Matrix Online getting the plug pulled
Just saw this (don't ask) and though Eve is the only mmo for me and I've never played Matrix Online, I find it kind of sad for those players.
If (when?) that happens to us it will be a dark day. How do you think you would react?
For me, I don't know that I'd have the desire to play another mmo, at least for some time or until something really excellent surfaced. |

SWG should have invested more into the space side of SW, running around planets is fun and all, but that isnt what I liked most about SW. |

All I can say is...Saw that one coming. Surprised it lasted that long actually. Considering how quickly Tabu Rasa got yanked.
Soon to be failing MMO's. I'm betting on Stargate, and Startrek.
Possible failures: Starwars....yeah I said it. It's using the same formula with a few different twists. And they're sticking with tried and true starwars looks, and feel. Same story....blah blah sith trying to take over teh galaxy...blah blah. Reason it won't fail? gonna be very pve friendly, and there's enough starwars fanboy's out there to keep it going no matter the suckage it could turn into.
More possible: Jump gate evo: I'm praying this one is as fun as the multitude of reviews have made it sound.... problems with that are most of the reviewers are big WOW guys.... meaning very little risk involved....very hold your hand. Possible lack of depth.
Reason for coolness? Uses actual player skill to fly, and kill. A joystick will actually help and be meaningful. No more weapons formulas... EG: eve. So far the devs are up in the air on how "friendly" the game is going to be or how in depth you can go. Level treadmill doesnt really impact skills that much just allows for use of different things.
Black Prophecy: Once again go either way.... using instanced zones which i dont much care for EG: Age of conan ....Not sure how pve/pvp break down is going to go. Why it could work? Once again twitch based...meaning your actual skill. And all ships are modular in design, and will change look upon which mods you use. Graphics are nice. Other than that details are scarce....unless you can read german news sights. _________________________ HATERS!!!!

So was I.
I still miss the old ground game there with the skill based mix and match profession system and the original (pre combat downgrade) combat system. When EVE eventually adds avatar combat I hope it's something as complex and fun as that system.
Yep, SWG is definitely going to be one of the next to go, especially with Bioware's TOR on the horizon.
Why I've stuck with EVE ever since I left SWG is that CCP is the antithesis of SOE.

warhammer wont likely go anywhere for long time since Mythic controls it.
Like Dark age of camelot 8 years and still going, Mythic was given control of Ultima Online and still going.
Mythic has a reputation to run a game even if it's into the ground for many many years, even if it's just 1 server in the corner of the room.

War actually has a greater sub base considering eve sub base is global. The one you see for WAR is North American. Lotr has held steady since a few months after release. Those games are no more likely to fail than Eq2 at this point. However I doubt you'll see them increase in number as well. |

As a note, the original Jumpgate is still up & running. Admittedly, it has globally only a single server, but apparently enough subs to keep a few techs busy maintaining it (though the devs there have had other games, as well). |

I would be very surprised if eve shuts down within the next decade. Its far far too successful a game for that, though one can never guess if a critical game breaking bug will ever appear that will drive the population away.
I've survived through two online games getting shut down. Motor City online, and Earth and Beyond, both of which were pretty cool games (in their time). Since Eve isn't controlled by EA, I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon.
With any luck, the eve servers will become skynet before they ever shutdown.

as long as we maintain our current sub count of 300,000 eve has a revenue of 45 million dollars a year. CCP keeps refusing buyout requests, and is generally focused at doing what companies should be doing. Focusing less on money, and more on improving the game and keeping customers happy. Regardless of your experiences in eve, you know this to be fact.
That said, EVE will continue to survive so long as the devs continue to create new things, and you continue to play and have fun. |

This,
EVE will live where all of SOE's games fail because of this. I played EQ and SWG (SWG from day 2 since day 1 the logon server died)
Sony can ruin anything. They make crap. Their gaming philosophy has never evolved beyond the view that the players are privileged to be in "their worlds". When EQ was the only game in town they could get away with that crap. These days they are suffering for it.
At this point Sony would have to come to my door, beg and pay me to play in their epic fail.
I heard about the matrix, then I heard it was Sony, I knew it would suck, all rumors of the game confirmed suck and I'm flatly shocked that it lived this long. Good riddance.

If you want to try something interesting. Take a look at Megawars III. I ran across this website the other day. I have always felt that Megawars was a first iteration of EVE. The new version is pretty close to the old one even though I miss my dot matrix line printer spitting out the results every time I launch a Torp.

