The War
It started here:
Quote: 2004.08.28 23:17:00
Nice work against EV. I need your two corps to do the same thing against someone else and I need you to start by next Friday. There is no time to waste and your fee should not be a problem. Please contact me about having your and CharityÆs corps do some work for me.
Normally, I look at emails like this one and get distracted by other things. People who wish to employ a corp such as mine and the Sharks usually take a bit more time to detail what they want from us. However the name on this email carried a bit of weight for me so I opened the convo, which was fairly brief as well, and thatÆs how we ended up here:
Quote: 2004.09.02 20:01:00 Body Count Inc. declares war on The Merchant Marines
2004.09.02 20:01:00 Sharks With Frickin' Laser Beams declares war on The Merchant Marines
This contract was really interesting. We entered into what was already a fairly contested situation. The Rising Storm had been at war with THEMM for over a week and were doing quite the job at chasing their ships all over Empire. When BDCI and the Sharks entered the picture, I donÆt think anyone could have predicted the results.
Our war against THEMM turned an already chaotic situation into total anarchy. The first few nights we found orange dots everywhere, strung out from Orv to New Caldari to Nonni. We worked with The Rising Storm folks on a couple occasions to great effect as well. By the time we contacted THEMMÆs leadership about a buy-out option (which this particular contract allowed assuming we met certain goals in the first week), they seemed more than ready to get us off of their back.
The Video
This marks the first time BDCI has released a video using Adobe Premiere. After my last couple vids, Leafo and LLeBRing made me promise never to use Windows Movie Maker again, despite what I was able to do with it. I obtained a copy of Adobe Premiere 7.0 Pro and began the arduous task of learning a program I had no prior experience with and using it to at least equal my previous efforts. Normally I would have released this vid within 7-10 days of retracting the war, but time and learning this b*tch didnÆt let me.
After the epic story-like feel of the EV video, I decided to do something a little more ôbasicö for this one. Little did I know that the video footage and my music selection would make this the hardest video yet in terms of synching the music and keeping the flow running smoothly. The final product turned out better than I dared hope. It may not be to everyoneÆs tastes, nothing ever is, but I hope some of you get a few minutes of enjoyment out of it.
ThatÆs all that really matters anyway.
Acknowledgements
As this video did not leave me anywhere to do credits, I am doing it here.
Leafo û Your patience and suggestions were a gift. I am truly thankful for all the help you gave me in getting past this particular learning hurdle.
LLeBRing û Thanks for showing everyone, with your last vid, where the mountaintop is. I hope to plant my flag there one day, buddy.
Zincol û You and the other Rising Storm pilots were a pleasure to work with. The few times we ganged up the results were spectacular. Who needs a Safespot Buster? We had you!
Charity Regard û For putting together one of the finest and most deadly corps in space. Working with you guys gets better every time and we look forward to it again in the future.
The Merchant Marine's leadership - While a few of thier members provided some amusement in local, THEMM's leaders were cordial and very professional.
If I forgot you, I apologize. I need some sleep.

Thanks, Kirin. Not worried about the channel names. Anything special is passworded / invite only and anyone can feel free to hop into BDCI Public whenever they feel like it (which one of my people is trying to get moderated). This is the same reason I don't stress about hiding module loadouts. It's the pilots that make the battle, not the ship. -

Opens browser, jump in to the everlasting flame that is the E-O forums Alliance threads. Finds a [VIDEO] subject...from BDCI! OH JOY! The world isnt such a bad place after all!
Even though its "only a gankvideo" its in some strange way very very good! It could be the music and the atmo, or the nice flying or the shiny graphics. Or its simply all of the above! GREAT WORK ON YOUR 1st VID USING ADOBE! It kicks a$$ and takes no prisoners..erm..wait, thats BDCI that does that...
Anyway, as usual, a pleasure watching you work!

