Looking at the recent outcries in regard to the module activation delays, and the alleged "bugs" (which sounds more like sloppy game design to me) that's come with it...
... It's simply lost on me why another approach wasn't taken. Rather than digging their heads into the cloak-mechanics, they could just have done something as simple as:
Reducing the cycle time of ECM modules and effects. For example, let's say some standard 5-sec cycle.
1. It would make the cloak-trick ineffective, if at all possible (no one cloaks or spot-warps for such a cycle). 2. It would make the feeling of being jammed less distressing, with quicker and more predictable countdowns. 3. It would make using ECM more exciting, with more micro-management and buttons to push (which also deal with alts). 4. It would make the ECM chance-trigger more frequent which means a better spread of results (less "do or die").
From where i am sitting, that's a win-win situation for everyone involved. It's also a very simple and easily balanced implementation. Why on earth did they not look into that? Why didn't they look into existing mechanics and balance to solve an "exploit" rather than focus so hard on finding a "problem" and go hunting for "bugs" that is questionable if they even ever existed. Pardon me if this has been mentioned before, it should have been because it's so bleeding simplistic (easy solution to a minor problem, rather than overhauling both ships and mechanics).
Thanks for your time, game design forumers.

No... 20 seconds is nice because if jam failed then during this 20 seconds target actually can lock something (20 seconds is well enough) and deal some damage or something... ------------------------------------------------- I am envoy from nowhere in nowhere. Edited by: Snooze on 16/05/2009 00:25:05 Mm, fair point.
Just remember the mentioned cycle was only an example.
I'm sure some well balanced middle-ground could be found (half module cycle of effect cycle, or w/e) .
I'm more interested in the broad approach itself and why it was taken. Why a sledgehammer to something that could be tuned with a fine instrument?

It would have been better is they played with the lock mechanic in stead of cloaking.
If you loss lock (through cloaking or any counter ecm) then the ecm effect (or any ew/logistcs/etc) on the targeted ship cancels with no change to module cycles etc.

Agreed mate, messing around with the module activation whilst cloaking screwed up a hell of a lot more 'actual gameplay' than the devs imagined imo. Whilst this is pretty standard it doesn't make it less frustrating. If only I could make as many mistakes in my job sigh...
Whilst as a keen falconer I was initially dismayed at the loss of range to ECM boats, it's actually not that bad and does make the game more fair wrt. ECM.
I think the idea of reduced module duration on ECM is a cracking one for all the reasons you've posted Snooze. Back in the day it was super easy mode to sit back at 250km and slowly wait for your 6 or so locked targets to become unjammed as you pulsed around the edges of the grid.
Certainly willing to give it a patchs worth of time to find out. Better than it is at the moment tbh.

"lock-breaking like the bombs"
I think i would make for some interesting game play although i am not sure how it would affect balance. Sensor boosters would become even more common.
