Hi, I'm HOPING that I'm missing something. I emailed Customer service Tuesday, but I haven't seen a reply.
My sons and I each tried EVE out last week, setting up trial accounts and while the learning curve was steep, it was interesting. We decided that yes, this was a game worth paying to play (plus, we're UTTERLY sick of magic and elves). Myself + 2 sons = 3 toons for an account: perfect, right? We wouldn't be able to play with each other simultaneously, of course, but that's fine, our playtimes rarely overlap.
Well, no.
What we discovered once we signed up for an account is that as long as a single toon is training anything, no other toons can train AT ALL.
Now, don't get me wrong: I understand EVEs motivation here - to get people to focus on one toon at a time. And this would be almost trivial if it was just some buff that accumulates during offline time like WoW's "double xp resting bonus". But EVE is a game that (at least from my view) DEPENDS on the offline development of characters. There's NO OTHER WAY to advance your toon's skills aside from 'time spent'.
That makes this a deal-killer. We'd *LOVE* to play EVE, but to essentially cut our character-development speed by 2/3s (and forcing us to workaround my micromanaging our character development "My guy is done with training that one skill in 2d4h31m, then you can log in and train a skill!...") - well, unless you're only going to charge me 1/3 the cost, thanks but no thanks.
Again, we really like EVE. We'd really like to play EVE. But we can't afford $45/month, just to have 3 toons.
I'm really hoping someone can tell me how we're misunderstanding something, because I still want to play the damn game. |

To the OP: could you name any mmorpg that allows simultaneous training of 3 chars on the same account to begin with? |

well... it's just the same as with any other MMOs. there (like wow for example) only 1 of your characters can gain levels at a certain time (that is, you are not able to play 2-3 of them at any given time). here in eve skilling is realtime, so CCP had to invent some rules for having one char proceeding at a given time/account.
you can try to share up your training time just as your playing time, and there you go: a solution.
i really can't see why you want CCP to differ (that much) from any other MMO publishers... they differ a lot (thanks them), but what you ask simply seems a bit strange to me. |

Edited by: Zartanic on 25/06/2009 13:23:26 Its no different from any other online game. Its one account per person and your probably breaking the EULA by doing more than one playing as it is, hence no reply. You can't level in WOW either without being online which stops the alts being online too or playing together.
Why would any company do it any other way? They would go bust. You would get 'friends' sharing accounts, online sharing services and all sorts of abuse and they would lose a lot of money.
You paid for one person only not three. You can still train, its just a lot slower. For basic skills to get on with its a few weeks at most. If anything EVE is better than other games at this.
There has been suggestions that the alts can share the training at the same time though, although obviously at 1/3 each.

This. The only difference is EVE already prohibits account sharing by design. |

Edited by: Tranka Verrane on 25/06/2009 13:54:50 Solution: 3 accounts.
Unlike most games Eve allows you to pay for the game using ingame currency. this means once you can get earning decent isk you can defer some of the cost of playing others perpetually. Playing co-operatively all at the same time, which you can if you have three accounts (assuming you have three computers) that should be relatively easy to achieve.
To get your accounts up and running you get 2x 21 day trials and two months for free on your main account, through the buddy program. If all that isn't bending over backwards to get you all involved, I don't know what is.
I'm actually quite envious of your situation.

Well the skill training system is one of the things I really like about EVE. There is no rush for me to play more to become better. So it combines perfectly with AFK.
As previous posters mentioned after a couple of months you should be able to easily make the money to pay for a part of you subsription fee with ISK. |

Thanks very much for the constructive reply.
I looked, and you're right, the buddy policy is a good start, but I can' find anything about paying for game time with in-game currency?

Playing simultaneously is unlikely just due to our schedules, but the idea that hard ingame work could mitigate the costs enough to make this do-able is cool.

Wow, so eve has its share of tinfoil hatters? Pray tell, why would I bother posting if it wasn't the case?
I appreciate the thoughtful comments (positive and negative as well) but this one just made me laugh.

At the bottom of the forum index, you'll find the time code bazaar (http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=channel&channelID=544711) which allows you to buy game time for ingame isk. Make sure to read carefully the guidelines there : http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1006107

750Mil to 800Mil for 60days, per GTC / Account
now if you pay for one account in 3mnth or 12mnth chunks by CC then use pooled money to pay for GTC for other accounts your on to a winner.... YMMV |

If you think that's tinfoil hattery, you ain't seen nothin' yet.
But yes, you can only skill 1 character per account at a time. You need 3 accounts to have 3 decently skilled characters. You can pay for game time by buying PLEXes off the market (or off the timecode forum here), but it's probably going to be a lot more than you can afford as a new player - about 350-400M a month.