LOL! Thank you for the compliments, Lowa. You seem to have hit on it exactly. I knew that since the war was so short there was no way I could make something similar to what I did with EV. I decided to just take the footage I had, set it to the most jamming song I could and do my best to make the flow of combat as smooth as possible.
The music synching on this vid almost killed me. If you watch it more than once, you'll pick up on little things here and there like light missiles exploding to the beat, ships warping into attack formation to the song's vocals, etc... Lots of clipping and speeding up and slowing down of those clips to make that happen and then still had to blend it all together to form a cohesive whole.
Our next job, possibly our last before Shiva, promises to be another epic though. I'm almost dreading the attention it's liable to get us, but hopefully our target will give us some nice footage. -

All in all BDCI And sharks acted very professionally and cordially during the contract.
Two of my senior officers did indeed pay for a buyout. I however didnt know about it till after the fact BUT nevertheless I support there right to do it :) All in all was a reasonable buyout and about 1 days mining :P (Think seleene took some pity on our poor n00bs in empire)
One Correction suggestion on the video though Seleene... Your video makes it look like you conquered XZH. When In fact m0o had just conquered it and the norad forces were chasing them and the shields were already gone after a MM Pilot had just reconquered it. :) Other than that a good video.

Charity actually conducted the negotiations on our behalf. There were many reasons for the offer, but what with RONA KIA declaring on you as well the field was getting rather crowded. We decided to pull up and move on because we had other offers pending and, primarily, because we had already met our obligations.

Heh. Figured you would take issue with that. From what I understand, "someone" (I've heard m0o and RONA KIA now) had been through the area earlier and bashed the station's shields down. When we showed up, it was back in THEMM hands and the shields had already built back up to the point where we had to pound on them for several minutes before they gave in.
The video is correct in that Julien Derida of the Sharks did conquer the station on our behalf and it bore the rather unique name we bestowed upon it for quite a bit longer than we expected (don't have the exact time it was retaken in front of me). There were even a couple of your own pilots who were unable to dock and were destroyed before we decided to leave rather than have our frigates face the rather ****ed off NORAD fleet that warped back in to voice their displeasure.
All in all it was a fun opportunity that we took advantage of to do something our normal empire operations would not have allowed.
Thanks again for your decor and good luck in the future, Tal.

The Sharks had more pilots on duty for that op, thus they got to stamp their flag on the station.

Nice video. Good to see there are real merc corps out there, unfortunately this time the victims were NORAD friends.
Nightwish was a good choice, but i liked the theme after it even more. Think it was from Baldur¦s Gate, right?

Awesome vid Seleene!
I'm not much of a role player, but I simply love how you stay true to your word and calling so to speak. You are a merc, and you get the job done. You aren't involved in the political bullcrap, you never let frienship get in the way, and you are as usual, relentless till the oponent is... well... not in very good shape
The coolest part about your vids, is this. The EVE community truly has no idea whats going on or who your next contract is... until its too late!
We all of a sudden get slammed with this EVE gossip, or go to the boards and see a video like this.
Once again, awesome job both on the vid and the contract

I use premiere 6.0 for my Viceroy "slideshow" vids. It's got a fast learning curve. Just learning all the tricks can take time. Also for some post production editing and spice "AfterEffects" rules. I should use it more...
One question. In the soundtrack, was that "Nightwish" I was hearing?

Edited by: Cabadrin on 28/09/2004 01:20:52 It was inevitable that some of our pilots would crash and burn in this war. We were out-gunned and out-numbered, with the majority of our pilots in empire being industrial, scientific, agent runners, or new players. I look at it as a learning experience for the corporation, and while we made mistakes, I hope we can learn from them. I do think 1 billion isk is a little high but I could be wrong. I am happy to see only 8 battleship losses, though
Ok, one point to put to rest here: When I sent out that message and when I lost my Megathron, I was a little inebriated I knew the odds when I warped in to the camp, but I couldn't seem to stop myself ... -----------------------------------------------

umm I find this statement just a wee bit offensive :) as for cinematic things - it's better to use interesting ambient music and composed tracks, not some popular or not so popular song. because someone will either love the song or hate it. it kinda splits the audience in two and with movies - that's bad. i know i would love to hear jimi hendrix - fire or rage against the machine in these action videos, but umm, there is going to be a very large percentage that would disagree and call it crap - asking for U2, Westlife or whatever :)
that's umm a tip to Seleene :P a pure philosophical one.

It's kinda funny when the first things people say after a fight has nothing to do with, "Everyone okay?" or something. It's always, "FRAPS?! You guys got that, right?? w00t, that was some hot ****!"
Originally by: olyyy I enjoyed this video I think however I already heard the music in a video from The Corporation, but afaik those were not posted outside Xetic boards But maybe have you got your carebear alt in Xetic ?
No, Olyyy, no alts in XETIC. Oh, and you still owe me a Rifter from several months ago when Miso told me, "Olyyy is a friendly." and then you came out of cloak and ganked my ass with a pair of Cruise Missiles.
I was about 70% done with the vid when Waagaa asked me to take a look at the TC videos, but I dare say I did a little more work with the song than they did. Still, those vids should get linked somewhere. There's some nice battle footage in there.
Now, here's one I've been waiting on...

