Hi, I'm HOPING that I'm missing something. I emailed Customer service Tuesday, but I haven't seen a reply.
My sons and I each tried EVE out last week, setting up trial accounts and while the learning curve was steep, it was interesting. We decided that yes, this was a game worth paying to play (plus, we're UTTERLY sick of magic and elves). Myself + 2 sons = 3 toons for an account: perfect, right? We wouldn't be able to play with each other simultaneously, of course, but that's fine, our playtimes rarely overlap.
Well, no.
What we discovered once we signed up for an account is that as long as a single toon is training anything, no other toons can train AT ALL.
Now, don't get me wrong: I understand EVEs motivation here - to get people to focus on one toon at a time. And this would be almost trivial if it was just some buff that accumulates during offline time like WoW's "double xp resting bonus". But EVE is a game that (at least from my view) DEPENDS on the offline development of characters. There's NO OTHER WAY to advance your toon's skills aside from 'time spent'.
That makes this a deal-killer. We'd *LOVE* to play EVE, but to essentially cut our character-development speed by 2/3s (and forcing us to workaround my micromanaging our character development "My guy is done with training that one skill in 2d4h31m, then you can log in and train a skill!...") - well, unless you're only going to charge me 1/3 the cost, thanks but no thanks.
Again, we really like EVE. We'd really like to play EVE. But we can't afford $45/month, just to have 3 toons.
I'm really hoping someone can tell me how we're misunderstanding something, because I still want to play the damn game. |

well... it's just the same as with any other MMOs. there (like wow for example) only 1 of your characters can gain levels at a certain time (that is, you are not able to play 2-3 of them at any given time). here in eve skilling is realtime, so CCP had to invent some rules for having one char proceeding at a given time/account.
you can try to share up your training time just as your playing time, and there you go: a solution.
i really can't see why you want CCP to differ (that much) from any other MMO publishers... they differ a lot (thanks them), but what you ask simply seems a bit strange to me. |

Edited by: Zartanic on 25/06/2009 13:23:26 Its no different from any other online game. Its one account per person and your probably breaking the EULA by doing more than one playing as it is, hence no reply. You can't level in WOW either without being online which stops the alts being online too or playing together.
Why would any company do it any other way? They would go bust. You would get 'friends' sharing accounts, online sharing services and all sorts of abuse and they would lose a lot of money.
You paid for one person only not three. You can still train, its just a lot slower. For basic skills to get on with its a few weeks at most. If anything EVE is better than other games at this.
There has been suggestions that the alts can share the training at the same time though, although obviously at 1/3 each.

This. The only difference is EVE already prohibits account sharing by design. |

Edited by: Tranka Verrane on 25/06/2009 13:54:50 Solution: 3 accounts.
Unlike most games Eve allows you to pay for the game using ingame currency. this means once you can get earning decent isk you can defer some of the cost of playing others perpetually. Playing co-operatively all at the same time, which you can if you have three accounts (assuming you have three computers) that should be relatively easy to achieve.
To get your accounts up and running you get 2x 21 day trials and two months for free on your main account, through the buddy program. If all that isn't bending over backwards to get you all involved, I don't know what is.
I'm actually quite envious of your situation.

Well the skill training system is one of the things I really like about EVE. There is no rush for me to play more to become better. So it combines perfectly with AFK.
As previous posters mentioned after a couple of months you should be able to easily make the money to pay for a part of you subsription fee with ISK. |

Thanks very much for the constructive reply.
I looked, and you're right, the buddy policy is a good start, but I can' find anything about paying for game time with in-game currency?

Playing simultaneously is unlikely just due to our schedules, but the idea that hard ingame work could mitigate the costs enough to make this do-able is cool.

