The Great Northern War
Our latest full feature film has just been completed thanks to LLeBring.
The premise is the timeline and struggle of the Phoenix Alliance during the first half of the war, this is the first of a two part movie series that will be released by RONA.
It is a tribute to the lives of those lost during the course of this war, and too our brothers in arms.
Please Enjoy

Nice vid. The P-FSQE battle however deserves a video all on its own, it was one of the best battles of the entire conflict, just death and pods everywhere, still gives me goosebumps, it was like jumping into hell.
Well done on the video, one of the best i've ever seen, hope to see more soon!

I eagarly await part ii.
A very well produced video, highlight for me, was the noise of a fleet uncloaking after the 'autopilot disabled' sound.
Nice sectional approach. Good music.

Edited by: Atandros on 09/09/2004 00:08:37 That rocked! I especially liked the bits that introduced the various corps/alliances and their reasons for war - great backgrounds and, in particular, sounds (although in general, I didn't like the music either...especially not Bohemian Rhapsody. ), as well as the station cutscenes. Just watch out for typos and grammar errors in the text (e.g. Jiercho Fraction, soverign, lots of sentences are missing periods), and for storytelling lapses (just one - you explain the motives of every faction, but at one point you mention COD & FU rremoving PA from NAST without telling the viewers what NAST is, thus not explaining a lot).

Its the remix version of Crawling by Linkin Park off of their Re-Animation CD, NOT the Hybrid Theory one
Its spelled funny to i think since its a remix, youd be better off just looking up the cd and pickin it from there

I can't find the words! This is by far the best EVE-video I have ever seen!
The soundtrack and the storyline fitted perfectly and it really tries to tell the story as it really happened. This one is really worthy of getting a place in the EVE-historyarchive.
On a technical note I must say that you have done extremely well! You have elaborated the blending of clips into eachother in a very good and innovative way. This vid must have taken ages to get together.
I'm also honored to see that some clips from my short-videos (NSN-Files) was worthy of being part of this kind of this masterpiece of pure art!
I demand that you make the sequel!
And all of you guys, get off my back. It was only a matter of time before someone would step up and kick my ass, and RONA with LLeBring has now done just that and then some! Amazing job!
Guess I now have to stop making my short-videos and make some 'real' videos in order to try and get 'my' audience back...
//Leafo - have to watch this video again!
(P.s. Someone said that the P-FSQE fight was worthy of it's own video. I made one ages ago, right after the battle. Click on my sig and check out NSN-File #9, not even close to this video but it shows the battle. D.s.)

As usual, my esteemed colleague Leafo has taken most of my words out of my mouth, so I'll try to say something on a bit more of a personal level...
I said a couple of my vids back that LL was one of my inspirations and he's now reminded us all as to why. I've had a lot of conversations with him over the past couple months and he'd say stuff like, "Sel, wait until you see what I'm working on!" or, "I got the most amazing footage tonight!"
Here I am thinking of ways to one-up Leafo and then LL pulls this crap. You bastard! I knew you were doing something special, but this was beyond what I expected.
For me, I think the most interesting aspects are how he blended so many different sequences together. The use of music is excellent and goes a long way to showing the spirit of the PA as a whole and RONA in particular. The PA propaganda machine really has two jewels in Leafo and LL.
Suffice to say, LL, you can expect some major harassment from me in the near future as I start my next series of projects!

Err, tbh, this video is not bad, but i dont think that its "wow". I still prefer the leafo style. But anyway, if its not "wow", its still good. Nice work.

Thank you so much for all of your kind words on the video, Leafo you are and always will be a difficult one to top. There are already sequels in the work, and of course the next month or year or whatever will dictate what comes out of it. The other major project underway is an actual movie, so we are excited to release that in the next 2 to 3 months. (Acting and the animation are going to take a bit). LL has been extreemly pleased with the responses, and you should see a response from him within the next day or two. For those of you who provided Mirrors we appreciate it.

Excellent work LLeBring.
I saw a lot of good stuff in this (technical, camera angles, serious attempts at impartiality).
Storywise it is a bit thin on the butter, so to speak. For those that have carefully kept up with the war they can easily fill in all the blanks but for those that are not familiar, it's a bit hollow.
As I'm more partial to storytelling, I'll grant this video the #2 spot on good videos released recently, after the Farlon Incident (which scores higher in storytelling).