Take note of the text I put in bold. We hear this all the time and I have no idea why people continue to feel the need to post this type of thing. We don't discriminate about who we hit. If it's orange, we destroy it, simple as that. Miners, agent runners, PvPers, Santa's sleigh... it's all fair game. A simple check of the BDCI and FRICK kill lists will reflect that there were more than a few of your PvPers present and attempting to put up a fight, Cabadrin.
As for the damage estimate, I went on the conservative side and held back from posting exact numbers. We use a fairly simple methodology for determining damage inflicted (that has been published elsewhere on these forums). We do not include insurance in these estimates as there is no way to know if the target was insured, his exact module layout, etc... Hence, feel free to form your own opinion, but our records and that of out client will remain the same.
Originally by: Cabadrin Ok, one point to put to rest here: When I sent out that message and when I lost my Megathron, I was a little inebriated I knew the odds when I warped in to the camp, but I couldn't seem to stop myself ...
Cabadrin, you should not drink and drive! Bad things happen!! When your named popped up on one of our location agents and we saw that you were just a couple systems away from out temp HQà well, TS was rather lively.
Originally by: DigitalCommunist I usually hate the AC/DC crap you put in your videos, but this music was very good :)
I made DC happy this time!!!
It's going to happen at some point, though. I've been dying to use "Money Talks", "TNT" or "Back in Black". Maybe when I do my big "Life of a Merc" vid I'll use it for some of the transitions between movies and story, etcà
Originally by: FZappa great work!.

YES! Oh, I do so love answering this question!
Did you notice the quote by Patton about teamwork? That's what BDCI and Sharks are all about. We get paid to destroy the enemy. We are always on the clock and don't have time to worry about things like if something was "fair" or any of the other words that are not normally associated with war. I will always warp in with five to one odds if possible because that means we're getting a kill. It means we're doing our job for our client. It means we're probably not going to lose any ships, which means we're making maximum profit from the contract. <... |

Wow... lots to reply to...
Originally by: Gunstar Zero nice vid - very good quality & nice camera work. The calm, collected presence of mind needed to obtain this footage in battle, suggests that you're very dangerous indeed.
Originally by: Cabadrin It was inevitable that some of our pilots would crash and burn in this war.

It means we're probably not going to lose any ships, which means we're making maximum profit from the contract. <... |

Will we do a fair fight? Will we fight outnumbered? Absolutely. We will and have on more than one occasion, but when given a choice, I will "gank" for wo weeks solid. What you or others call ganking, I call efficiency. What some call cowardice, I call "smart tactics". Just check out Viceroy's quote in my siggy below. It pretty much says it all.
ahh , but you missunderstand me miss . i am all up for ganking , it is how you put it "efficient"
however , as someone else said once .. "a ganking is NEVER enough for a movie" . plainly speaking , it gets a bit boring to watch gank-movies. after the initial OH ,and AHH and WOW it all boils down to "oh another poor bastard got ganked and lost his ship .. yawn"
i liked the EV movie for its background story , TS recordings and the story progression . this movie is somewhat "slim" on content . -------------------------

No, I understood you perfectly, well. I just wanted to use the opportunity to lay out our philosophy on the subject.
As for the vid, yes I can see how you might feel this one is a bit slim. However, not every war lends itself to be an epic. EV is one of the oldest corps in EVE, they fought back a lot more and the war itself lasted longer. There were also the political elements from the NCA in play, etc... Was just much easier to construct a story around all of those events than the six nights we went after TheMM.
I'm glad you liked the EV vids. They are closer to what I'd like all of my vids to be like, which is why I went ahead with a story intro sequence in this vid as well. You haven't seen the last of the TS-usage, I promise. Our next contract is likely to generate quite a bit of footage and TS recordings.
As for story, I have already started plans on something rather monumental that will probably be out right after Shiva hits.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, though. Posts like yours are a big help in knowing what people like and don't like. -

Who knows, you could be my next victim.

