This,
EVE will live where all of SOE's games fail because of this. I played EQ and SWG (SWG from day 2 since day 1 the logon server died)
Sony can ruin anything. They make crap. Their gaming philosophy has never evolved beyond the view that the players are privileged to be in "their worlds". When EQ was the only game in town they could get away with that crap. These days they are suffering for it.
At this point Sony would have to come to my door, beg and pay me to play in their epic fail.
I heard about the matrix, then I heard it was Sony, I knew it would suck, all rumors of the game confirmed suck and I'm flatly shocked that it lived this long. Good riddance.

If you want to try something interesting. Take a look at Megawars III. I ran across this website the other day. I have always felt that Megawars was a first iteration of EVE. The new version is pretty close to the old one even though I miss my dot matrix line printer spitting out the results every time I launch a Torp.

MxO was fun when Monolith ran it, when it went over to SOE and lost live events and such it went way downhill.

If a modern day MMO came out like 'Dark Ages' (not DAoC fyi) with an awesome hand to hand combat class that actually "felt" fun to play. I'd probably be all over that. Though I can never break away from EvE as I always come back to it.
Deoch 16 here in Dark Ages, that was such an epic game. So simple yet so fun. If not for the incredible grind and insane difficulty of leveling 1-99 these days I might still go play it just for the memories. Its funny that you should mention it as while reading this thread I was thinking how I was surprised any game could die while a game like Dark Ages manages to hold on.

I didn't bother going to Starstrider, because I was getting burned out on the game itself.
From Bria as well, did fly some on Starsider though, near the end before i finally quit and came here. |

Its been teetering on the edge for so long now. Shame because its probably one of the most epic games to be developed but devs just can't deliver content quit enough. |

Last time they offered a 'please please come back' reactivation, I logged into Bria and it was a ghost town...I remember when even the player cities would have firefights.

Sony kills whatever it touches. It just takes a while. They have little clue how to keep their player base happy which is the number one thing you have to do in order to keep any type of MMO game going. Until they figure that out, most of their MMOs will crash and burn.
I have high hopes for JG:Evo and Infinity: The quest for Earth. JG will go on forever, as the makers of the game aren't in it for the population base. Infinity, if it ever goes live, looks like it may rival Eve in some respects. The big issue with it is that its not being run by a company, just a guy. That means building the game takes forever. People have already dubbed it vaporware, but it isn't.
WoW will go on for as long as Blizzard wants it to. Its a juggernaut. Blizzard is very very good about keeping their player base happy AND finding new players. Blizzard does everything right that Sony does so very wrong.
FFIV is supposed to come out next year, but like Sony, Square-Enix fails when it comes to keeping players happy. If they learned their lesson, it will do well. If not, WoW will just crush it.
Lord of the Rings is just WoW-lite, and you might as well just play WoW given the option. It'll fail within 24 months.

Edited by: Sosus Red on 13/06/2009 06:11:47 Matrix Online was actually quite fun. I played for about two months. Fun times...for about two months then it got very repetitive.
SOE is not a bad company. Although I do not currently play any of their games, I did play SWG and EQ2 as well. Eve was my first MMO and still offers more variety than anything else out there ATM. Plus CCP is a nice company. I went to the first SWG fan fest and I also went to Eve Fan fest. Looking at how both companies interact with their fans and was very telling. SOE is part of a Global Mega Corp and thus is a bit more stuffy, so to speak. CCP is much more laid back.
They are also a client of mine, or more specifically, my employer. |

Monolith only ran the game for like one month then sold it to Sony. There were still live events when Sony owned it. |

I shudder to think of any end-of-the-world events that Oveur may dream up if EVE ever goes. I figure they won't announce it and just all of a sudden the devs will go on a rampage for a week terrorizing and griefing every player into nothingness and then boom, no more servers. It shall be epic. |

Haha no ****. I can't believe someone else here has played it. I'm Doech 7 myself. Good times indeed. I actually went back to the game a few times; Deoch 22~24, Deoch whatever (2yrs ago). It's not the same as it used to be, for sure. I only got to 99 once but I enjoyed the game thoroughly. Running that place below House Macabre and the newer ocean area was fun. Shadowbane is also pulling the plug in july. Its too bad, the game was overly-ambitious imo. It failed to follow through on many of the gameplay pilars it began to implament. Like guild cities was awesome and city sieges sounded great but just wasnt done right. The game was supposed to be completely PVP centered but the PVP system they had just didn't work.
I do admit it was an awesome first month though! Canceled after that becuase there was literally nothing else to do (no high level pve content and flawed pvp system) |

I've never played the online version of The Matrix, but from what I've seen on youtube videos, I'm not at all surprised. It was a little difficult finding MxO videos because so few exist, but here are the better ones
Video 1 (this guy has worse aim than storm troopers) Video 2 (strange that they should use Pirates of the Caribbean theme music for MxO)

More than one person here thinks LOTRO will fail.
Speaking as a man who just logged in and thoroughly enjoyed simply walking through this beautiful landscape and then went fishing... it is an entirely different animal to WoW - it's more polished throughout, has a fantastic player base and just makes you smile when playing it.
CoH/V *should* die soon - I've never before seen such a pathetic excuse for early-game content or indeed server populations (Nobody! I met precisely 5 people in my entire time playing it!). Seeing how they're making a new expansion (5 years on from the last one!) that doesn't seem to be the case.
DDO is going free soon, all the terrible EQ-bandwagon MMORPGS are dying... yet two of the oldest on the market - EVE and RuneScape - are still growing and expanding... |

Funny you mention runescape....can't remember what it's about but apparently it's 2nd or 3rd for America behind wow. Forget what the other one is was an article on gamespy about week ago. Eve is 4th in America, considering eve subs count euro as well. |

I bet the runescape counts for the free accounts as well. I think everyone made an account at least once. I've made 5 or so accounts because I forgot the info of the previous, just to mess around. |

Holy ****, JonnyTruant. I remember that name from when I was leveling my monk/rogue. Small world that game was. But such a horrible horrible grind. Leveling was like 85% pure grind, 5% quests and 10% getting leeched.

EnB was my first dedicated MMO... played it from beta to death... i do miss some aspects of the game, but eve is a lot less friendly. That makes me happy though. I knew EnB was going down so i rejected my beta offer for EVE.... what a mistake that was... took me almost 4 years to get back into a MMO (EVE) |

Haha! Yeah that guy was pretty awesome. He helped me out so much! But yeah, the game was a *****, but tbh, it made me tolerate a lot of what other games did. At any rate, I still do miss those days! The game was difficult and the losses hurt (like eve, sometimes a lot worse) |

I just feel bad for those people for whom Matrix Online was their favorite game (there must have been some). The plug gets pulled and they can never play their game again. I'd hate that if it happened to Eve, especially with such short notice. |