This is without a doubt the best EVE movie I've ever seen. It sets the standard by which all future movies will be judged and really gives us amatuer movie makers something to aspire too.
Some questions for LL if you can answer them.
1) What was the total production time from "idea" to "completion".
2) Which software did you use to assemble the movie? Adobe Premeire or something else?
3) How did you do that "picture in a picture"????????
All in all its simply the best. What else can be said. The music works perfectly. The transitions and transparencies are brillant.

1)Total production time was in the region of 2-3 months on and off but he has been working on it for a long time now.
2) Yep he uses Adobe Premier and virtual dub but i dont think he used it on this one to keep the quality so high

Two ways to do this in Premiere as I see it (surely there's more ways).
Either you just work with "opacity" (keying it) of each clip to make them shine trough eachother or you use the video-effect "blend" and blend the clips into eachother.

I dont mean to be a arse..(no honestly, I dont!), and please don't see this as biased critism or me trying to start a flame war or whatever, but I didn't think it was that great at all.
Maybe reading everyone elses high praise while waiting for the download to finish kinda built it up too much for me.
While LLeBring's skills at producing and editing is undeniably top class and introducing things like insets (afaik the first in a eve vid) and his introduction of everyone involved was fairly good, I feel the quality and richness of the battles and fighting was a bit poor.
I like to see a story in pictures rather than have to read a story on screen. A bit too much emphasis on the timeline, station flybys, map cut scenes, character pics and writing, and too little fireworks and explosions. I also never really could tell from the battle scenes who was fighting who, where or who won.
I personally thought Body Counts movie of their war against EV was better at doing this, and I certainly enjoyed it more. I don't know if Phonix movie showing the fight in XZH-4X m0o v Norad and a few ganks along the way has made it to eve-o forums, but the content in that was very good and clear and discriptive without too much writing to tell the story for it.
This was a bit more like a comic book with music.
Well thats my 2 cents worth. Sorry if any are offended.

Edited by: Shia Tia on 09/09/2004 17:56:45 Edited by: Shia Tia on 09/09/2004 17:19:14 Well done, simply put, CCP should give you a free month for the marketing value of this movie.
Nice critique by the moo guy. Albeit, I believe the difference here is this movie was trying to tell a story without too much propaganda. The BDCI flic was more intended to be propaganda (thus the large number of 7-8 vs 1-3 people ganks).
I do have one small issue. You should include the titles, authors of the music you are using in your credits. It is probably a copyright infringment to not pay for their use, but I'm sure nobody cares. It is definitely an intellectual property issue to not include at least include them in the credits. Plus, I'm going crazy trying to figure out the one 'Hans Zimmer' like song, someone said it was from the "Tears of the Sun" soundtrack. I can't seem to figure out which song it is from the web. Anyone?
Did I see a line flash 'Unicor leaves the Northern front'? When did this happen?

Excellent job. Best game-based movie I've seen to date
I'll bust out the tent and camp the lines for the sequel!

I must say that with all the enemies set against you and the incredible losses on both sides; if I were a member of your alliance I would be very proud of your achievements and your ability to hold your head high and make such awesome propaganda moves as this film. Most excellent work my friend! Stand your ground and hold fast I do believe that in the long run that such staunch defiance of your enemies will prove to lift you to the heights of victory in the long run.
Good Show!

Well tbh mate, I think it was more of a Documentry of the Events that have transpired since the start of the war, which I thikn is its point....
It is unbiased (mostly) Ive been paying close attention to whats been going on with the war, be it with my own involvement, word of mouth or reading the forum (laff)
And i must admit, this is probably the best vid i have seen yet, not because of the content, ie the fighting, im not too bothered about that... i know what they look like, ive probably seen more fleet engagements than half of the people replying to this thread. So i enjoyed the commentary more tbh. But everyone has a different opinion.
Also the sheer time and effort it must of taken to put this all together.
So I have to say it: Kudos LL i thouroughly enjoyed that, hope to see more Sass Arcane Technologies |

On Val's comment, I think most movies made in eve are either high action or high RP/story. Its nice to see a change of pace from all the gank films, even though they are a bit more fast paced than this. The editing in this movie is top notch and is undisputably the most advanced.
While it is a general overview of the events going on for those involved in them, most people in eve don't know what is going on or what has happened in the north so far. It was fairly bias free so it would be a documentary from the PA perspective.
It could have done with some better music, for some reason I dont think either of the two songs fit the sci-fi theme very well.. most songs with vocals don't. Try epic orchastrated stuff or some trancy sci-fi techno.
In terms of editing quality and informational content there isn't a better movie out there, for action and mood I would say there are a few movies out there that I would rate higher.
Good job LL, it must of taken a long time to do this. _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. "Can I be a consultant for EVE II?" - WhiteDwarf |

This is possibly the greatest, most inspiring vid I have ever seen, not just of eve, but of any game. Being a member of the PA it really made me want to get out there and fight, so I just might
Utterly awesome movie though, I eagerly await the next.

