Hey everyone, i was stuck in a roid belt when i got popped co my ship coudn't align as it was to close to asteroids , so i thought the solution could be reverse thrust, i mean all the tech and we can only go forwards this aint star trekkin.

... you mean kinda like clicking on some empty piece of space behind your ship and thus freeing yourself from the obstruction?...
IMO you lost your ship 'cause you did something dumb like getting in the middle of a bunch of roids, not because we need some new game mechanic to deal with it. Take it as a lesson learned and move along.

just to add i mean low speed quick thrust modules, that also might help with dammage due to turret speed and ship direction, just to get you out of trouble and make you a little harder to hit

im not bitter about my ship , these things do happen i just thought it would be an interesting function

That's fine, but I was pointing out that you can already do what you want your ship to do by a) being smart about where you fly in the first place and b) by clicking on empty space behind you. You DO have to actually touch your mouse and/or your keyboard at some point while playing this game...

It would be nice. What would be nicer is if your ship flew around roids instead of trying to ram through them.

Does it make you feel better, talking down to people on the forums?
The point is that ships do not have a reverse gear. And given the odd shapes of both ships and collidables, it is entirely possible to get wedged in a space where your ship is unable to align and get back out. Hence the "Stuck" option in petitions.
It's not too much to ask that a ship's pilot be smart enough to maneuver out of such a confined space. Training Evasive Maneuvers should amount to something.
Also, reverse thrust would provide a quicker stop in general. Try getting an Orca up to its blistering max speed of 40m/s, and then press Stop. It takes several kilometers of coasting before coming to a halt. I've taken to pressing Ctrl Space, and then making a sandwich before I know it's good. |

i do understand what you are saying but that requires the ship to turn 180 move and turn 180 again and with an industrial that takes time, and as for "You DO have to actually touch your mouse and/or your keyboard at some point while playing this game" snidy sacrcasm isn't nessasary

Without diverting the thread too much, it'd be nice if asteroids behaved the same all the time.
Meaning, why do ships bounce off all the time... and yet missiles pass through magically?
Yes, I realize there's a great many arguments and technical difficulties against Line of Sight calculations. But it'd still be nice.
Picture the scene in Star Wars between Obi-Wan and Jango. Being able to duck through asteroids, and have missiles explode behind you. |

Yeah, that would be awesome. Unfortunately ccp has enough problems just getting 1400 people into the same system (hello 49-), so they're going to need a lot more processing power for that.

i have always wondered why our ships do not have reverse or even just retros. most other scifi ive known a ship was able to back up and had a method of rapid stopping.
what it should be is ctrl+space once starts you stopping, ctrl+hold space fires the reverse engines, if going forward it will stop you faster and if still it will make you go backwards.

thats the exact sort of thing i mean, it would also help if you warped into a roid because your speed goes up in the 000's and it takes ages to stop

Given the current warp mechanic of magically passing through solid matter, the warp effect from the new Star Trek would work too.
Just pick a celestial in front of you, and *poof* immediately into warp. |

Well, technically we already have reverse thrusters to, you know, make your ship stop. In reality, your ship would keep going the same speed until it hits something or a strong enough gravity pulls it towards something big. Seeing as how this does not happen and our ships stop after going several times light speed in warp and slows down after you order it to or turn off a speed mod, there must be some sort of reverse thrusters (and side thrusters to turn).
That being said, learn to fly, n00b.

In sci-fi any ships that are rocket powered or use some form of directional thrust, turn around and accelerate in the opposite direction to slow down, stop, or back up.
Star Trek doesn't count. They use "impulse" engines, the forward sensor array, and other forms of sci-magic to play fast and loose with science.
Not that this game is that scientifically correct, but most of the incorrect stuff makes for better gameplay. Ship's speed for example should be measured by acceleration, not by a flat speed. In space there is no resistance, so ships don't have a top speed as long as their shields hold. Instead, in EVE ships basically are bumper cars in space. Ship's movement doesn't work anything like reality. But if it did, space would be a lot emptier and doing ship's speed and movement correctly would require a lot more processing power. Bumper cars in space, is much kinder to the servers.
In this case, even though he was being rude, the other poster is correct. This is the OP's problem not game mechanics. If it takes a while to back a ship up and go around, then that should drive the lesson home harder. I lost a BC to an asteroid once, the result? I don't allow my ship anywhere near asteroids when I'm fighting. This is a matter of the pilot not doing his job, not the ship being "dumb." It's a ship, it does what it is told. If it get's stuck on an asteroid, then the problem is user error.
Quote: Given the current warp mechanic of magically passing through solid matter, the warp effect from the new Star Trek would work too.
You don't pass through solid matter. In every sci-fi work, warping puts your ship out of phase with real space. That's how astrogators earn their money by making sure the ship doesn't come out of warp inside a star or planet. The graphic of "flying trough solid objects" is just a graphical representation to show your ships relative position in real space if you were to come out of warp. In sci-fi, if you were to look outside your ships ports while in warp, you will not see any stars, just an expanse of nothing, a mass of competeting energies, or something that the mind can't comprehend--depending on who's writing.

Reverse thrust is a great idea and should continue beyond stopping at zero.
Also reverse align and warp will allow a ship to quickly back out of a threat situation without the clumsy waste of time of slowly spinning around. This is accomplished by ejecting a micro singularity reaction back out of the engine thruster tube.
The drawback would be from a maximum allowable limit to x-ray emission exposure resulting from the quick decay of the micro singularity as your ship gets catapulted in reverse. So you have to watch the x-ray exposure meter that will look like a heat sink indicator.
Also Emergency Reverse Warp skill level 5 reduces to 0% the chances of a catastrophic encounter with the singularity before complete decay occures. Level 1 would be about a 5% chance of being destroyed by the Emergency Reverse Warp.

As best I can tell, all the stuff you see about your ship turning and what not are simply bells and whistles the client shows you, not how the game actually handles it. When you need to warp, you need your velocity (remember velocity is speed and direction) to be at least 3/4 your max speed in the direction of your warp target. The ship has to lose it's speed in other directions and increase speed in the direction it wants to go. The client displays this as your ship turning. If your ship is at a dead stop, as far as I can tell it takes the exact same amount of time to enter warp pointing dead ahead as it does dead astern, because you have no forward velocity to lose. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

What hath that to do with Star Wars exactly? This generation is just twisted.

Just saying, umm. Well, that's totally wrong.
But to get back to the original idea: no. It is what it is. EVE ships go forward and have to turn. Don't get caught on asteroids. And certainly don't propose ideas that would make the actual spaceship part of this game more complicated; it's one of its main charms.