Originally by: Simili Hehe, I'm a pvp n00b, can't be more new to PVP than me even now, and I decided to buy a megathron fitted it with stuff for war and 15 minutes later it got crapped out before I got to my destination :P You can see it going b00m in the vid too, hehe, 1 inty transformed itself into a couple too much ships for me to handle :P Great vid btw
Simili, you fell victim to Zincol's uber safe-spot finding tactics.
Still, the impressive thing about getting your ship (well, not for you maybe) was that Zincol managed to stay alive and hold you down for close to a minute in his Crow while our fleet got untangled near the gate and warped to him. He even stayed for the rest of the fight with not much more than a few dots of structure left from what I understand.

Well most people I have fought either smack talk in local so much its pathetic or are down right just rude (Rona-Kia is the only exception, they are just annoying to fight). Then I act like a jerk to them on forums or in game. You guys fought hard and kept the war smack free which was a breath of fresh air. Ok, so anyone notice all the combat images, I mean all of them where 8-15 ships vs 1-2 ships? Most of them were vs 1 ship. Call me crazy, but it is a bit extreme to call that effective teamwork. Seriously, 10 people killing 1 person does not in the slightest require teamwork. Refer to the mOo and PA vids for real combat footage.

Hmmm.... Have you ever fought in Empire for an extended period of time?
Shia, I submit to you that the level of coordination required to direct multiple flight groups from three different areas in order to find, chase down, scramble and kill a safe-spotted BS is no less difficult than possibly giving a cat a warm bath.
My point is that when you get a target, you do everything possible to ensure he dies, and dies FAST so that you can move on to the next target. It's not like 0.0 where you can shoot at everything. Finding orange squares takes a level of dilligence and patience that many PvPers lack.
You have a point that the actual KILL may not require skill, but getting that kill from all the little boxes flying around in Empire? Well, that's another matter entirely. Furthermore, even in 0.0 fleet battles, the standard tactic is to focus fire on one target at a time. How is what we do any different? We just have to be a bit more careful who we pull the trigger on because an 'accident' can cost us a CONCORD ganked ship.
Glad you liked the video. Sorry you didn't like the content so much. -

Shia Tia, when you're fighting in empire, only a fool lets himself fight 'fair.' Part of my job was to ensure that as many poeple as possible survived the wars, and to organize an effective counter if I could. BDCI and FRICK were extremely smart and didn't venture too often into NORAD space, where they would have had a much harder time; instead they were persistent and got our pilots when they could. Kudos to them for killing us as many times as they did. -----------------------------------------------

Only one small request, and of course you don't have to cater to my request, but I believe it will help to support your case. Include in your next video those instances of combat other than N vs 1 engagements.
I mean nodisrespect to your abilities as mercenaries. You do excell at your goals, you disrupt empire operations, and throw corporations off track. As you say you are efficient mercenaries. Why? Why, should you ever put yourself in a scenario where you have a high risk/profit ratio? Refering back to your last contract, in the video you had people talking smack about the opposing force. That smack was with regards to them chosing to fight you. Why should they have chosen to play on your terms, if you will only play on your own terms?
This is an inherent problem with Eve. It is proliferated in the northern and southern fronts. There is no way to clear a system of hostile forces. Those who are willing to wait hours in end, in a safespot, or logged off waiting on number of pilots in-space to increase will score a higher kill ratio, than those who try to square off. You could make the analogy of perhaps guerilla warfare vs. the marching through an open field with bayonets fixed. It even goes further, those who are bold and brave and choose to be the ones warping into a huge fleet engagement are those who are at the greatest disadvantage. Warping into a huge fleet you will most certainly be lagged to no ends. Refering to the PA/Moo the force who warped into the huge fleet was in one big wad, that was not a wise choice, never ever warp into combat range of the opposing force. Warp withing range to approach, and then approach the opposing force. Where does this idea of warp to the other gang come into play? The purpose of scouts and cloakers is to position your fleet. Why are they not used? I digress, moral of the story, the intelligent patient foe is the one who is most likely to achieve victory. Your mercenary forces are the intelligent patient foe.