Well being that I was never in the northern war, doesn't mean I never knew what was going on.
I believe this is the greatest movie ever made for eve, an I don't know if you guys watch other demos an videos from other mmorpgs, even they have some good ones, but this is by far the best for EVE Online, an if eve ever wanted to do RP with it, or a story from it, or anything that's it right there.
I honestly almost cried when then queen song started playing because I was like omg this is kickass.
I've watched it 3 times now.
Great Job.

Thank you very much for the kudos, Val, and I'm sure LL appreciates your honest appraisal of his work. A little criticism is always a good thing and keeps one's feet on the ground.
Still, this is a prime example of something I was talking to Leafo about earlier: I'd urge people to refrain from making too many comparisons with other people's work. Many of us tend to have a different approach to film making and personal taste plays a large part in any audience's reception of a product. It's better to try to judge something like this on its own merits. Not easy, I know, but worth a try.
Originally by: Shia Tia Nice critique by the moo guy. Albeit, I believe the difference here is this movie was trying to tell a story without too much propaganda. The BDCI flic was more intended to be propaganda (thus the large number of 7-8 vs 1-3 people ganks).
Shia, my last movie wasn't really intended as "propaganda". I simply chose to tell the story in a certain way and used the footage best suited for that. Still, I can see how some might interpret it that way and that's fine too.
The bottom line is that what LL has done here is push the technical limits of EVE film making to the edge. It's up to the rest of us to raise the bar again and keep people entertained. Personally, I love all this. I mean, really, what other game lends itself so easily to such epic productions? -

From a neutral propective, i must say that is one of the best film clips i've seen come from EvE.
No real bias in it, and very well laid out. Excellent work and a credit to the time and effort put into from those who contributed.
I can't wait to see the second part of it :)

Hi guys, and sorry for the late reply but have had some serious issues as of late. I was recently a victim of identity theft and as such had to cancel all credit cards and subsequently bills made on those credit cards. Replacement cards are on the way and I reckon it will be at least another 4-5 business days before I see a new card for which I always put EVE-Online on.
All this took place while I was in the process of moving to NY Stateà.. Sooooo quite a hassle and not a very fun experience.
IÆve read the boards today as I just recently just got broadband once again.
/thanks Time Warner (RoadRunner) /never looks at Comcast again
First off, the responses. Wow!!! Absolutely amazing, I canÆt say how grateful I am to all of you who have taken the time to download this movie and show huge support for it. Seriously, I know we have tons of critics in EVE, but the last thing I wanted was for it to turn into a flame fest. Thank you so much again, it means a lot especially putting this much time into it. I am glad that those who are considered my enemies in-game didnÆt take this opportunity to flame me or the vid. For that I am very thankful and thankful to all of you who watched it and liked it.
I tried to make the movie as unbiased as possible. BUTà. It does happen and the only way I can describe the biasness is by this statement.
I am on one side of a fence, looking over and doing the best I can to make it as unbiased as possible. But the things I know best, are the ones in front of me and that pretty much means that there will be a slight lean towards the PAÆs view.
However I must say that this view is still better then someone who is not involved in the conflict and has to subsequently look over both fences.
People asked some questions and I have some answers to them.
Average time it took make the movie was 2 months. It sprung from the idea of Robey approaching me with an idea to do a movie based on the war in a ôtimelineö format. From that point the ideas sprang up. 90% of the editing such as the flying videos, beveled vids, the moving of images and opacity levels are all pretty much done on the fly.
Basically I listen to the music, watch the video and see if I can come up with creative ideas. Completion time was about 3 weeks ago. The MS Servers were down so we couldnÆt host it.
The software used was the following: Adobe Premiere Virtualdub Fraps (but of course) EVE exStuffExplorer (some program to convert .ogg files to wav) forget the name, it was shareware though. Windows Movie Maker (only to do the final encoding)
The Timeline bits, the fictitious battle (the ôtransmission failedö part), the 4 vids at once part, and the video on video (PiP as some have stated) were all painstakingly put together one by one and took the longest. Hard stuff let me tell you.
The timeline bits and fictitious battle were especially hard. The battle sequence was made by taking each individual sound file and subsequently placing them on a timeline and in an order to create what sounds like a battle. Pain in the ass. ThatÆs all IÆll say.
Premiere was used for all of the video. 100% nothing else. Every image, video, movement was all created using or manipulating some part of Premiere to get the desired effect.
All fraps footage was put into virtual dub where the video was then speeded up (FPS wise) to a desired rate (25-30-40 FPS). It was then saved as an uncompressed vid file to save quality and then thrown into Premiere when I needed it.
ALL of the sound effects came from EVE, even the opening music. All were extracted using the EVE exStuffExplorer and then converted from .ogg to .wav format.
Windows Movie Maker is used to encode the vid. Yes I know there is DiVX. To be frank though, I cannot get any sort of descent quality out of DiVX when encoding EVE videos. Everything else DiVX rocks, but for EVE vidsà just aint workin out for me.
Oh and the picture in picture part. That is not actually picture in picture, although the first one makes it seem that way. It is in fact another vid told to do the following -Zoom in -Change size (small) -Change current entry position to new one -Bevel -Add drop shadow -Change size (larger) -Fade out
ThatÆs extremely watered down. But thatÆs how it does it basically.
CanÆt think of anymore answers atm. I am too overwhelmed about the responses. If you post more qÆs æll try to respond.
Timeline images from Premiere can be found here. This does not include the # of audio layers for the fictitious battle sequence ( I canÆt fit that into a screenshot)
http://simple.ronacorp.com/images/postings/part1.jpg http://simple.ronacorp.com/images/postings/part2.jpg
As youÆll see, there are instances where there are as many as 5 vids running simultaneously. Some with multiple image files and title sequences.