At the bottom of the forum index, you'll find the time code bazaar (http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=channel&channelID=544711) which allows you to buy game time for ingame isk. Make sure to read carefully the guidelines there : http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1006107

If you think that's tinfoil hattery, you ain't seen nothin' yet.
But yes, you can only skill 1 character per account at a time. You need 3 accounts to have 3 decently skilled characters. You can pay for game time by buying PLEXes off the market (or off the timecode forum here), but it's probably going to be a lot more than you can afford as a new player - about 350-400M a month.

I recommend you sign up on the six-month or one-year payment plan, it's somewhat cheaper than the monthly rate. Alternatively, you can buy two well-developed characters up-front (using ISK that you get from selling PLEXes) and give one to each kid.

eve is in a game level by its self it is the most innovative game i have ever seen and it is the most like real life then any game i have ever seen, to try to change it to be more like wow is a dishonor to ccp and evey one that worked to make this game the best in the world.

Another way to look at their skill system is this:
Get 3 accounts, 1 for each of you (it's not THAT expensive). Now you can all plan out what role you want to play in your "gang". No matter how much you or your kids play, you'll all be around the same skill level. I think you could have a lot of fun if you give it an honest shot.

Correct, unfortunately... I had always thought that children could share an account with a parent, but that's in WoW where their language is not nearly as specific. CCP has this to say:
Originally by: EVE EULA i. Responsibility for Account Minor children may not establish an Account without the consent of a parent or guardian. If the user of EVE is a minor, a parent or guardian must complete the registration process to establish an Account, in which case the parent or guardian takes full responsibility for all obligations under the EULA and for all activities of the child using the Account. If you are a parent or guardian, you may permit one child to use the Account instead of you (in which case you may not use that Account).
Sorry, but even if you could get around the skill training issue, you technically need one account per person. |

1) To those with constructive responses: thanks very much. We don't have a budget that can support 3 accounts separately, so simply "get 3 accounts" isn't much of an answer.
In reality, sadly, my original post IS correct: as you've pointed out the EULA very distinctly says that a parent sharing an account with his children is in violation, which in real terms is pretty absurd. But hey, it's CCP's game and their choice to make. My choice is whether the coolness of the game is worth the annoyance factors, and on balance, it probably isn't. There are a host of games out there, we'll keep looking until we find one. Sadly, we're not going to be EVE customers. Again, I sincerely appreciate the effort some of you have made to explain both EVE's approach and how we could mitigate it for our situation. Thank you.
2) To the snide, defensive, or arrogant posts - wow, I haven't heard a crowd like this since...well, since I bothered to try to ask a question on the World of Warcraft forums. In terms of fanboi maturity, you're almost indistinguishable.

Well, do this then: Create your account, send a budy key to yourself, create an triaś accounbt for one of your kids, pay for a one month subscription on that trial account, bvingo, your account gets 30 days gametme credited, because your "budy referal" became a full account. This ends you with Two Accounts, while you only payd what you had to pay for one account anyway (one account creation fee, one month subsciprion) use both accounts to rack in thew cash for PLEXes (chckt the ingame market) create from the account of your first son, a buddy account for your second kid, paying one month, adding 30 days for the accouint of your first kid, now you have payd: one account 2 months subscription and you have 3 accounts which can, if done properly, easy earn the chash for the plexes

This topic is brought up every now and then, and, basically, we feel for you, but the alternative of being able to train all 3 characters isn't all that great either.
If it was possible to train 3 characters, we would ALL of us train 3 characters (otherwise we'd "lag behind the average", so to speak). So everyone would pretty much have a high-SP PVP alt, a fully trained miner/hauler/industrialist, and a fully-trained PVE character with access to L4 missions. The game is more than 5 years old. And with everyone having access to 3 fully trained alts, nobody would need to group up with anyone else, ever, so what would be the point of the MM part of this MMO?
Basically.

