So I just started playing ~ 3 weeks ago and I've enjoyed the game tons! I have some friends who play and they've helped me out with tips and such. I've only been doing missions and now I'm up to level 3's while I train up some skills to do them successfully...
Since I havent trained drone skills at all, people were telling me that they are necessary for doing level 3s in a Drake. So I look at the market and find the book 1 system away from me. Get into my Caracal for faster movement and fly over.
I jump through the gate and look to see that it is 0.4. Didnt think much as I figured that it is still safe by what I read earlier(turrets help out??). I warp to the station and proceed to dock as I notice 3 people locking on. I get in the station and buy my stuff, undock and get targetted by 4-5 people and instantly they start ripping me apart.
I asked them nicely please let me leave because I've only been playing for a short time and I am no match to them in any way shape or form. They proceeded to insult me and said "girls shouldnt be playing games anyways". :( . I barely had enough shield left to dock again at the station. I buy two Warp Core Stabilizers I after training Warp Drive. I go to undock and warp out and still get scrambled and insulted by these jerks!!!
I just had enough time(50% hull left) to dock again. I asked them nicely if they would please leave me alone so I could go back to doing missions peacefully and enjoy the beautiful game but they said that they "wanted me to quit the game and they will sit there all night to do that".
:(
Why are people such meanies in this game?? It really turned me off.

There is a big warning whenever you manually try to use a "lowsec" (0.4 or lower) stargate that explains it all very nicely. Long story short, 0.5 and above ("highsec") is all flowers and candy... but 0.4 ("lowsec") or below, it's full of baddies that only want to kill your ship (and if you don't run fast, your pod too), loot your wreck and laugh heartily while doing it (a.k.a. "PIRATES").

I undersstand some people like to be pirates and fight each other...But why would they not let me leave after I asked nicely? I just wanted to go back to doing missions, I wasnt doing anything mean to them or saying anything. I just flew by to buy that Drone book...
I was pretty sad, I had to log out and log back in the morning to fly out of there.

Most of us have had similar experiences early on in Eve. Most of us have lost a number of ships to a**holes, so you at least got out with your ship.
Chalk this up to learning.

A masterful troll, though the "I wasn't doing anything mean to them" was a touch overkill for my tastes. |

People are mean in this game because they're so angry that there's nothing to do. It's been so long since their last good 1v1 that they form groups and just harass individual people because at the very least, they get to use the guns that they pay $15/month to stare at. |

Welcome to EVE, don't let the meanies scare you away!
Asking nicely doesn't really make any difference; they wanted something, and apparently your death was a way to obtain that something. Unconsensual PvP is the core of EVE, and if you intend to venture into low and null sec you need to be prepared for it.

As weird as it might sound but people have different tastes. Just like your experience has "turned you off" the three guys are "turned on" by gang-ganking you and attempting to forcefully insert various shaped charges to your ship until they reach your tiny precious pod resting inside.
Some like mother and some daughter etc etc etc.
Just close client for today and check again tomorrow, at the same time remembering that in some bad neighborhoods with wrong kind of people on lookout girls can face situation described earlier, nothing new here, all part to give you as realistic experience as possible.

I am too new to attack other players, I've only been playing for 3 weeks. My friend tells me that the pirates go to the zero security space, I didnt think in 0.4 they would attack me at a station. The ISD in Rookie Help said taht there are turrets near the station that protect you.

They offer some degree of assistance, but not complete protection - an opposing force prepared for them can easily withstand their fire and eventually kill you.

Okay so going to stations is now out of the question in 0.4. Is it still safe to do missions in these areas??

My first pirate experience included destroying a ratting catalyst and locking the pod who's pilot explained how he was only a day old (was true too).
"Welcome to eve" was the last thing he heard from me and my fellow pirates.

No, nothing in 0.4 or lower, or 0.0 is "safe".
whilst I think what happened to you was pretty juvenile and lame, if that sort of behaviour is going to turn you off, then stay away from any low- or null-sec regions.
Empire space is relatively safe but even then you have to watch out - you should read up on the rules of engagement so that you don't fall prey to can-flipping or similar cheap tricks.
stick with it. there are more good people in EvE than toolbox's, it's just sometimes easy to forget that.

No. You're ready. You will just have a hard time winning on your own without a fair bit of luck on where, when and whom you choose to attack. In fact, right now is a good time to start — get used to shooting stuff; get used to being shot at; get used to losing ships and clones and start learning how to keep those two from being the same thing as "losing everything you have."
The earlier the better, and the fact that you already survived twice is promising…

Unless you take some pretty major precautions that will eat into your missioning time (and thus your profits), no. Not really.
In fact, strike "safe" from your vocabulary every time you launch EVE — it doesn't exist here, not even in high-sec. Get into that mindset and you will have a much easier time to adapt to the EVE environment. |

A) even if it's a troll post, some non-trolls might read the replies B) does it really matter what gender the player is ?

a) Thought the same thing (this is all too reminiscent of Cat O'brainless) but on the off-chance it wasn't, I replied. b) who cares? a player is a player is a player. unless they're a troll.

Well ranger1 I thought it was a troll too. And to call herself that mshappypanties iether is very comfortable in her sexuality or is a man's fantasy alt.
On the offchance that she is not a troll: Convo me ingame and I'll tell you how to avoid or suceed in pvp on ventrillo.
If she/he is a troll: Good job. Talking about the noobie pvp experience is one of the few topics that will create intelligent constructive posts instead of a flame war. |

I just dont feel comfortable in fighting other people. I've never been good at in other games I played and typically try to stay away from it. I kind of wish that Eve had a server where there was no player versus player. I can understand other people wanting to do this though but I thought it was really rude and mean when they told me to "quit" just because I was asking them nicely to leave me be.
I have found the Rookie Hellp channel to be very helpful and most people there will explain things and sometimes come out to help on a mission that I am having a hard time with. I just dont know, maybe I dont understand the game at all.

Edited by: Lysianna on 23/06/2009 17:30:10 Alright, hereÆs a quick ôguideö for you.
If youÆre not ready to die by players:
-DonÆt go in systems lower then 0.5.
-DonÆt take missions that sends you in 0.4 and
lower.
-DonÆt try to engage a conversation with a pirate. They will only smack talk back.
-If youÆre in a station in low/null sec, then make sure youÆre undocking safely. Remember you can always redock without getting hit if you donÆt start moving your shipà just let it drift through space and take a peak at your surroundings and overview then redock.
-DonÆt be paranoid, if a player has -4 security standings. It doesnÆt mean heÆs actually a pirate.
-If you do need to go in low sec, bring something that you can afford to lose. DonÆt go there in your shiny new faction fitted BS.
-Fast and small enhances your chance of survival.
-Find alternate routes instead of going in low sec.
-Post that in the EVE New Citizens Q&A instead of here, you get as many silly replies.
-New or Not, this is EVE. This is not joy land where everything is dandy. Harsh realities are up ahead and you havenÆt seen the last of it. Get used to this life style as it will only get crazier as you progress.
-Join a corp and learn to properly survive in space.
welcome to EVE and good luck :) |

When you're picking up anything smaller than 10m3, like a skillbook, might as well just go in a shuttle. It aligns and gets to warp quickly. When you get a skillbook in an unsafe place, just rightclick the book and inject it. It won't interrupt whatever you're currently training and puts the skill in your character sheet for later training when you're ready for it.
