap NPC-provided tritanium sources" fiasco, 0.0 mining was a serious (and quite profitable) contender even for a solo pilot. Hell, LOWSEC mining was actually decent too ! But... well... not anymore.

Well, since this my alt char. Yes, I can manage earn billion isk per week with just 3 char and run solo dual account. Prefer have 2 or 3 agent per char because you can keep cycle decline mission once every 4 hour for certain mission from agents you able to get. These might take awhile in like 2-3 day for certain missions you want to hold before accept all misisons. Once you able to get all mission then easy to farm 4-6 mission for one week as long you know when to turn in before expire missions. As for myself, I can hold 12 agents with specify missions and all I need to grind missions including looting and salvage for 2 hour during morning and 2-3 hour during night everyday. One week, surprise to see what you have ?
P.S. LP not including since I only use LP for something I want to buy instead buy something from contracts. BTW, you need to find out which agents and location. *hint: not in caldari space because I knew tons mission runners there. :p