To clear something up. WOW allows a minor to play on a parents account but that does not affect levelling at all, you do not get two accounts for the price of one. And anyway who the hell would know who is playing it? Only if your playing 24/7 or dumb enough to tell them (which you did) will they know.
Considering you made an assertion which is plain rubbish of course you got flamed. Same as any forum a reader gets your attitude from that (in your case CCP and by inference EVE is dumb, not smart on EVE forums)
And I know WOW forums very well, you would have got no constructive input at all.

Also against the EULA - one person per account only permitted there. You can always play a single character, but then you face other problems.
CCP might silently tolerate multiple family members (or maybe even friends in the same household) on a single account, but they certainly won't do anything to encourage it.

No, you haven't got this, or you aren't explaining yourself properly.
Your way costs you one account, that you can't all play at the same time, for three months play.
My way: Month one, you play for 14 days for free, or even better find someone to take you on as a buddy, you get 21 days and they get a month free and if they have any sense of generosity at all should give you some decent starter isk for the privilege. At the conclusion of your trial you pay for a two month game sub and convert it into two plexes, one of which you apply to your account.
Month two you issue two buddy invites to your sons and they play for 21 days for free. You pass one of them your spare plex (remembering to petition for your game time) and pay a months subscription for the other. So far you have paid three months worth of real life cash.
The three accounts then have a month to make enough isk to buy a plex for the other two. If you don't quite make it your main account will still have a further month to work on it solo, although a gang of 3 doing level 4 missions can quite easily make that kind of cash, if you spend a lot of time ingame, even that young. At the very least you should factor in that between you you should be able to stop paying for the game after a years playing (at the very least), assuming that cost is really that significant a factor. I haven't paid for the game since about the first nine months and I was working solo.
You will have at the very least had a total of 123 days free game time (2x30 days free for your two new subscribers, 3x21 day trials. If after a grand total of 213 days of game time you haven't decided the game is paying some more for then you aren't a serious Eve player anyway.

They want to play, not work at the game. You don't know how old the sons are, and how much time everyone has.
The OP simply wants 3 full characters for the price of 1 account, and no other extra work. It would be a reasonable question to ask if it's possible, except of course the thread title is along the lines of what phone salespeople try to pull ("But, sir, you'll save money if you switch to us. You do want to save money, do you not?"). That kind of line always deserves a **** you, and we hate phone salespeople anyway.
It's all been explained already.
Bottom line, the monthly fee and account restrictions have been that way for over 5 years. Petition CCP if you want, and good luck. |

Neither do you. Play the game a lot and play for free, or play occasionally and in fits of risky PVP and pay to play, those are the choices, at least early on. He has said paying for 3 accounts wasn't an option for expense reasons do I was offering an alternative.
Bottom line, you want three people to play for the price of one without any extra work; then go f**k yourself.

The solution to the OP is easy.
The person playing is running a skill. Before logging out he pause the skill and the next person playing can start his skill. This is identical to how skill progression work on a single account in WoW so shouldn't be a problem in EVE either right? |

Though... there isn't that many other MMO's with the same skill/training system as EVE haves. Also all the other (major) MMO's allow account sharing between family members (ie father and 2 sons).
And since most other games use the kill stuff/do quests etc. to gain experience and gain levels -system, it is possible to level multiple characters without any real drawbacks. In EVE the training is done in real time, which means when you pause the training to train other character, you LOSE skill points. However in the more standart style MMO's, you go make food, your son comes to play/level hes character and you lose nothing because you wouldn't be playing your character anyway.