You can tell it took several months to make this. I must say as someone who makes amatuer movies five hours is too long for me. I have nothing but praise for LL this is quite an achievement.
I'd like more details on the "picture in picture" and how exactly it was done. I'm still learning Premeire and haven't seen that type of option yet. It certainly looks time consuming and painstaking.
Great work LL I'm very impressed. You've set a high benchmark for us to try and match. Well done!

Pretty simple with Premiere. It is done by imposing a video higher on the timeline, so in effect you're stacking them. It'll take awhile to render though unless you've got a card (eg Canopus DVStorm) to do it real time.

There is also an ready effect in premiere pro 1.5 atleast, not sure on the standard version, which will do a pic in pic at 25% the screensize which will pan from left to right, top to bottom and so forth. If you want to one up the standard p-in-p in one corner. Haven't had time to check the vid yet since I'm at the summerhouse right now. Other than that you could also use pics almost in the same way that you can use channels in layers to do layermasks and have parts of video shine through, put some moving video into your title texts for example or so forth. No time to write more, P.pro is a great tool though, I'm right now struggling to get 5.1 EVE recorded so that I could properly mix an AC3 5.1 track for a video, if I get it to work I'm sure you'll hear more about it. ________________________________

to the creators of this wonderfull movie:
i had created a video a couple months ago with this title, normaly i would be upset that it was used again, but i would like to say you have created a masterpeice that can not be rivaled, the movie you have created should be placed on a mantel above the rest. I enjoy the timeline as it is very accurate and can not wait to see the ending, allthough i think to end this video it would require the end of the Northern war which i do not see comeing for awhile. i would like to thank you for the time and effort you put into this video for eve fans around the world to enjoy.

LLeBring, absolutely fabulous movie!!
If you remember, I told you a while back that you had a knack for this kinda thing and should make it a career. This movie makes me believe it even more.
You should really consider taking your creative talents to the next level, perhaps film director/editor.
I can see you giving Speilberg and Lucas a run for their money in a few years :)

I only wish I had a tenth of that talent it took to make this. The vids were good, the music selection was good, the story was good, but the final product was just amazing. ---

In premiere one can use layers of movies and resize framesize.. Gues thats what was done. resize one and add it as a top layer
Seen it now, brilliant movie indeed
Loved the station flyby scenes. Would like to see more of that kind of footage. The zoomed out scenes get kinda tiresome after a while. We see these endless lines on missiles flying at the smartbombed Battleship in every vid.
great work on the story telling, looking forward to the next vid

Just wanted to thank those who took the time to download the vid, those who gave their praise of it, and most importantly, those who looked beyond in-game politics to give their true thoughts on the video.
Quite honestly I am completely in shock of all the support for this video and would kiss you all if I could
So guess what i'm saying here is thank you. From the evemails to the support on the forums, your words truly meant a great deal and i've read them all. Thank you for all your kind words and let's keep those vids rollin.

