Is there a thread where people drop names on known scammers? If not we should make 1...for the sake of punching a toon name in to the forum search and have the thread "Known Scammers" pop up.
I know it sounds impractical due to scammers usually being throw-away alts, but if we could get a large number contributing then within minutes of a scam the name will be dropped in and people will make a habit of doing a name-search b4 dealing. It would reduce the success rate of scammers considerably and eventually remove all but the most determined.
Just an idea

When is someone a 'known' scammer? Does someone who disappeared count as a 'known' scammer? Is anyone who doesn't do exactly what was promised a 'known' scammer?

The fact that cosmoray is on that list illustrates my point nicely. I guess vigilante justice counts as scamming too.

Did you note where it says disputed? It provides evidence and allows a prospective investor to read up on the situation and make their own determination. It should never be used as a binding document, just a point of reference on characters flagged for shady behavior. |

Let's change the context to a list of possible paedophiles in EVE. Slightly different story then?

I did note where it says disputed. I said it 'illustrates' my point. The cosmoray case was high-profile and heavily debated on the forums. There might be similar cases with a lower profile where no such debate was sparked.
Most of the 'proof' in that thread is player Y claiming that player X did this-or-that. That's useless, for all you know Y is the scammer trying to make someone else look bad.

If you don't use it as a point of reference, that's fine. But it's almost impossible to 'prove' someone is scamming unless it's done through market, contract, or specifically confirmed by the scammer.
The list does the best it can within the paramaters of the game. If you choose to do business with those individuals after reading other peoples testimonies, then that is your risk to take. I wouldn't determine EBANK loans off that list however I definitely do use the list as a point of reference and make a judgement call based on the 'proof' provided.
It's no different to EBAY feedback except it's a list of people who have recieved negative comments. |

I didn't even know I had made it on to the thieves of Eve list.
For those who are skeptical of me I do admit scamming a known scammer.
Summary:
1. I invested 500M in Xabier (big mistake) 2. Evn7289 scammed large amount of cash from forum with Xabier help (both in same corp/alliance) 3. Evn7289 declared an ALT in his thread 4. Xabier and Evn7289 declared scams. 5. I managed to scam my initial investment in Xabier back off Evn7289 ALT. 6. I offered abitration to Evn7289 ALT via mine and his API audit. If he was innocent I would repay 110% of proceeds 7. Offer was refused
Make up your own mind if you think I am a scammer. If you believe I am don't invest in my current or any future businesses.
edit: I also missed the threads about arbitration panels (I was busy snowboarding that week)!

Lets make another list that no one will read.
I would be more interested in a list of known roleplayers (worse than pedos).

good list of scammers is pretty much 95% of those offering contracts in most trade hub locals. as for maintaining a list as you mentioned they can just make another throwaway alt or eventually just sell the character.

Is it, did Yoko make a scamming thread? trying to scam people? i think she did. Why ricdic isnt called out as a known scammer i dont know tbh. no matter what he did, it was still a scam, even though he said it was a joke. it was still a scam..

If you can find where Yoko took people's money and then didn't make true on his obligations, you can then call a scam. I never planned on keeping a drop of the isk. I wanted to see if people would invest in a poor business offering, not a scam. Where in that thread did Yoko say it was a scam? |

well, we dont know that do we.... for all i know you could have.. we will never know... fact remains, you still tried to scam... you cant argue that, that you didnt do it for the isk doesnt matter. where does it say that everyone scams for the isk? im well aware that you are worth 10 if not 100 times more than what you could have gotten from the failed attempt. imo you said it pretty clearly when you said it was all a joke, syked.... ie. joke, scam, bait, poorly written and thought through business plan (i just mutilated your grammar etc.)

It was pretty stupid idea tbh.
Using your reasoning, anyone can try to scam and if it fails they will just post "It was an experiment, I just wanted to see if it works! I didn't want to take your money, honestly!" and it will be all ok.

Thought I would add my two cents.
No I do not think cosmoray is a scammer now after reading his words. EDIT: (Make that habitual scammer) But I did have someone come to my thread and tell me my list was worthless because I was leaving off it high profile Market people... in essence discriminating against the little guys. And since there was a long discussion about it anyway... I put it up.

Why will I leave it there? Historical posterity. People might be interested to read about it at some point.

Fitz if you are going to add links about me you need to add the original thread from the Evn7289 ALT, Hapenburg who made the original claim about me.
link
This would explain most of the action but Hapenburg edited most of his posts

For what its worth, having cosmo listed after all that drama sort of makes sense on a list like that, if only for completeness sake.
That being said, you better damn well include the link he highlighted above, since that shows the whole thing in a different light. And yea, I'm pretty sure that was the same guy who scammed you all before getting a half bil removed from his wallet, and not some poor, unfortunate, character transaction gone horribly wrong.
Personally, its "OMG I GOT SCAMMED I WANT TO GET EVEN" that's kept me from investing in anything on the MD boards, since just about everyone has been hit by a goon scam before in one way or another, and I'm afraid whoever I want to invest with will take my isk, and then tell me to "take it up with my corp mate to get a refund".

The example in this thread is cosmoray. I can't think of many bluer chips.
I'm not saying that I think he'd punk one of my investments, but its an example of the thinking that someone would need to go through to punish me for the actions of someone else.

If the contract is for an item you can find in market (aside from say, rigged ships), its a scam. Always. Just block that guy and move along in your life. No need to spew about how that guy is a scammer in local. Just move on with your life.
If its not something you can buy in market, be very careful on price, and volume.
Tada, no need for a fancy list.