It wasn't always that way, sadly it's getting more and more like that in EvE everyday, the more popular it becomes the more muppets there are around :(
Unfortunately if you can't afford to pay for 3 accounts then there isn't a lot to do, there are good reasons for only allowing 1 character to train per account at any given time.
Yes you can pay for your game time using in game money, I haven't paid real cash to play eve in a while, unfortunately the amount of ISK they cost per month is probably not feesable for most new player to acheive (you're looking at around 800Mil a month assuming you pay real money for 1 account and ISK for the other 2). |

I believe that the main reason CCP doesnt allow multiple training chars on one account is that it would allow people to "farm" characters without actually playing them. In EvE, it is perfectly legal, acceptable, and common to sell of characters when their use is no longer needed. There is even a forum on here to facilitate the transfer. So, think of the issues it would cause if every player had 2 alts that they were farming >for free<.
CCP is in this whole gaming thing to make money, and they make money when someone opens an account, trains up a character, and then sells it. CCP makes no money when someone trains up two alts on the same account and sells them for in game currency and they perpetually plays for free.
For example...if everyone could train multiple chars per 1 subscription, then in 3 to 4 months you could train up a mining alt...sell that alt for 2 billion...buy game time cards with that isk for the next 3-4 months, and so forth and so on. Problem is, eventually since everyone can train up their own alts the market for characters dies, and everyone just has one account....which, in turn, means CCP makes less money, which be the very nature of business, is against their ultimate goals. |

It's unfortunate, but I see no way around it. It would be ridiculous to allow people to train alts at the same time as their main character. There are already too many damn alts as it is. |

Though... there isn't that many other MMO's with the same skill/training system as EVE haves.
However in the more standart style MMO's, you go make food, your son comes to play/level hes character and you lose nothing because you wouldn't be playing your character anyway.

um the point is that the fact that you can't train skills on diff characters simultaneously on the same account is equivalent to not being able to log in with two characters on the same account on any other MMO (like WoW). He would have to pay for three accounts on other MMOs anyway if they wanted to play at the same time.
But, as someone suggested, if they only play in a serial rather than simultaneous fashion, then one guy can stop skill training so the other can log on and start his.. not that hard.

Let me add my voice to the choir here.
First, it is true that you can only have one character, per account, logged in at the same time and playing at the same time.
This isn't unusual. I've played and worked on many a MMO, and I cannot recall a single game that allows you to play multiple characters simultaneously from one account, and thus "level" multiple characters, from one account, simultaneously.
As others have suggested, use the buddy system. That will get you two months free game time. Eventually you will be able to buy game time with isk. For information on how to do that go to the "timecode bazaar" channel on these forums.
You can also purchase 30 day plex cards off of the market in game. Each of these provides your account with 30 days of game time.
Cheers,

One thing that should be pointed out is this:
Access to an account is for one person only: sharing login and password among multiple persons is against the EULA. Parents of minors do have the right to know the login and password of their children accounts but they shall not play the game on that account. Only ONE of the children shall know the credentials for a given account.
The above rules are part of the contract (EULA). And this is the case for all the MMORPGS I know of. Granted it may be difficult for the MMORPG company to enforce those rules. But you should remember that if they have evidence that you AND your child are sharing an account OR that multiple children of yours are playing on the same account they DO have the right to suspend the account and you are not eligible for a refund.
Again: this is the same for all MMORPGs I know of. |

Ok, I think you are all missing the obvious and should do what I did.
Sell the kids and with the money you get pay for an account. Thats exactly what I did and now I get three years paid game time with no interuptions - paradise.
The only problem is I need a hauler alt....mmmmm.... now where did my wife go. |

TBH that's probably among the least-enforced portions of EULAs (and there's a lot of competition) because it makes little to no financial sense for a MMO to use it against anyone but a game-currency farmer who's playing 24/7/365.
Yes, CCP would get the remainder of your month's sub but they'd lose the rest of the time you'd spend as a member. The decrease in server bandwidth does not save them $10-15/mo. |

Petition CCP if you want, and good luck.
thats not what he said, he asked for 3 chars without paying 3 accounts with RL money, here is his solution, like it or not, but it IS an solution :P

why not just share one character? Even if you could train more than one character at a time on a single account you would not be able to use more than one at a time so they would be sharing the account anyway. |

Other option would be to buy characters off the forum to fill those slots. Decent miner will cost you a couple bil and shouldn't require any further training to generate isk. |

Just play the one guy then. Make his name an anagram of all three of your names
But making ludicrous claims that EvE and CCP is anti family is just dumb. It has always been one character can train skills at a time.

im pretty sure you can all just play eve using 1 account and 1 character.
while account sharing is technically not allowed, they prob wont care too much if you are not doing dome dodgy stuff and giving them money every month.
since you wont have overlapping game time, this is doubly better because now you can make alot more isk ingame with you 3x eve time.

