This is stupid. There is ZERO, NONE, NADA a reason to have me ****ing docked learning soem ****ing skills that take ****ing 2 months to train just so I can go kill stupid **** for **** cash. I'm still doing level 2 missions because I can't survive ****.
No one told me which support skills to get up to high levels. I've got 100 skills at level 2-3 because I find having 1 skill training for 3 days is purely ******ed.
People say "steep learning curve".. no, it's easy as **** to learn this game. It's how LONG IT TAKES TO HAVE FUN that is stupid. No reason I shouldn't be like the other 3 month players in battleships kicking lvl4 mission rump.. but there is.. because I'm not some experienced player nor did I have someone holding my hand to know exactly what I should have done to enjoy this game. So basiclly, you failed to to do any research whatsoever into the game you are playing, and now blame CCP for your own ignorance?

Hi there! I started this account on July 26th; less than twenty days old as of this post. I am a true noob - no alt account. I don't have a single skill trained up to 5 yet. I have only the primary learning skills and none of the advanced learning skills yet.
I have a Thorax fitted with five Heavy Ion Cannons with medium faction ammo, mag stabilizers, point/web, and armor hardeners, and 4 medium scout drones. I also have an Exeqeror with 4 remote armor reps and all kinds of capacitor tank, along with the aforementioned drone set. In exactly 2 days from now, I'll be able to fit 5 medium armor repair bots on either of these ships. I can also fly a Myrm, although I haven't bought one yet. I have over 100 million ISK in the bank - a combination of salvaging, ratting, and trading, and never once did I get a "grant" from a friend. I'm having a blast every time I log in.
What is it that noobs less than a month old can't do again?

Confirming that I ran L1s on my first week, and L2s (in my cruiser) on my second week of playing.

The key thing here is that the learning skills and most basic of fitting pre-requisites add nothing to the game play. Learning skills are flat out the craziest thing I've seen in a game for a long time and not being able to fit anything on your ship just isn't fun. In fact this is compounded because the stuff that might fit (meta 3-4) costs more than you can afford. I don't really understand why they have lower fitting requirements rather than just increased effectiveness.
I calculated that if I started a trial account now with the card in my box set, send it money and do nothing but learn to use implants and learning skills during that toon's accelerated phase it could actually end up flying (well) a fully tech 2 equipped battleship earlier than this one would and be ahead in everything from thereon in. This can't be sensible design.
Unless, you know, flying a T2 fit BS isn't the only thing worth doing.
What if you're like me and you don't always like flying frigs. I love Battleships
Well if you want to skip the intermediate ship sizes and weapon classes then suck it up and start training.

Even with no learning skills whatsoever he should have more than 1.2M SP after 3 months.

Replace t2 BS with any 9 month + goal, it was an example of how neglecting learning in the accelerated phase can slow your long term development. The tutorial never mentions learning skills and most people just want to have a bit of fun at the start which is great, but then you find that when you set yourself a longer term goal you get stuck for a while at a plateau of only using entry kit while you get all the learning and support skills out of the way. For the record I've actually done what I just mentioned and re-allocated this toon to another career path.

Of course it is, but now it takes twice the length of time overall. The payoff for doing so is even longer. I still have no clue why this game has attributes at all. The same base learning speed for everything allows for much easier balancing and tweaking by the developers just by manipulating skill speed modifiers without having to account for extremes. I could understand having them if they did something more direct in the game but they feel like they're the product of an unfinished character design. Perhaps this is because I've only come into the game very recently and things were different in the past? I cant see how removing either learning skills or attributes totally would damage the game in any way. Implants with function are still a way to keep you scared of pod-death.

I can see why you ask about why having attribute. They don't do anything except affect skill training speeds.
All I can do is speculate; it's possible that we have attributes because it simply didn't occur to CCP that a MMORPG character could not have them.
As it is, you can think of it this way: attributes give you a choice, and CCP have tried to maximise player choices and freedom wherever is was practical to do so.
You can choose to maximise your learning skills for long term payoff (some people like doing this, eg: he OP)- or not. You can choose to specialise your stats for quick learning in a favoured area - or not.
In any case, stats and learning skills are what we have, and I doubt either of them are going anywhere. Mistake or not, they're embedded too deeply in the game to be removed. CCP have greatly reduced the impact of the learning skills on the starting game; you really do have it a lot easier than when I started.

I'm not sure its really that difficult, a quick fix would be to set all attributes to the same level and just remove them from the character display then just hide the part of the skill window that currently shows the primary/secondary attribute. Reduce implant slots to say 3, dump the current lot and replace with pure % learning speed and passive character effects sets/individuals. Change is not something to be feared, I'd wager increased new character retention would pay for it in relatively little time.
One could argue that the accelerated phase actually amplifies the impact of learning skills as you can learn (most) of them at double speed for a vastly quicker long term payoff.

I think the people who started this topic are a little too obsessed with perfect learning skills.
It doesn't take more than a few days to fly a good rifter/punisher/incursus - then add another week or so for a good PvP cruiser, and whoosah! now you can start doing your rigorous Learning-plan if you have to -------------------------------------------------------- Creative Cookie Procuring [Girl.] Are recruiting! |

You're assuming a consensus about attributes and learning skills that does not exist.

Apologies if I was unclear: the lack of consensus is the difficulty. A large part of the player base would furiously oppose your suggestion. Myself among them.

On what basis? What positive benefits does the current system hold? I'm not trying to be inflammatory, I really don't want to argue but I genuinely miss the reasoning behind the status quo.