Btw Rona signatures are less than 500 pixels too big (over 30.000 pixels).
You guys should resize them ASAP so we don't lose more posters on the forums due to warning count.
Again, good job with the movie LLe.

Edited by: Giordano Bruno on 10/11/2004 05:36:14 I have to say this is one of the best vids I've ever seen, I love how it unfolds.
Question: Any chance of getting the score list, specifically the piece that begins at 3:25, after Evolution Enter The War. That has to be one of the most beautiful pieces I've heard in my life and nothing could have fit any better.
As for the Evanescence and Queen... ehh. Especially seeing as how the Queen started when RONA enters the war... that is a little propaganda-ish, but like I've read, all our tastes are our own, some people cry when they hear queen, some shuter at Evanescence. It's all a matter of taste. I just look forward to some serious Techno/Trance/Industrial vids of the same quality as well as some more orchestrated stuff, seperate from the techno, ya know like that second tune at 3:25 Hans Zimmer-ish, like Gladiator, Braveheart, Time Machine, Platoon that sort of romantic stuff gives me a warm fuzzy feeling down there... uh, damn, just listened to it again!
/me cleans his Minnie Briefs
Excellent job LL, now lets get that score, I been lookin for that tune for 3 days now!

Although the time line has holes (Unicor left before curse officially joined, and Curse was with you a little before Evol got in on things) that was the single best Fraps complilation of all time. I am awestruck. Zelota you pidgeon, this is what a great fraps compilation looks like.

actually, CA officially joined about 1 month into the Northern War, Unofficially it was about 1 month two weeks. which puts Unicor actually leaving the "Theater" after CA joined. Trust me, and Evol was there before CA got inolved and heavily as well I might add. This was also at the time when m0o took a 'slight' break the first time from Venal, and then immediatly high tailed their asses right back up once the fighting ensued once more.
TY for the compliments though, but I doubt those involved would say the timeline was otherwise.

actually, CA officially joined about 1 month into the Northern War, Unofficially it was about 1 month two weeks. which puts Unicor actually leaving the "Theater" after CA joined. Trust me, and Evol was there before CA got inolved and heavily as well I might add. Actually the timeline is off a bit. Evolution went to war with PA before FU/COD. I know this for a fact because FU assembled a force and headed to BKG to HELP PA get rid of EVOL. The next day or two is when FU/COD and PA went to war with eachother.
P.S. Notfer...what the hell you doing in CELES...remind me to ***** slap you when I get online.

This movie is really awesome in terms of foreplay + action + general nice graphics/animation to look at :)
Really gets the blood boiling, makes me want to convert from humble miner to not so humble fighter

Oh man, you have some really really nice skills going there, this is by far, so loads by far THE best EVE video I have ever seen, and I am pretty sure it will take a long time to top it.
The way the movie was done just gave me the chills/goose bumps with the sounds, music going so fine with the climatic rising, then slowing down just to rise again.
It is breathtaking and if you arent learning in this art then I think you better go and do it now, because I think you will have to be damn good in what you do if you excel in anything other than editing and making movies, I can put it in English words well enough but you dude rock at what you do, like really.
Now lets see you post a real life film for us in few months, a hollywood one
But since you're enemy, die bastard die Spawn of the Devil

I wasn't going to make the second half due to me no longer being personally involved. However in lue of recent events, seems i've been thrust right back into it
Omniwar your comments mean a lot, especially coming from you, an enemy. In fact from all who have posted.
The other halves will almost certainly be made, in due time of course. May we all have fun and inspire the next.

Actually their history is explained in the vid, however I classified this attack as a seperate entity then the first due to reasons / goals. Saying "Evolution declare war" wasn't stating a first / second, just a generalization for those who don't know or have heard of little history of the north.
It said "Evolution Declare War" yet it explains a history which began before the Northern War and wasn't stating exactly when. Notice most of the other decs have dates on them, whereas Evols do not.
Remember I was there for all of it

we've actually got a really good vid that hasn't been released, that KIAHicks made, I think it's amazing, and really original. It's a bit old now, but I tihnk we should bug him to release it cause it's as good as LL's imo :) ---

I still think this one is the best done yet. The new one by LL is better in some areas, but suffers from worse combat footage and a storyline that isn't based on real in-game event (as stated in the thread, anyway). Because of that, the old one rocks. It in turn suffers from a lack of conclusion, though. Still, simple an awesome vid.