I recommend you sign up on the six-month or one-year payment plan, it's somewhat cheaper than the monthly rate. Alternatively, you can buy two well-developed characters up-front (using ISK that you get from selling PLEXes) and give one to each kid.

ok say you just play to train skills, ok now tell me after you get done training that nice shinny battle ship skill then what? go out and buy one rite? cool that will be 100 mill, oh whats that? you donty have any isk because you didn't play the game? tough luck buddy. let me let you in on a little secret eve is noting like wow don't try to get the devs to implement changes to make it like that shoddy pice of programing they call a game is not only selfish but its also ruining the game for people that play eve because it was like noting they ever seen before not because it was magic and gnomes in space.
eve is in a game level by its self it is the most innovative game i have ever seen and it is the most like real life then any game i have ever seen, to try to change it to be more like wow is a dishonor to ccp and evey one that worked to make this game the best in the world.

Another way to look at their skill system is this:
Get 3 accounts, 1 for each of you (it's not THAT expensive). Now you can all plan out what role you want to play in your "gang". No matter how much you or your kids play, you'll all be around the same skill level. I think you could have a lot of fun if you give it an honest shot.

Correct, unfortunately... I had always thought that children could share an account with a parent, but that's in WoW where their language is not nearly as specific. CCP has this to say:
Originally by: EVE EULA i. Responsibility for Account Minor children may not establish an Account without the consent of a parent or guardian. If the user of EVE is a minor, a parent or guardian must complete the registration process to establish an Account, in which case the parent or guardian takes full responsibility for all obligations under the EULA and for all activities of the child using the Account. If you are a parent or guardian, you may permit one child to use the Account instead of you (in which case you may not use that Account).
Sorry, but even if you could get around the skill training issue, you technically need one account per person. |

1) To those with constructive responses: thanks very much. We don't have a budget that can support 3 accounts separately, so simply "get 3 accounts" isn't much of an answer.
In reality, sadly, my original post IS correct: as you've pointed out the EULA very distinctly says that a parent sharing an account with his children is in violation, which in real terms is pretty absurd. But hey, it's CCP's game and their choice to make. My choice is whether the coolness of the game is worth the annoyance factors, and on balance, it probably isn't. There are a host of games out there, we'll keep looking until we find one. Sadly, we're not going to be EVE customers. Again, I sincerely appreciate the effort some of you have made to explain both EVE's approach and how we could mitigate it for our situation. Thank you.
2) To the snide, defensive, or arrogant posts - wow, I haven't heard a crowd like this since...well, since I bothered to try to ask a question on the World of Warcraft forums. In terms of fanboi maturity, you're almost indistinguishable.

Read your title again.
"EVE doesn't want families to play".
You came onto the forums to **** and moan rather than to ask questions. Yes, you will get snide responses if you do so, since whines don't deserve anything else.

Well, do this then: Create your account, send a budy key to yourself, create an triaś accounbt for one of your kids, pay for a one month subscription on that trial account, bvingo, your account gets 30 days gametme credited, because your "budy referal" became a full account. This ends you with Two Accounts, while you only payd what you had to pay for one account anyway (one account creation fee, one month subsciprion) use both accounts to rack in thew cash for PLEXes (chckt the ingame market) create from the account of your first son, a buddy account for your second kid, paying one month, adding 30 days for the accouint of your first kid, now you have payd: one account 2 months subscription and you have 3 accounts which can, if done properly, easy earn the chash for the plexes

This topic is brought up every now and then, and, basically, we feel for you, but the alternative of being able to train all 3 characters isn't all that great either.
If it was possible to train 3 characters, we would ALL of us train 3 characters (otherwise we'd "lag behind the average", so to speak). So everyone would pretty much have a high-SP PVP alt, a fully trained miner/hauler/industrialist, and a fully-trained PVE character with access to L4 missions. The game is more than 5 years old. And with everyone having access to 3 fully trained alts, nobody would need to group up with anyone else, ever, so what would be the point of the MM part of this MMO?
Basically.

To clear something up. WOW allows a minor to play on a parents account but that does not affect levelling at all, you do not get two accounts for the price of one. And anyway who the hell would know who is playing it? Only if your playing 24/7 or dumb enough to tell them (which you did) will they know.
Considering you made an assertion which is plain rubbish of course you got flamed. Same as any forum a reader gets your attitude from that (in your case CCP and by inference EVE is dumb, not smart on EVE forums)
And I know WOW forums very well, you would have got no constructive input at all.

Also against the EULA - one person per account only permitted there. You can always play a single character, but then you face other problems.
CCP might silently tolerate multiple family members (or maybe even friends in the same household) on a single account, but they certainly won't do anything to encourage it.