1. This is Eve Online, which due to its vicious game mechanics, attracts and retains some of the most cold hearted, caluculated, forum warriors of any game out there. You would have to go visit daytime TV drama forums if you wanted to beat the people here in the ire that resides in their hearts. With that said, there are still many great and wonderful people that make this game their home, also due to the vicious game mechanics that provide a challenge.
2. A possible soultion for you, since you don't want to pay for 3 accounts for 3 people and you want all 3 of those same people to play on that account. All 3 of you stay on the one account you are paying for, and all 3 of you focus on 1 character only. Not 1 for each person, 1 character for the 3 of you, if you only want to train/pay for 1 account. So you all play train the same character. Since you said your play times rarely overlap, then there is no problem with this. Player A gets on, makes money, now Player B, then Player C, repeat.
3. Your goal is to make enough in game money so you can eventually purchase a pre-trained character for your kids. You want to get pre-trained characters that will allow you to make lots and lots of money, way more than you have been making up till this point. Your family will have to research which characters would be best for you to make money with your play styles. These pre-trained guys can cost in the Billions, which you can make from mining if you all do it, or mission running, if you all do it. Once you guys have your own characters that make lots of money, now you guys need to make in game money so you can trade it for game time. Because people buy game time cards, and are allowed, in game, to sell those time cards for in game currency. This is one possible solution to your problem and gives the three of you some in game goals. It is akin to grinding for an epic mount, so you understand the amount of work that will be involved.
Good luck and welcome to Eve!

tbh ccp will have a hell of a time proving, hell they probably wont even care, if you and 2 others play the same account and all use the same character. I find the main grind in eve is to make isk more then gain sp. making more isk leads into being able to use the things that require more sp imo.

You think EVE is the only game like this? Really?
Try reading your EULA on your WoW account. Get caught sharing an account between you and you sons and you will be banned. The same goes for all other MMO's I have ever played.
An account is not intended to be for you, your wife, your mistress, your 32nd cousin twice removed and your best buddy Billy Bob. The intent is one account per person. EVE just has a better system for enforcing it that other games.

Well the Op, for some reason, assumed one account is three accounts and decided a business who has to make money to pay for this game was being unreasonable. That also meant players like me would be subsidising them, but I'm sure that never crossed his mind as something some of us would not like.

If you really must have just 1 account, then the only real solution (while still being at risk for an outright ban for account sharing under TOS violation), is to simple establish a family rule that you can only train a skill while you're logged in, and the next person who logs in can stop your training if you didn't. All three get to train, although a horribly penalized rate... but your best bet really is to get one account, get it self sufficient, then use its isk generation to buy P****s for the other two accounts.
after the other two are established, they should be responsible for their own P****s.. or better yet, if the kids are 14 or over, they can at least get a very short term part time job flipping burgers or something to pay for their habit.

Yes, Eve is more than happy to have a family play their game. A family by definition consists of more than one person. I don't think they intend for more than one person to share an account. I'm not a lawyer, not sure what the EULA says, but I bet it says nuh uh.
If you all want to play a character and can't afford to separate accounts like you probably should to keep it legal, and you want each have to have your character training when you aren't playing, share the same character.
Now you each just need to agree on skills to train. You can all have your own ships and modules and such. There will be issues like sharing money, and lots of stuff strung all over and not knowing who's is what's, but that's not CCP's problem.
But and play the game on their terms or you don't have a complaint.
