Edited by: Elias Starchaser on 30/05/2009 23:58:28 I just barely earned enough ISK to buy a battlecruiser... and since I doubt I could afford losing one, I figured I better go a step down and just get a plain T1 cruiser instead. I'm a n00b, so please be kind.
I'm trained up to use any Amarr cruiser, no problem. Caldari cruisers are next. I'd have to train more for anything else (which is no problem if there's a superior ship in another faction, it'd only take me a day tops to get any of them at this point).
I'd like to be able to handle some Sleepers in wormhole space, if possible. I also like mining when I run out of more exciting things to do. And I like being able to survive pirate attacks and whatnot. I mostly solo, but occasionally hit wormhole space or 0 sec space with a friend.
EDIT: **Oh, and one more question... would the cheapest battlecruiser still be better than a regular cruiser?**
I'm currently leaning towards the Omen because of it's larger cargo hold, although the Arbitrator sounds kinda fun with all of it's drone capabilities.
Any suggestions?

With insurance you can afford losing any t1 ship. Arby is the only good t1 amarr cruiser, needs a lot of drone skill to work though. I'd go for a harbinger.

For soloing and pvp IMO I think Vexor or Thorax are your best bet. For PVE and wormhole stuff, Caldari is the way to go.

For reference, I now have about 44.5 million ISK. I'd hate to put it all into a ship and then lose the ship, but yes, I was previously considering the Harbinger. I then thought about taking the Prophecy since it'd save me more than 10 million, and then I got feeling really cheap and started looking at cruiser class ships.

If you want something that can take a few hits and still be able to stick around, give the Maller a shot.

Like I said, with insured t1 ships the only cost of a loss is the modules and maybe a tiny bit more for high demand ships. If you do want to get a battlecruiser it better be a harbinger or a drake. Prophecies are cheap for a reason... a huge tank will get you nowhere if you have no damage to back it up.

T1 fit an arbitrator, go get it blown up until you get comfortable flying it. Yes, its not a typical amarr ship, but it will do a damn site better than any other amarr t1 cruiser will at your price/skill range, and until you learn some of the PVP fundamentals, a bigger/better ship is just more liability without leveraging the additional power.

Edited by: Balcura on 31/05/2009 02:30:37 THere are a couple of ships you can use depending on what your doing.
In the Amarr line there are a few choices Omen - good damage, hard to fit without excelent fitting skills, poor tank Maller - fit with small guns, large cap battery and a 1600 plate excelent for level 1 and 2 missions (I used to run level 1 and 2's) Arbi - focus on drones, the ECM bonus is good for PVP and dosen't work in PVE at all (I ran this for level 2's)
Caldari line Moa - don't bother, requires too many skill pts to be useful Caracal - fit with light assaults and a passive tank works nicely
Depends on what you need for the job you have in mind. Bigger isn't always better, each ship has a role and depending on what you want to do some ships do it better then others.

overview of pvp cruisers
minmatar:
Ruppy 180mm ACs + 1600mm RT plate; great buffer for a cruiser and nice dps
Stabber 220mm ACs LSE ambit extensions; cheapest vaga ever, good tackler or training ground if you are planning on flying nano one day
Caldari:
Moa Blasters + LSE; funny ship undervalued but cna get nice dps
Caracal HML + tank; eh dps + speed (if mwd fit) but nothign special, solid... but not special
Blackbird Jammers; usefull in anygang but get used to being primary
Gelente:
Thorax: can get lolz dps (nutrons and 800mm plate) fun ship i hear but once again these usually are highish on the primary list.
Vexor: DRONEZ... versitile ship, fun can be had
Amarr:
Maller: can get nice tank.... thats about it
Arbi: arguably the only really good amarr cruiser (prolly true) but gets respectable buffer (if 1600mm plate fit) and the TDs are nice in small gangs, and gets respectable DPS

Stabber. It's so cheap that, if you insure it, you may actually MAKE money when it blows up.
And it's fast.

The omen is not bad for pvp but your going to need good gunnery and fitting skills to get it working well.

The rupture is one of the best t1 cruisers around. Its competitors are the thorax and vexor.
I personally beleive that the rupture is the best, but my opinion is not completely universal.
That is for pvp. For pve IDK.

For PVE, the Caracal is hands down the best T1 Cruiser. Arbitrator and Vexor can compete and probably pass with decent skills, but Caracal is absolute slaughter for level 2 missions even in the hands of a beginning player.

Edited by: TraininVain on 31/05/2009 09:36:21 Arbitrator, Vexor and Caracal are all very forgiving of low skills and nice for missions.

Don't do this tbh.
Pick one thing and stick with it.
I used to switch around a lot on my first character and what I've found is generally there's not a lot to be gained from having poor skills in everything as opposed to good skills for one thing.
Get an Arbie + some half decent drone skills or an Omen if your gunnery skills are already there (I recall from the other thread they aren't) and then focus on gunnery for your Harbi.

Learn to fly the Arbi. It will make you train drone skills which are needed and used by all races, and drones skills are just so damn useful.

I use a Caracal with the following loadout;
5 Assault Missile Launchers (Sabretooth/Bloodclaw light missiles)
2 large shield extenders Invunrability field I Medium shield booster II (or Em Hardener I) 10 Mn Afterburner
Ballistic Control System Power Diagnostic System
Pretty much all L2 missions are a breeze. Effective HP are nearly 10k (with tech I extenders), so you can take a pounding and still function. Just make sure you have the inv field on while in combat and you'll be fine :)

Ok, I woke up this morning and the moment is here! My skills are all trained, and I have a total of 44.5 million ISK.
I think it's down to getting an Arbitrator, an Omen, or just eating all of my ISK alive and going for a Harbinger. The most I've flown up till now is a destroyer (Cormorant).
Any final advice would be GREATLY appreciated before I make this impulse buy!!! Thanks!

This. And considering how poor the OP is, a Battlecruiser would be plain silly. Looking at the wallet, a player should either know what he can do if he puts it in one/few ships, or the isk should be enough to be able to buy a small fleet of ships. 44mil isk will get a bunch of Arbitrators, I'd say it's a good bet. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

Can the Arbitrator handle sleepers in wormhole space solo?