Deoch 16 here in Dark Ages, that was such an epic game. So simple yet so fun. If not for the incredible grind and insane difficulty of leveling 1-99 these days I might still go play it just for the memories. Sony kills whatever it touches. It just takes a while. They have little clue how to keep their player base happy which is the number one thing you have to do in order to keep any type of MMO game going. Until they figure that out, most of their MMOs will crash and burn.
I have high hopes for JG:Evo and Infinity: The quest for Earth. JG will go on forever, as the makers of the game aren't in it for the population base. Infinity, if it ever goes live, looks like it may rival Eve in some respects. The big issue with it is that its not being run by a company, just a guy. That means building the game takes forever. People have already dubbed it vaporware, but it isn't.
WoW will go on for as long as Blizzard wants it to. Its a juggernaut. Blizzard is very very good about keeping their player base happy AND finding new players. Blizzard does everything right that Sony does so very wrong.
FFIV is supposed to come out next year, but like Sony, Square-Enix fails when it comes to keeping players happy. If they learned their lesson, it will do well. If not, WoW will just crush it.
Lord of the Rings is just WoW-lite, and you might as well just play WoW given the option. It'll fail within 24 months.

Edited by: Sosus Red on 13/06/2009 06:11:47 Matrix Online was actually quite fun. I played for about two months. Fun times...for about two months then it got very repetitive.
SOE is not a bad company. Although I do not currently play any of their games, I did play SWG and EQ2 as well. Eve was my first MMO and still offers more variety than anything else out there ATM. Plus CCP is a nice company. I went to the first SWG fan fest and I also went to Eve Fan fest. Looking at how both companies interact with their fans and was very telling. SOE is part of a Global Mega Corp and thus is a bit more stuffy, so to speak. CCP is much more laid back.
They are also a client of mine, or more specifically, my employer. |

Shadowbane is also pulling the plug in july. Its too bad, the game was overly-ambitious imo. It failed to follow through on many of the gameplay pilars it began to implament. Like guild cities was awesome and city sieges sounded great but just wasnt done right. The game was supposed to be completely PVP centered but the PVP system they had just didn't work.
I do admit it was an awesome first month though! Canceled after that becuase there was literally nothing else to do (no high level pve content and flawed pvp system) |

Video 1 (this guy has worse aim than storm troopers) Video 2 (strange that they should use Pirates of the Caribbean theme music for MxO)

More than one person here thinks LOTRO will fail.
Speaking as a man who just logged in and thoroughly enjoyed simply walking through this beautiful landscape and then went fishing... it is an entirely different animal to WoW - it's more polished throughout, has a fantastic player base and just makes you smile when playing it.
CoH/V *should* die soon - I've never before seen such a pathetic excuse for early-game content or indeed server populations (Nobody! I met precisely 5 people in my entire time playing it!). Seeing how they're making a new expansion (5 years on from the last one!) that doesn't seem to be the case.
DDO is going free soon, all the terrible EQ-bandwagon MMORPGS are dying... yet two of the oldest on the market - EVE and RuneScape - are still growing and expanding... |

Holy ****, JonnyTruant. I remember that name from when I was leveling my monk/rogue. Small world that game was. But such a horrible horrible grind. Leveling was like 85% pure grind, 5% quests and 10% getting leeched.

EnB was my first dedicated MMO... played it from beta to death... i do miss some aspects of the game, but eve is a lot less friendly. That makes me happy though. I knew EnB was going down so i rejected my beta offer for EVE.... what a mistake that was... took me almost 4 years to get back into a MMO (EVE) |

Haha! Yeah that guy was pretty awesome. He helped me out so much! But yeah, the game was a *****, but tbh, it made me tolerate a lot of what other games did. At any rate, I still do miss those days! The game was difficult and the losses hurt (like eve, sometimes a lot worse) |

I just feel bad for those people for whom Matrix Online was their favorite game (there must have been some). The plug gets pulled and they can never play their game again. I'd hate that if it happened to Eve, especially with such short notice. |

I played matrix online a long time ago for a month or two.
The setting was beautiful and fun to explore.
The gameplay was horrible. Perhaps I'm understating things... THE GAMEPLAY WAS HORRIBLE!!!!! |

I keep hearing people say that LotRO is going to die. But ironically most can't back up any of their reasons why. I just don't see it happening. As one other guy said, its pretty polished with plenty of content to go around. PvP is more engaging than WoW and one can spend more time doing that then playing a regular character. The economy could be better but then all MMO's who don't have SWG-esque decay suffer from the same problem. At least the cooks are making money hand over fist.

Been playing planetside for the past two days after work and been having great fun. Dying mostly since my lvl sucks. only two servers so much better for battles. Heard it was rather scarce on the ground for good fights before. Hence this is the reason for my poorly received thread of eve and planetside combined for planet conquering. I agree the combat of just bad no mattor what any one says.
Warhammer will Fail soon it was going great till patch 1.2 screwed the balance over that much that with in a month it went for around 500k subs to around 300k.
Hell if they was to roll back 1.2 class balance i bet they would get around 100k+ players back.
LOTRO is going to die im sure of that the combat in the game is so slow it put me to sleep i could not get past level 18.
DDO only just has gameplay above the matrix so im sure its going to die.
JG im fairly sure thats going to be amassive hit at first then just fade away and stay around with like 400k-600k players.
SW(new) Meh its been done befor its going to crash and burn after maybe 2 year's if there lucky.
ST what i work out of the gameplay its going to be so boring its not funny.
AOC it will be around a few more year's i think.
World of ****ers never going to be shut down hell most likey going to become skynet/the matrix and take over the world.
And EVE i don`t think we will see the end for many many many years to come its easy got maybe 10 years life left or more. Death is great rember where all dying to get there. |