Originally by: Shia Tia My point is, in each video, there is either never or rarely a second target. Perhaps this is due to a distinct lack of teamwork by the opposing forces.
Pretty much. We are usually on the move and, more often than not, an enemy is already into armor by the time he realizes how large the threat is. As I've stated many times, and you surely understand, we're not in this for glory or honor or any other romantic concept people often attach to war; we're in it to win.
However, have no doubt that should an enemy chose to go toe to toe with us in a small fleet engagement that we will be more than happy to dance with them. Both BDCI & Shark pilots are veterans drawn from several different areas of EVE. We are more than capable of doing more than hitting F1-F8 and chuckling evilly.
Originally by: Shia Tia Only one small request, and of course you don't have to cater to my request, but I believe it will help to support your case. Include in your next video those instances of combat other than N vs 1 engagements.
Shia, I would gladly do so if I had the footage to support your request. Alas, the only enemy whom we have been contracted against thus far who had this ability and used it to any decent effect was Everlasting Vendetta and their war allies Divine Retribution. There were several multi-ship engagements, the best of which was when we jumped into, and defeated, a larger gate camp of EV/DVRN. I had four people, including myself, filming yet the footage was so chaotic that I could have only used bits and pieces. The fact that every single one of the enemy jammed and shot at my Raven (I got out with 30% armor) didn't help me much either. I don't understand why they can't just leave the cameraman alone...
Originally by: Shia Tia Refering back to your last contract, in the video you had people talking smack about the opposing force. That smack was with regards to them chosing to fight you. Why should they have chosen to play on your terms, if you will only play on your own terms?
There is a fine line between serious smack talk and joking around with the enemy. We do very little of the former, but quite a bit of the later at times. It's actually quite interesting (and a bit strange) the level of humor maintained by some of the people we shoot at. Is there a particular instance you are referring to?

We do all of this, and more.

Quite so. Many BDCI and Shark pilots are people who got disgruntled with 0.0 blob wars and wanted to do something fast-paced and fun. What we do can indeed be boring as hell sometimes, but the thrill of the hunt through what is considered the "civilized" part of EVE is what makes it so attractive. It's always fun to see someone in local in Amarr or New Caldari say, "There's people shooting each other at the gate!! Is there a war going on here?!" -

Wow. Are you hiring? I may be a bit noobish (only about 3.5M skill points to my name), but this looks like the best fun since early Shadowbane!

I will also add in that some of us play solo alot of the time, and indeed a lot of my kills are solo ones. However for various reasons (the usual one being laziness but my fps also comes into consideration) I dont run FRAPS at all. Therefore solo kills dont get frapsed for the general public.
As to the fact that there is never second targets thats cos we like to move around alot and pick off the weak members and the stragglers-its more demoralising for the enemy.

Mmmm I musta been sleeping.. didn't realize this was out till now.
The war was short.. Too short IMO.. but with TRS/BDCI/FRICK/R-K all at war with us... it made Empire alittle touchy :)
That probably shows in the vids.. There wasn't as much material as with the EV war. Still Seleene your a good movie maker. You put it together well.. but i was disapointed in it for the simple reason is that it was too short. We didn't get to give you guys any real fights.. we gave you some fun.. and i have great respect for you guys. I think if it wasn't for the other wars this video would have been much better.. And this has made THEMM a much better corp. When BDCI/FRICK withdrew there declarations.. -TRS- basicly seemed to disband.. we were left with R-K (and shortly after RONA). due to you guys doing what you did.. it helped us gain more Focus. smack around our Carebares.. and we started to push forward with R-K.. but alas.. due to some sillyness... PA and NORAD are all peacelike.. and well.. I'm bored..
Good fights though.. if not long lasting.. much Respect.. Zipp.

Excellent vid Seleene. And very nice music. Still not as good a leafo but you're gaining on him.
I do hope you keep the exaggeration a bit more down. You seem to have that tendancy and its affecting your credability IMHO. But fair is fair you sure know how to gank them pilots. ___________________________ Favorite bumpersticker of the month: My head hurts! |

I think Sel and Leafo make different kind of vids and each of them are tops in thier respective fields.

Sure, Sel tries to make things dramatic, but what "exaggeration"? I've been around for both wars and trust me when I say that Sel has been a hell of a lot more fair or even handed than I would have been in the directors chair. ----- "Hold still. This will only sting for a moment..."

Hey, having been through the EV and THEMM war, I'd have to say that the videos are pretty well realistic. Besides, if you want the best MERCs in the game and really want to make someone you dislike suffer. You hire Sharks and BDCI. Best case, you just get shut down in Empire, worst case we blow a lot battleships and shut you down in Empire. ....................................... Nightwish - Once
As noted by a previous poster, Tarja's voice always stands out and this is not the last vid of mine that will have Nightwish in it. The music is so epic and hard that it just lends itself too well to 'space opera'. -
