Just had a drunken friday with a m8 and last night we talked about music, among other things, and the topic of covers came up, namely best and worst, we agreed on Madonnas' cover of american pie as the worst (without doubt the day the music died) but we spent a good hour debating the best, some of the covers we liked...
Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus - originally Depeche mode. The Who - Saturday nights alright for fighting - originally elton john, I think? David Gray - Say hello wave goodbye - originally Soft Cell. and many more so don't assault me for my taste.
Get posting and give me something to listen to.

One song, in 3 versions, sounds exactly as good as the original. Don Henley: Boys of Summer - Original
The Ataris: Boys of Summer Cover, slightly punkier
DJ Sammy ft Loona: Boys of Summer Cover, clubby version.
IMO this song hasn't lost any of its greatness to covering. It's different in sound, but still awesome

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 11/07/2009 19:13:45 Faith No More covers Easy by the Commodores - Mike Patton is a God.
Easy live on Jay Leno, the faces Mike produces are classic.
Easy professional video.
In Flames covers Land of Confusion by Genesis and this cover is one of the few that I consider more appropriate then then original.

I actually preferred this song to the original.
Also, Valerie cover by Amy Winehouse of the Zutons song was horrible.

Personal Jesus? I thought there was something really beautiful in 'hurt' on that ep, but 'personal jesus'?

Me too. As a bonus, it was in the second best scene of American Pie 2 (the best is the Shermanator one).
I love all of Manson's covers, Personal Jesus, Tainted Love and the Eurythmics' one. Also Disturbed's Land of Confusion and Shout are great. Oh, and Metallica's Whiskey in a Jar, Am I Evil?, Blitzkrieg, Die, Die, Die My Darling, and the Queen one.

I do think that a few of the songs on the APC Album eMOTIVE are really decent covers, not all the best but every one of them different, especially When the Levee breaks and Passive (which can be considered not so much a cover), and What's going on
Edit: FINALLY. stupid ass forums wouldn't let me post cause it'd either say "Log in" or "You're going too fast!" (after a minute of waiting btw). ________________________________________________

This is a joke, right? How can you possibly love both the original and the horrible sacrilege of that cover?

Eh ... the lead in vocal isn't that bad ... but the whole rock and roll part isn't there. Of course ... I was kind of distracted by the video ... trying to figure out just what was going on. If all I'd had was the music to listen to ... it might have been worse. In any case - here's the original for comparison:
Behind Blue Eyes - The Who - Who's Next?
Of all the albums I practiced to on my drums ... this was my favorite.
