Can't even recall what prompted me to look... but I did a search on EVElopedia to see how -they- claim our shields work on ships.
I know the general idea in Star Trek is a field of charged particles somehow (insert Treknobabble) keeps phasers and torpedoes from hurting them.
Then I find the EVE explanation...? Nanobots!
Yeah... they claim everytime we undock, we spray a mist of nanobots out into space. They're held in a cloud around us, and sacrifice themselves to every attack.
Now... I could be spoiled from the years of various sci-fi I've watched/read. But someone could have come up with something a little more creative and plausable.
I'm kinda thinking CCP needs to hire some better writers. Particularly folks who play the game and know the mechanics better. Then we won't have so many BS (not BattleShip) explanations. And we won't have stories that present totally contradictory mechanics (as some of my prior threads have addressed). |

It's quite a bit more creative and plausible than "omg magic forcefields" supported by technobabble. The only problem is the name doesn't really match the description. And even if it wasn't, only rp***s care.

NON of the sci-fi versions of shields is "plausable" ideas.

so put in a petition to rename shields to "point defense". Most of us just care it stops stuff from putting us in a pod.

I think it is quite an original idea, different than most other explanations of shields. |

This is first time I've seen a thread about this. OOPE has had a few threads about how shields would work in real life, but no one has told me how shields work in eve.

So how should they work according to you? |

Nanobots are used for everything in eve pretty much, the camera drones, armour repairers, resistance modules and a bunch of other stuff. When your ship can freely generate huge amounts of them for almost no cost (So negligible energy costs that we don't see it on the cap display, akin to producing a jet can) then I see no reason for them to not be used like this.
Why, you want to use PURE ENERGY AND WILL POWER to stop bullets hitting you? |

as energy fields, this would explain why shield components are called shield emitters, and why certain eve stories explain shields as energy barriers feel free to view shields as clouds of nanobots, but this is how i see shields.

Not that it bothers me but your'e saying star trek got it right and eve got it wrong?

Nanobots are a hair more convincing than the star trek version tbh.
I'm not scientifical but I've read a few good discussion on this and it basically breaks down to "Anything strong enough to stop any significant degree of incoming fire would also fry the crew". |

Considering the science skill for shields has the "hydro" prefix in its name, I for one sure thought shields had something to do with some sort of water particle field. |

Only thing I take issue with is the 'nearly indestructible alloy' gimmick, it's lame. They should use a more reasonable, believable material there. I mean, even if it's really rare stuff, you'd have *someone* plating a ship with it. |

Umm... We're talking about SHIELDS... On SPACE SHIPS that go FASTER THAN LIGHT.... This stuff isn't supposed to be "believable" |

Shields is a common Sci Fi term. Most often it refers to some kind of energy barrier.
Now - as to how that might really work - there was a show on the History Channel about the science of Star Trek which noted that you could use a plasma field to create a barrier. This isn't the red hot melt you in an instant type of plasma but - real world plasma - that can be shaped using a type of field, possibly magnetic effecting a charged plasma, that I don't recall. The way this real life plasma field works is that it absorbs energy from the things hitting it rather than deflecting them. Of course - the amount of plasma they can generate and shape now was just enough for a little demo and not anything that would be in practical use for something the size of a ship in the foreseeable future.
Magnetism is often described as the controlling field that shapes the force fields of Sci Fi.
But the thing is - since we've only had powered flight for 106 years - several hundred or thousand years in the future there's no telling what they might have. They've only recently discovered that dark energy is actually more important to the galaxy than dark matter - and they've not known about that for very long either.
Was it Larry Niven who said that at some level Magic becomes indistinguishable from science (or something like that)?
Ridiculing any particular idea is what is ridiculous - which isn't to say that you can't criticize it.
Now ... as for myself ... I prefer the energy field version of shields to nanobots simply because a nanobot is a discrete object that would have to be held in place by some force field or it would continue on it's own vector when the ship changed course. Which could be done - but - if you're going to use a force field to control the nanobots - then just having the force field itself would be simpler.

Shield emitter emits nano bots?
Why would an 'energy field' (wtf is an energy field anyway) stop a bullet? And using a magnetic/electric field to hold some nanobots in place arround the ship is way easier than trying to use it to stop something uncharged and non-magnetic.

Shield
Now think millions of miniature metal things like these, held together around your ship. More plausable then energy stopping a projectile. |

to make nanobots a effective shield, they must be so numerous and close to the other nanobots, that we should be able to see the shields.

and look at the show info of the capital shield emitter, it clearly says: "a modular unit disigned to create a massive electro magnetic shield around capital ships.
it says nothing about nanobots.
