Ok don't be too harsh on me....
The only console I've ever owned was a Wii and it never got much use at all (really kind of a little kid thing huh?)
So I'm going to take the plunge and buy a PS3 just because of Dust. I don't know anything about the product line so can an Eve player give me some advice what to buy, what not to buy?
Thanks in advance. Forum signature removed by Empress Jamyl as instructed by God Tò+püä jamyl sarum tÜçsÉÄpâ¬péñpâû |

Maybe there's more to it that I'm missing, but this seems like what you probably want:
PS3
Not sure if you're wanting to find something refurbished or cheaper, but that's the basic. |

All console models currently in production differ only in the size of the hard drive, which can be swapped with any 2.5in SATA drive without voiding the warranty. It's really only a question of finding the bundle that has the accessories you want included.
Some of the older "fat" models can play PS2 games, but they are less reliable, and it is often cheaper to buy a slim PS3 and a PS2 than pay the premium for an early-model PS3.
Since Sony's bundles differ by region, it'd help to know what region you're in so we can suggest bundled games to play/avoid.

That's the one I got. See if you can get a free game with it for the same price; they're pretty pricy for just a console and you still have to buy all the other stuff, like bluetooth headset, hdmi cable, (comes with some funny little component thing I didn't have connections for), etc..
Does have one controller standard, (also bluetooth which is nice), but it is a very basic package, and I'm just now finding the capacity to be rather limited. 160GBs gets chewed up fast when you consider you need double the game capacity to download and install. It did for Mass Effect 2 anyway, which was a 24GB req. to download and install. I noticed it then because I had already installed Assassins Creed 2 and Assassins Creed Brotherhood.
Still, I haven't hit my cap but I don't store movies or Music, or even pictures on it. The last might be a req. for Dust though.
Can't say much for the Slim models. They seem to be improved in some respects, but I'm not sure I trust them. I had a slim PS2 once because I replaced my old style one with it thinking it would be cool. It was lightweight and very small and I was rather shocked when I got it out of the box, and kinda went, "wtf; is this it??"
Nice ornament ofc, but it overheated the disks and itself because it had poor cooling or something and skipped often enought to drive me crazy. I didn't end up using it much. pretty sure the fat models can no longer play PS2 games when u update them.... just get a PS3 with 160 gb hard drive, also if you are fan of basically free stuff get PSN+ ( $5 a month) you get about 20 free games, some small indie games, some retail games that you will have access too until your PSN+ subscription ends, this happens every month so in no time you will have hundreds of games.
this month its, golden axe, sonic 1 and 2, Rock of ages, 2 old PSN castlevanias Trine 2, Awesomenaughts and a bunch more. |

I got a 160GB PS3 slim from Sainsburys last month, turned out the local grocery store had the best PS3 deal in all of UK at the time (-ú160).
Yesterday I swapped the harddrive for a 40GB SSD I had collecting dust. It made a nice improvement. Dominique Vasilkovsky Mashie Saldana Monica Foulkes |

Did you physically go inside the PS3 to do that? How did you transfers the OS across? I assume via a third party system. |

I just bought a pre-owned one for as cheap as I could. Really, if your only getting it for dust, theres no point doing any different.
Personally, I hate the controllers though, so I am getting an adapter that lets me use my 360 controller. But thats personal preference. |

You know what kinda pissed me off is I finally said "**** it I'm selling my PS3, never use the damn thing." a month before CCP announced at E3 Dust was going to be PS3 exclusive.
Was so bloody annoyed at that, kinda thankful many of the Game stores had their closing down sales right before they were bailed out; managed to get a new one for -ú120 (160GB) ... honestly the whole way the OS works, drives me nuts. |

And you'll be pissed off again when Dust bites the dust a month later due to lack of interest, or better yet, move on to PC where FPS mouse twitchers with IQs of a watermellon wipe the floor with you playing on your brand new PS3.
The smart move is to wait and see which way the wind blows, before buying an obsolete piece of plastic not worth its wrapping. |

UPDATE: I purchased the PS3 320GB w/Move and the freebie Game Champion ($350) that comes with it. One extra dual shock controller in camo color ($55), and one dedicated USB charger ($30). Total w/tax about $475.
Now I got to do the setup and sign on and get a Sony account in addition to picking a new name for Dust.

He is both wrong and right. It depends on the console really. Some were made with a software-emulator while the one you have (just like the one I have, which is also an EU launch-model) has a hardware-emulator.
The software emulation went away with an update, while the hardware-emulation didn't.

I'm new to console gaming but I've read quite a lot of forum crap before spending my money on such a rubbish thing. So, in few words: slims ftw, get the 120/160 Gb (it depends on the best offer you can find, I had a 160 for 200Gé¼ but usually that's the price for the 120Gb, at least here) and the latest build or firmware, dunno the precise term, anyway it should be coded as "CECH-3004A".
This model has a new motherboard which means also new layout for the rigs and most of all higher and more effective air flow. Many were discouraging others to buy this one since it has a cpu fan significantly smaller than the previous ones (8 cm Vs 12 cm if I remember well) but it is placed much closer to the rear where the air should get out and basically it suffer less from overheating. Noise also was supposed to be higher (they said because a smaller fan had to spin faster to disperse the heating), while in practice it's less cause the fan spins at the same speed if not lower than the previous one.
Personally I never noticed any overheating at all and noise is just as it should be I guess so..... go for the latest firmware and cheapest offer for a slim and don't buy on ebay or other sites but in case of super-certified vendors or you could +1 this thread: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=110670&find=unread ;) _________________________ just because your paranoid it doesn't mean they're not after you |

Only the first generation of PS3 had this ability, and it would be the model I would get if given the chance. Unfortunately my 1-gen PS3 broke down and I guess that model is a collectors item now pretty much.
Other than that just get a new version with a large harddrive. Theres not much difference between todays ps3 models. |

I said "..... but in case of super-certified vendors". It's not a mistery how many tech vendors sells things on ebay as it was jita local. I mean: they tell you the firmware it's xyz, but it is abc instead. How could you know? noway if you're not an electronic engineer, at least not untill you need to request an RMA and they tell you that you're not covered cause the item is too old or anything like that.
Said that, I have no personal experience about frauds on ebay, but they are very well reported. Also, if you bought from a private or some not-certified vendor (feedbacks can be tricked very easily) try to pay via paypal. This way you can block the money transfer after receiving the product if it's not corresponding to what the vendor told you.
BE AWARE: this is a sort of "extra-warranty" given by paypal, NOT BY EBAY! So, if you need to contest the vendor, go to the paypal customer service, not the ebay one! It would be long to explain why it's like that, but it's like that (and you can easily guess why)
ah, since I feel generous today, I'll let you know that 85% of USB sticks sold on ebay it's somehow fraudolent _________________________ just because your paranoid it doesn't mean they're not after you |
