In my 4 years in this game, I remember buying a Navy Caracal during my fifth month ingame - I'm only gratefull that I wasnt able to borrow enough isk for the Rattlesnake, due to my friends not being online...
Oh, and two years later I also bought a 300m bestower from market in a cosmos constellation - basicly someone bought out all bestowers in range and relisted them at 300m, it looks a lot like 300k if you dont care to doublecheck and sort by location....But I only noticed it a week later during my usual audit because I had about 30 times as much isk in my wallet at the time...
On the other hand, during my second week in eve I got a low grade snake omega from a faction frig in .7 space, once bought a selynnes cap recharger for 300m from contracts, and when I got curious about scamming, got 400m on my first ever try ( though I didnt continue afterward, as I make enough isk anyway), to name just a few...

So far:
Got scammed out of a few million by a courier contract (delivering a few units of trit to a 0.0 outpost - yeah, that scam).
Lost 100K at DBank.
I've only invested in a few IPO/Bonds so far, been real conservative in my bets. At my NAV level, I'm still able to use most of my liquid ISK.

A lot more than most people, but nothing I couldn't afford to lose at the time. Here are the ones I can recall:
PSI: 1.55bn
Hanoi Hana bond: 500m
Riethe: 200m
Fury bank: ~500m
DBANK: 2bn
LQI: 500m (failure rather than scam)
Starlight Horizons: 2.2bn (not written off just yet, probably not a net loss due to lots of dividends)
evn7289/CRTF: 1.3bn
LRN: 1bn
Having said that, many others have paid back handsomely - I've think I've broken even, despite all the losses. I'm now at the point where I'm putting most of my isk to work, at a level of activity that I'm comfortable with.

I have invested in about half a dozen IPOs and bonds, with no current exposure. My only loss was to Fury Bank: 1.5 billion (principal) on deposit in a regular account. I invested more in DBANK, but cashed out a while ago (perhaps even a bit prematurely, in hindsight)... so no loss to DBANK (beyond a token amount I left just to keep the account open).

At which I became a provider of investments, rather than an investment source. Safer to work my isk myself and achieve economies of scale than to continue to assume others will follow my ethical code.

Once upon a time (when I was far more naive) twenty odd million to EIB - ironically enough I'd been offered a loan for much more than that by a teller, but I declined it hours before the collapse was initiated.

Never... because with all my toons over the years:
A) I always take the time to read the fine print on Contracts, and
B) I don't invest in player banks.
If somebody wants to borrow ISK from one of my toons, I insist on collateral worth at least 30% more than the ISK borrowed. Why? Because it keeps people serious about paying back their loan. Especially if it's a highly researched BPO or a rare ship, and so forth. If the borrower disappears from the game, or defaults for any reason ("uhhhh, my Corp got booted from it's rented 0.0 space and I can't rat anymore"), I still win when I liquidate the collateral.
Sucks to be you if you default, but that should sound 110% familiar to those of you who are always trying to import "real life" financial practices into EvE's financial "world".
Lesson concluded.

First and last time i got scammed was on escrow buying a set of bookmarks, think i paid 25mil for something like 200bm's instead of the 1000 i was supposed to get.

MD has been really good to me, with just investments made from this forum. I keep a spreadsheet over everything IPO/Bond/Share I purchase and what I get in return.
I've never made a loss, according to that sheet I've returned 220.1% for a total returned of 7,674,350,922.52 ISK
Most Profitable Margins in Order - Zero. (517.8%), BSACC (239.4%), EMFI (213.6%), FIN 163.6%) ISSO (146.8%) The rest are between 100% and 110%

Back in the old days, I was trying to buy a lab slot near Yulai (pre-Jita). Paid the guy, he logged. Worth the risk, especially since my Prototype Cloaking Device production was bringing in 200m a week.

Hmmm... While I've lost maybe 250k trying to trick a double your isk scammer, however I have made over 10 mil from them too so... Less then zero?

650M lost to a 600k hulk WTB. Taught me a slightly expensive but very valuable lesson about contracts early in my career here.
Other than that, I don't trust *ANY* of you so the likelyhood of ever being investment scammed is zero.
And in summary, bigger blobs are the answer. Now what was the question? |
