Great troll. Simultaneously brings out the griefer and defensiveness in everything; general enough to make the casual reader offended.

People form a psychological bond with any diversion that they spend a lot of time/cash on...football teams, games, etc...the problem with eve forums is that some players have developed the same psychological bond with eve that they have with their job, or even their family.
As an example...4 people lost their lives yesterday in Scotland and Northern Ireland because Rangers won the Scottish Premier League...eve fanbois are not at that level...yet. (And yes I know that the Rangers/Celtic football thing is a sectarian war by proxy).

It's the nature of EVE that makes it so.
EVE has a steep learning curve and it is a living breating world that requires losers, for there to be winners, in almost every single activity that you can engage in (more people should learn how to win by having fun, even tho they're "losing" but that's another thread ).
Most people think they know how things work after a few weeks and then run to the forums to omgwtfwhine about how they got killed auto-piloting through low-sec and how the game shouldn't even allow you to go into low-sec the first 6 years.
People here get defensive, yes. They have every reason to tho. There's not a single MMO out there that hasn't been watered down to appeal to the broadest possible audience, except EVE.
EVE is a niche MMO. It is EVE exactly because it is a niche MMO, and it is thriving because it is EVE. Simple as that.
That's not to say EVE can't be made more appealing to players. CCP are working hard to ease people into the world of EVE and lower the barrier to entry, and they are doing well I think.
The problem is just that most new players who come here and complain/suggest/whine are either a) Not going to enjoy EVE in the long run unless it changes into something that the current player-base does not want, b) Not aware of the deeper impact their suggestions would have on a game that is almost 100% player-driven.
( ...oh yeah, and paragraphs, lots of people don't ****ing use paragraphs when they post crap. It ****es people off ).

I totally agree with the OP. These forums are only marginally useful for any type of civil discussion, or heaven forbid a place to find factual information. You have to wade through so much nonsense to find the scattered bits of goodness that it's barely worth the trouble.
If CCP would actually moderate these forums things might change. Alas, it seems they're either unable/unwilling to do so. |

I see your point, but statistically, I suspect that the ratio of f#^k-tards to decent, helpful people is about exactly the same as in real life. I find that 90% of the people on Earth are morons, while 10% are okay. Eve forums have no more than 90% unhelpful trolls -- by my count. I like to think I'm one of the talented tenth. Good luck

1 Long term EVE players tend to be arrogant
2 Most stuff that is suggested is really a request for a self serving balance change
4 Forums are fun

it's really a credit to CCP just how closely Eve models real life (if real life had starships etc).

An interesting choice of example (or blatant lie, depending on spin), seeing as Guild Wars doesn't have official forums at all.
And to the OP: As others have suggested, the way a post is written has a huge influence on the kind of replies it will get. For example, contrast the following two ways to make a post about losing a lot of your total assets by flying an untanked Badger into lowsec:
Example A: WTF is wrong with people in this game??!!!??? Some griefer with no lif in his fat mothers basement violenced my boat. All my stuff blew up and now I only have an ibis. Ban him, he haxxored the gate in Rancer to kill me and I wasn't flagged for pvp.
Example B: Hi, new player here with a couple of questions. I had to move some stuff because I was switching to a better agent. I put all my stuff into a Badger, it fit in there with a couple of cargo expanders. I set my autopilot to system X, but flew manually since the autopilot puts you so far from the gate, which I think is a bit of a pain. Unfortunately, when I got to Rancer, a couple of guys in cruisers blew up my badger and I lost all my stuff. What can I do to avoid that happening?
The first one will be met with utter contempt. And rightfully so. It shows no attempt to understand the philosophy of the game, and an unhealthy dose of outrage at people using valid game mechanics.
The second version, while it will almost certainly still be met with some sarcastic replies, will equally certainly be met with instructions on how to use the map to avoid dangerous systems, setting the autopilot to stay in highsec when possibly, tanking a hauler, not putting all your eggs in one basket, and the golden rule of Eve: Don't fly what you can't afford to lose.
Finally, due to the distribution of forum users in comparison to the general game population: Yes, you do get the loudest squeaking wheels here, that goes both for the "change this to suit me" crowd and the "you don't get Eve, go back to warcraft" crowd. The vast, silent majority just don't give a damn about the forums.

That should policy should also be in effect on the original post. No constructive content in post -> Delete. People get sick and tired of the same questions asked over and over because people don't have the willpower to search or browse. That's when flaming arise.
Kinda like this thread.
So go away.
