There are a number, there's also suspicions of those people since it's a convenient cop-out for not having to speak or be on coms but rather being in gang and quite possibly telling all on the enemies coms.

One of my friends is silent.
She doesn't have a problem with vent, and I do not ask her to speak. She does have a voice modulator but we only use that to talk over the phone.
Disabilities should be accommodated and worked around. That person is just as valuable as any other person playing EVE.

I think that the broadcasts would/can be of great assistance to anyone that has a hearing problem.
If your FC is too lazy to use in game facilities (which can actually spare a lot of chat on vent/TS, i.e. "WARP/ALIGN TO WHERE ?") then maybe its time you found some people that are prepared to help you. -- EVE Mobile Skill Planner V3 !! http://evemsp.sourceforge.net/ |

We have a deaf person in my corp. I don't intend to single that person out because really it doesn't matter.
As a CEO and industrialist I COULD sit docked up and relay the instructions in text on fleet chat. Or anyone else for that matter.
It would be great if the fleet commands could be more useful of course and the tagging leaves a lot to be desired, could it be done holding down the right-alt+key instead of going through the sub-menus?
Being deaf shouldn't be a barrier to enjoying the game and being all that you want to and can be, however it's up to CCP to implement more features that make communcation easier without voice chat.

I am pleased to read that you have found another corporation.
For the life of me, I cannot see how your previous corp thought that having orders repeated in the chat window was an undertaking that could not be performed by mere mortals. Perhaps it is because I am used to fleets that are quite international in their makeup, but fleet commands being repeated in chat is a very common thing. A simple delegation at the outset of the operation, really.
Anyway, good luck with your future endeavors.

does EVE support customer macros like other MMORPGs? for example in EQ one could make a keybind that has a whole sentence into a certain channel.

I never really cared for the Vent/TS invasion that's overtaken MMOs. While it is in fact more efficient in groups and raids, or general chatting for that matter, I've always found it to pull you right out of the atmosphere. I typically don't bother talking even if the rest of a group is talking.
I've played since early EQ days, and got along just fine with typing. You also don't have to listen to people talk about stupid ****, or talk like a loud ass in general.
I've always been accustomed to typing things out and reading. It has it's advantages over Voice:
- The chat is there, acts as a log. If you bark an order, it's gone once you're done talking. This usually results in people constantly asking "What did you say?"
- It's less chaotic, as like I said, the chat acts as a log, meaning less chatter overall.
- It's not distracting. Most of the time, people get far too upset over Vent/TS and end up distracting everyone with their non-sense, or having to try and listen to multiple people talking at once.
I never liked it, never will. Some people rely on it too much and it becomes detrimental to progress. Other times, it's used effectively, but I haven't really ever seen it Not abused. in EQ chat was easy to use because, one you could hotkey it and two the game flow allowed for use of text because voice chat was totally impossible during EQ days since broadband didnt exist up until the late EQ years.

really good fc's actually mark their primarys ect. I suffer from 80% hearing loss and i do have trouble understanding some commands. low pitch voices i cannot make out. There are roles even the deaf can do in fleets that do not require instruction from the FC's Logistics is one of em, see a icon go up and you patch that target.

Originally by: Neamus Your last FC is an idiot. Its easily possible to acomodate deaf players using in fleet commands. Warp here, align there, enemy spotted etc etc. Its then just a case of keeping an eye on your screen for the visual indicators.
A good FC should be able to handle this without issue. Just delegate out to a couple of fleet members, one handles fleet commands while the another (preferably a touch typist) types anything that is outside of the commands scope. I dont know for sure but usually our fleets make regular use of the fleet commands, so its quite possible that we have deaf people in fleet.
An FC's job is hard enough as it is, you do not want to overload him more than he already is. If you don't already know this, either you've got a naive view of what being an FC really entails, or you've never been in any decent sized fleets.

This. Unfortunately for the deaf/hard of hearing crowd in eve, Vent/TS will be used in an increasing fashion. This is someone realizing that they have a challenge and overcoming it without making a huge big deal out of it.
And no, I didn't get banned, I got my wrist slapped.

If the FC is incapable of delegating the task out to someone else - as the post you quoted very clearly suggests - then they do come across as being a little bit thick actually.

A as pretty much blind player I can empithize with your current situation.
Several people have made great suggestions for some accomodations.
For an additional $.02 of my advice, tell the FC or another member to bind text macros to the additional function keys on the Logitech G15 keyboard to expidite instructions.
G11 - Attack Primary Target G12 - Align to G13 - Secondary Taget G14 - Warp to first planet CTRL-G11 - Neut Attack Primary Target CTRL-G12 - Concentrate drones attacks on Primary ALT-G11 - Tackle Primary Target
You get the idea, this can vary to your particular fleet style. So instead of having to type "Primary Target Maztor's Dominix", he could just go "G11 maz Domi" Much quicker and alot less typing.
Also look this software over and see if it would do what you need it to.
http://www.filesland.com/companies/DXsoft/CallTTY-TDD-software.html
DXsoft
A program to communicate with phone TTY/TDD devices (Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf) via a sound card, without TTY modem. A simple interface between sound card and phone line or acoustic connection with phone handset are used.Together with "Virtual Audio Cable" software CallTTY can work via Skype Internet-phone, without additional hardware at all.
I hope that helps a little :)
Good luck

I am deaf, too.
At first, after falling for EVE, I intended to go for a industrial career as I already knew of the prevalence of voicecomm in PvP. But I think i fell asleep once too often while mining
So I spent a long time as a mission runner. When this got boring I looked into PvP and it has me now. Fortunately, my corp is really a group of friends who know me and my hearing impediment. When we hunted pirates in low sec, one always relayed orders for me. After joining an ally this was a bit harder. The first ally we were in was very ignorant. They didn't tell me to leave if I couldn't use vent, but no one relayed either. So I could join ops only if one of my corpmates was present. As it was a crappy ally anyway, I couldn't be bothered to X up later and was glad when we left them. The reason I was so enamoured to Foundati0n was, apart from us having been such a kick ass alliance , that there was no question whatsoever that there was always someone who relays orders. Re-Al continues this fine tradition. I may not catch the primaries but I am experienced in the way of EVE warfare nowadays that I mostly anticipate them. Being deaf is of course a disadvantage. But if you know the right people you can still have fun and be effective in PvP. ----------------------------------------- [21:01:41] Shigsy > U MAKED EXPLISION [21:01:43] Shigsy > FROM SHIP |
