I am having a bit of trouble understanding the purposes of these two skills and I was hoping someone could clarify it.
Example:
I want to raise my True Power (Sansha) standing from 0.01. Connections says a 4% increase with friendly corps. Criminal Connections says a 0.4 raise with criminal NPCs. However both skills state that they are not cumulative with each other.
So the first question is, which skill would raise my standing higher? The second question is, do these skills cancel each other out and by that I mean, if I have connections trained should I ever bother with criminal connections? The third question would be is the percentage increase retroactive and by that I mean, if I trained connections to 1 when my standing was 1.00 and it raises me to 1.4, would i receive a 4% increase everytime I receive an increase or the increase only happens one time once the skill is trained to a new level?
Thanks in advance.

criminal connections because they are a criminal corp
connections for none criminal corps
they don't cancel each other out
the advance is in total you what you have ...
so if you have 1.0 and connections @1 you get 4% if you do nothing but train connections then it goes up

Edited by: Inahpets on 07/07/2009 19:48:26 It doesn't seem to me like there's much of a point to Criminal Connections. There's 3 skills I know of that affect standings
Diplomacy for "Hostile" agents Connections for "Friendly" agents Crim. Connections for agents who are not friendly with Concord.
Assuming you have to have a non-0.0 standing for any of these to come into play, it would seem that all agents are either Hostile or Friendly, and since Connections and Crim. Connections have the same training multiplier and Diplomacy a lesser one, it doesn't seem like it'd ever make sense to train Crim Connections.
The only thing I could see would be if Connections specifically didn't affect criminal corps, which I guess is a different definition of "friendly" but it makes more sense to me for "friendly" = "Liked by" and "hostile" = "disliked by"
I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.
The test would be to raise Connections higher than Crim. Connections (2 vs 1 would work fine and takes what, a couple hours to train.) and see under your standings window which is boosting it. I bet it's connections since you're positive to begin with.

Looking at my character sheet, I can see the following effects:
'Connections' applies to faction/corporation/agent standings if you have positive standing to the faction/corporation/agent and the faction/corporation/agent is lawful. 'Criminal Connections' applies to faction/corporation/agent standings if you have positive standing to the faction/corporation/agent and the faction/corporation/agent is criminal. 'Diplomacy' applies to faction/corporation/agent standings if you have negative standing to the faction/corporation/agent.
Note that all these skills add 4% (of the difference between the standing and +10), even if the description says it adds a flat '0.4'.

Pretty much every other question has been answered, but I'll answer your last one for you. The connections skills increase your standing at all times. If you have a 1.0 base standing and train a connections skill to level 1 you will get a 4% increase. If you train it to level two you will then get two 4% increases (the first increase is applied to your 1.0 standing and then the second increase is applied to your new modified standing). The connections skills look at your base standing and then increase it by the 4% per level. When you look at your standings page it will show your standing and then next to that it will state that "Level X of <connections skill> increases your standings from Y.YY".

just to make it clear look at concord standings. All the empires that concord like, Minmatar, Amarr, Caldari etc are affected by connections skill as long as you have a 0.0+ standing with them.
All the factions that concord doesn't like, Angels, Serpentis, Sansha, etc are affected by criminal connections as long as you have a 0.0+ standing with them.
Diplomacy affects every faction that you have negative standings with.

The formula for connections/criminal connections if I remember it correctly is:
New standing = old standing + ((10-old standing)*(.04*skill lvl))
so if your skill lvl is 1 and your standing is 1.0 then is would be 1+((10-1)*.04)=1.36 at lvl 3 it would be 1+((10-1)*.12)=2.08

The "Criminal Connections" skill was pretty pointless for a long time, because "Connections" applied to both lawful and unlawful NPC factions. That was corrected in a rather recent patch, and now "Connections" ONLY applies to lawful NPC factions.

Just want to confirm that Diplomacy and Connection skills do not cancel each other out. When you increase your standings with one faction it automatically decreases your standing with an enemy faction. So logically, you would assume that Connections, in raising your standings, would also negatively affect your enemy standings. Or does the negative effect only happen on the base standing value? |

The skills don't change your standings as such but make your standing appear better. The agent/corporation/faction will treat you as having a higher standing than you actually have. Interactions with them will use the increased (effective) standing, whereas some functions - such as player corp standing calculations - use the unmodified (base) standing.