Surprised nobody has mentioned Guild Wars; it's been out now for 4+ years if I remember correctly. I was actively playing it for about 3 and half years before I jumped on the EVE band wagon when Trinity came out. GW is an awesome MMO, not to mention free, but there's been very minimal talk about GW2 which was announced 2+ years ago and haven't heard much since. NCSoft is probably busy with their Aion MMO...?

Sony can ruin anything. They make crap. Their gaming philosophy has never evolved beyond the view that the players are privileged to be in "their worlds". When EQ was the only game in town they could get away with that crap. These days they are suffering for it.
This is the deciding factor for me to never ever give another dollar to the utter monstrosity and blasphemous demon spawned malformated atropal from the dark crevices of the void that is SoE a.k.a. SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT.
They have the MIDAS touch with a different Polarity, I'll call it the "ENTROPIC touch of Utter DOOM".
ANYTHING, even the most wonderful and well thought out piece of software, that falls on their hands is a goner. Nothing can survive the absolute nihilism of their "vision" when infringed upon any game.
CCP, on the long, twisting road that they are taking paving their own hell with their "good intentions" regarding EVE will eventually sell their Soul to a dark amorphous form and manifestation of the depraved false god of MONEY. If they ever do I hope they sell their soul to the same avatar of deceit as Blizzard did instead of SoE.
I totally hate the way SoE buys all kinds of mmo's and let them rot just to fill their "marvelous" Station Access Pass, on wich, for ONLY 29.99 a month you can play TONS UPON TONS OF THRIVING AND WONDERFUL MMO's!
It's like those guys that buy terminally ill puppies/dogs/pets, give them a touch of make up and sell them to you looking like brand new healthy specimens. After a couple of days you realize your dog is SICK and dying and the company that sold it to you says "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" as they try to comfort you selling you another sick terminally ill puppy.

Once or twice a year I manage to convince myself to reactivate my Dragonrealms account.
Dragonrealms is text-only MUD published by Simutronics. It started out on AOl/Compuserv back in like 1996. As far as MUD's go, it's easily one of the most epic in the fantasy genre. If you can manage to let your imagination draw the pictures for you, the game has an amazing combat system, and definitely THE MOST creative magic systems in any game I've ever played.
If you old schoolers ever miss playing a MUD, or wanted to know what gaming was like before graphics cards and flashy pixels, this is it. Great memories. __________________________________ :Signed: |

Dark Fail
Fixed that right up for you. The only good thing about Darkfail is how much respect you develop for CCP.
I'm sure you want to chimp in with the standard Darkfail forum nonsense at this point "did you get naked zerged?" etc etc etc.
No. I just have standards. And Darkfail fell sublimely short of them. A long long way short.
Maybe in a year or two they will have at least added a player market. But I doubt it. |

Darkfall is run by a company and inhabited by players that assume a game containing non-consensual PvP and free looting automatically is it a sandbox type of game. It is not.
Secondly, Darkfall suffers from many design flaws that early players have been taken much advantage of; a behavior quite similar to early days in EVE but apparently nobody learned from that. These flaws later get "adjusted" making it much harder for newer players to get a foothold in the game. Contrary to EVE the opening of a new server might help on this problem or it could simply kill the game off as conquest have much less meaning when there are different instances of the game. |

Thanks for the Hint, made me check my long forgotten email and there it was, the invitation for 1 free month :)
It was my first mmo, good years playing that game. I dont play it for 3 years but I hope it lasts for some more years, sadly it seems that FUNCOM dont want to focus their strenght in improving the game. From what i have seen playerbase still waiting for the graphic engine upgrade. That was promissed after i left..

SOE was able to turn a money printing game like SWG into utter crap-ola. EA botched up MCO after about 6 months by killing the economy.
I am still searching for another good MMO to compliment EVE when I am station camped or burnt out |

I played MXO for a good two and a half years before coming to Eve and I have to say, the population has been consintrated to fanatics. Seriously, I went back to the forum to check some things out and there were serious threads asking for SOE to release the code so private servers could be setup, I think even one talked about buying the rights.
MXO in my opinion is a text book example of what happens to a game when the playerbase is so blindly loyal to the name that they take anything the developers will give them and praise it as the next best thing to sliced bread. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

Originally by: Mia Fatalis I would be very surprised if eve shuts down within the next decade.
300,00 subscrptions i thought space was crowded with just 8000 no matter .i think eve has some life left in it atm
